I struggle getting up early in the mornings, I go to bed early, set my alarm for 6.45am and still manage to over sleep till 8am...I seem to manage to yank myself up, get showered, quickly dressed and leave for work at 8.20am (missing breakfast) all in the space of 20 mins.

Idealy, i would like to get up, have a coffee, eat some breakfast, read todays news, have a shower, get dressed and and then head off to work missing all the school traffic.

How can I train myself to get up early and 'when I want' so I can have a better start to my day?

Leave your curtains open a bit - exposure to sunlight releases hormones that 'wake your body up'.

Get a radio alarm clock, put it fairly loud and set it to Radio 4 - it will set our brain working, even if you aren't actively listening to the words.

I'm usually okay with it as long as I'm sleeping okay and in a good routine of going to bed early. It rarely stays that way though, and I'm consequently quite a grumpy sod in the mornings.

I've found the best thing is just to get up instead of hitting snooze and jump in the shower, have a brew. At least then you're up.

I had this problem. I realised and admitted I was lazy. I started to cycle more often. Walk rather than take the bus and I started to eat more fruit and veg. I also gave myself incentives if I woke up on time. If I did wake up on time, I could play the playstation before I go to work! It's a silly prize, but it worked!

I then got lazy again. I stopped doing the 5 fruit and veg, stopped motivating myself. Due to personal reasons and a lot on my plate but I'll restart it in soon.

Personal reasons stopped you eating fruit and veg? Just kidding, hope you get back on track soon :) - inner happiness = out happiness, and all that malarky (sp?)

-Set your alarm clock and place it as far from your bed as possible, so you have to get up and out of bed to turn it off.
-When you get out of bed to turn it off, open the curtains + go to the bathroom n splash ya face with cold water.

I often find a hot/stuffy room makes me sleep longer.

I find what you need to wake up is something to wake up for! I always plan what I am to be doing the next morning and stick to it- then I have no problems.

If I don't have much on I always oversleep :(

When I get up it takes me a further 30-60 mins to wake up fully and even after 10-12 hours sleep I'm still tired, once I went to bed at 9PM woke up at 11AM, was still tired, but on college mornings I set my alarm for 6AM yet I always seem to wake up at like 6AM every morning, I dont even need the alarm anymore its like I've got an internal one lol, but I lay in bed untill half 6 trying to keep awake then jump into bath and 30 mins later dressed and downstairs falling asleep in the chair :\.

A good bucket of cold water is a good alarm clock though, never fails!

I'm fine to be fair, tend to wake up around 6 get up about 6:15. getting up earlier isn't really a problem either though i do set an alarm for it just in case.

:D

Anyway, first thing for me every morning (after feeding my yowling minions) is to get in the shower. After that, I'm always fairly awake and ready to go. If I don't have a shower, I'm a zombie for at least half an hour. I also make sure I go to bed at around the same time every night (midnight for me) - so I get a good seven hours sleep - even on weekends (unless I'm drinking, in which case it's either a 10pm or a 2am finish :D).

I like to get up have a shower, grab breakfast and arrive at work half an hour early to read the paper, I have to half 30 mins sat down before I start a shift, otherwise my workrate stinks, don't know why

Its not the most economical way of waking up but leave your window open a little overnight and as already said, leave a slit in the curtains to let some light in.

A nice fresh smell in the morning with having the window open always gets me up no matter how much sleep I have had.

I also found that thinner curtains in the bedroom so the light shines through more helps.
