Are you 18-24 and unemployed?

Accountancy, but my specific involvement is on the IT / Finance side.. So running the team that deal with all the project management / implementation and the support / custom development of various finance packages

Interesting, I happen to be doing an IT degree.

Just talked to JCP, apparently I can only sign on to claim credits to national insurance (aka the state pension I'll probably never get)...

Just a question I thought of earlier. These experienced people that are "overqualified" for the jobs they are now employed, don't you think long term it's a bad idea as once the job market opens up again these very people will jump ship and get their old (equivilent) jobs back and far more money than you will be paying them? In essence in the short term you will be fine, but the longer term your training of them on your systems could have gone to a graduate who is much less likely to jump ship in 3-6 months?

We always see stats but is anybody on here in the category, plenty of young people on here.

I'm in the age group - finished college in June, have had a job lined up since then (2 actually, one of which I declined). Starting full time work on 21st Sept doing exactly what I wanted. I was also signed up for the apprenticeship at college (3 days a week working, 2 days education) which I would have done if I had nothing else.

A lot of the people on my course within that age range had no idea what they were going to do after college - they were undecided whether they wanted to go to University, work full time or do an apprenticeship. The majority of them never took the time or trouble to find a job and work out what's best for them.

Full time education and part time work.

I hate these people who say "I don't have time to work because I'm learning" when they clearly do, oh 20 hours a week at college my hearts breaking, try the 20 hour college week with a 20 hour working week on average, sometimes doing nightshifts and going straight to college and back to work after college and then cry me a river.
It's laziness is what it is, parents shouldn't give them money, EMA should be given to those who actually need it, I know people who get it, but their parents are driving brand new cars, how does that work?

Potentially.. but that's a risk with anyone you employee.. i.e. they gain skills and experience and then move on.. after all this is how most people progress a career.. I don't think we will see a significant improvement in the job market for at least the next 12 - 18 months and therefore I would expect less staff turnover because of this.

I think in fairness we are perhaps working at the moment to a bit of a false economy in regards to the people / skills we are employing vs. cost of employment.. and I expect this will have to be adjusted over the coming 18 - 24 months. However I feel that this can be achieved through internal promotion thus keeping the time / training we have invested in these individuals within the organisation whilst in the short term gaining extra skills / experience at cut down prices.

Unemployed at the moment. Arent allowed JSA because the woman on the phone asked the question "have you completed 6 months of NI payments since 2006". I hadnt a clue, she said have you been working for 6 months, i said no I was in education, and she then says "well im going to have to delete your claim then"! Was annoyed so asked her to clarify what she meant and she said had i worked 6 months overall throughout that time period and i said yes because ive worked 6 months since 2006. She said "I dont beleive you have worked 6 months because you just said you hadnt".. *****

Phone again and ask to claim income-based JSA.

Well, I cant be assed with it because they are pathetic and useless. Job centre dont help you find work, they just give you a number to get on the dole. And the woman was quite rude saying "look sir if you leave the phone agian im gonna hang up", seeing as I didnt have a cordless phone and needed to get the information from the other room she was making it extremely difficult. + I gave her a tad of abuse at the end of the convo so dont think itll go well next time. Dont even wnna go on it because it depresses me, if im not on it I will just look harder for a job. Passed an interview today anyways so hopefully it goes well in the 2nd one!

Well I personally don't claim just for the hell of it, I need to eat, buy clothes, keep the roof over my head... if you don't need the welfare for that, and don't want to use Jobcentre Plus services, then by all means look for work outside the system.

Edit: Maybe if the DWP hires me I can make the service more pleasant for the likes of you :p

Thats fair enough, im not saying you are. They are a useless service though and dont help anyone get back into work at all. Those people on the phones always sound like some old moody bints.

Well I'm afraid thats how the current government decided to structure it. Everything to do with claims processing\queries is centred around the Glasgow office, with callcentres typically located in Wales and Scotland.

They are hiring more staff for the London area though...

But how are you going to internally promote, unless you expect to loose a large proportion of your upper management, or expand quite fast, which is unlikely at the moment for most companies?:)

Well there's no point in me applying for it either then, as far as they know through that period I have't worked, i've been at Uni...

As I said above, income-based JSA. You'll need to answer a lot more financial questions (NB: savings above £6,000 reduce your entitlement).

I am 18-24, however I have a full time job and have done since I finished uni 2 years ago...

On the other hand my hand my flatmate finished uni in June '08 and hasn't had any paid work since. He's had a couple of unpaid internships but seems to think he can break into the music industry (god knows why he'd want to, it's the most underpaid competitive industry and the managers know it - and hence use people). Of course he hasn't had any success (no experience and unrelated degree) and seems to think he can do a job which requires 2+ years experience. This seems to be common of a lot of grads these days thinking they can just walk into their dream job... grr.
