are we being embarrassed into not taking our change?

I used to have a huge 3l Smirnoff bottle for all my change, it held about £120 of coppers. Unfortunately it broke under its own weight :( Now just use a big coffee jar.

Can't say I've ever had anyone not try and give me change, no matter how small.
 
I usually get my change. I have some big glass spherical bowel thing, maybe it was a plant pot, I'm not sure.

A few years ago I'd used to just use notes and sometimes pound coins that I had accumulated to pay for stuff. When my wallet got too full, I'd empty it all into my pot.

The last time I counted it was about 2-3 years ago and I believe I had £50+ in there although half of that was £1 and £2 coins.

Recently, I've been stealing from it when I can't be bothered to go to a cash machine. I also use all my pound coins now so any I take out won't be getting replaced.
 
i like to get my change back. its just the principle however small.

it will either go in a charity box or in a jiffy bag with the rest of my coppers that i raid when im skint to go towards petrol lol (thank god for them change machines in supermarkets)

i have a few shops that are tight wads and keep the change

think about it if they steal a penny of off 100 customers a day they have 365 quid a year (obviously the shops that do it are the little asian corner shops that are open 365)
 
Personally I just let shops keep the change if it's less than 50p, I don't have a coin compartment on my wallet so I don't really want to be carrying a load of 5p, 2p or 1p coins everywhere.

Seemed like a decent enough bloke that had balls of steel he got robbed more than a few times at gunpoint and never just gave in which ended up with him being pistol whiped on more than one occasion.

I was actually stood outside once when some ginger guy came flying out of the shop with a gun in his hand and the shop owner even had the balls to chase him to the end of the road lol

I work in a shop, and I've noticed this from customers recently, but I assure you the embarrasment of waiting for small change is created entirely by the customer.

We don't care if you want your change or not, it's not like we get to keep it for ourselves (although this may differ if you're in a tiny shop run by a couple of people).

Anyway, don't let some weird sense of embarrasment keep you from your hard-earned money, and as an aside, dont give in to "tip" culture, we don't need it in a country that has minimum wage.
 
I was in McDonalds last week and queued up at the express lane. The guy on his till was saying to everyone "We have no 1p coins, is that ok?" And everyone was just agreeing so McDonalds was effectively taking an extra 1p off everyone.

I bought a single burger (89p) and he gave me 10p with his excuse of not having any 1p coins, this annoyed me so I gave him a 1p coin and glared at him until I got a 2p coin back. It took a while, I think the maths blew his mind but I ALWAYS want all my change back!
 
I’ve always been given change. I wouldn’t want to be in a shopkeeper’s shoes if they didn’t want to give me my 1p change.

i don't think it's about whether or not you will be given it, i am always given it, but i feel there is sometimes an air that 'oh it's only a penny, why hang around for that'

yes i agree it would have started with customers not wanting it or being slightly embarrassed but maybe it has become prolific that some shops expect you will walk away.

agree also on the tip culture. for excellent service, but hate this, 'you must tip no matter what' attitude. that's maybe for another thread, are people expecting tip now as a right almost

Anything under 5p I rarely bother with. I hate 5ps and 1ps, I can stomach 2ps but only because they're a little bigger. Especially in independent establishments, I probably should get a bottle of some sort top put all my change in and once I've seen it mount up I might start getting it.
 
I've had one of those electronic change jars for a few years too, often empty it at £10 though as I see all that change and want to bank it in :D

The jar cost a fiver fiver so it kind of paid for itself after a few months. I only put coppers and maybe 5p coins in there though.

Shops dont care if the tills r over at the end of a shift just get put into banking, its when the tills are under when questions r asked.
