Are you afraid to play certain games?

I know your on about scary games. But I am scared of buying Football Manager. I had this game years ago and it sucked a huge section of my life, now that I'm married with kids I dare not buy this game.

When I was younger (back in the days of the Saturn) I couldn't play Alien Trilogy.. my Dad had to play it for me lol

I love scary games, but no way in hell can I play them alone!

For some reason, I have a deep seeded fear of being chased.. even if it's not a particularly scary game (e.g. Tomb Raider) - if there's a section where you end up getting chased.. I either have to turn the sound off, or wait until I have a friend over with me, so I can play it through lol

I have a friend that will NOT play or watch anything even remotely scary under any circumstances. We meet up and game a fair bit, so one time I'm going to sneak a DeadSpace session in right under his nose. ;) I can't wait for the reaction. :p

I don't get scared hugely when playing games, but when I'm on my own I'm ultra susceptible to things that make me jump. That being said, playing through F.E.A.R. on my own going on 3am, with closed headphones on was pretty terrifying. I'd have to try pretty hard to make myself do the same with DeadSpace. :p

I have that same feeling for certain games. Maybe because its the video game version of a bad nightmare, like being chased by a scary creature and your life depends on trying to run away from it, and if you make ONE screw up, you are dead :D.

This reminded me so much of Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future for the Dreamcast. I can never forget that already just on the second level in the game, the boss is a ridiculously huge Great White Shark that puts even Jaws to shame. The strategy to defeat it requires you be be bait and my god it gets your heart beating especially since it moves so fast. And then the later levels in the game also have you being chased by some ginormous creature in dark, underwater deep-sea caverns. Man this classic game really does get you thinking what may be lurking deep in the sea and the thought itself is scary.

I imagine this is to do with some underlying fear or phobia tbh. When i play a game, even if it isn't scary, i become pensive as soon as swimming in water comes into play. This is coming from a guy that's completed every scarey game under the sun but as soon as i needed to step into water in bioshock i came over in a cold sweat and had to step away from the computer for a while.

Irony is, i'm a really good swimmer, just don't like water where you can't see below the surface. Stupid phobia i know.

I love Horror games but I get too scared while playing thema s I love to play them through the morning. I bought Resident evil 5 expecting to be scared but sadly wasn't, thought the game was a breeze in terms of adrenaline levels.

I think Resident evil has lost it's edge now and the introduction of cutscenes has ruined the moment's for scary things to happen. I still need to get Dead space, looks awesome.

omg when u play the first part of dead space where u have no guns and u have to run to the lift i was ok until that thing ripped the lift open i absoloutly sh*ting myself i dropped the controller and everything my mate was on the floor pi*sing himself with laughter. what can i say im a scaredy cat but atleast i try :)

not really no...Dungeon Master on the Atari ST made me jump a few times back in 1987/88

Same here, one of the first gaming experiences that really frightened me. The sound of the mummies as they got nearer but you couldn't see them because they were around a corner:eek:

Doom 3 - partly due to the hype and expectation but the first two hours I found unbearable. So much so, I had to stop playing.

Probably many other games that have had a scary effect, Fear being a good example. What else? ..Silent Hill 2, Resident Evil 3 Nemises, Res Evil 4 - to some degree, Quake oh and Stalker. Am playing again atm with mods and jumped out of my chair earlier tonight when I went to peak round a corner and one of the army troops let off a burst and wasted me. I didn't even know he was there.

I could go on but I'd get too scared...

When i was young, i was far too scared to watch anything remotely scary filmwise, but was always fine with games. Nowadays i cant get enough of either, and personally i dont think they make things scary anymore, the last film that had me gripped and sweating was REC, good times :).

I cant play scary games full stop. The worst one Ive played (I did enjoy it though) was gears of war 1 and 2.

I also hate underwater sections of games so much so that ecco the dolphin once used to scare me !!!!

Ahhh I'd actually forgotten about underwater sections! :D

The Damn part of HL1 scared the crap out of me.. I had to empty 1/2 my ammo into the water to kill that huge fish thing, before I could get into the water lol

Strangely i was just thinking about that bit. I was playing through on hard and that damn helicopter had me proper pinned down. I sprinted to the edge of the dam so i could jump in then just suddenly froze, got killed pretty sharpish.

Utterly pathetic now i think about it.

The bit in the police interrogation room, with the 1 way looking mirror:(

I had to replaster my ceiling after scene....

haha same here, i literally did crap myself. also, the bit where you're leaving the interrogation part of the police station, after a run in with mr x (sp?) when you leave down the corridor he bashes through the wall i was like ****!!

re2 was so amazing, loads of replayability.

edit: and i remember on RE1 the panic and fear i had when that zombie came out the closet, jesus. i never played anything so awesome :D i was 11 bearing in mind.

ecco the dolphin was a wierd one... i loved the game, but at one point on the dreamcast the game glitched, and everything like the seabed, fish, sharks, coral everything disappeared, only ecco was left floating in a blue background, and i freaked out i dont know why though..must be a childhood thing.

Only time this happened with me was the spider things in Doom3 (aracnophobic) and Silent Hill 3, I just couldn't finish that game, too many times I **** myself so gave up.

I've managed to complete all the SH games, although not alone :D

Just started playing Doom III and that is quiet hair raising, it's when you see the orange eyes appear from no where and the little lanterns swaying from side to side heading towards you, made me jump a bit, had to stop playing when it got dark on Saturday and the missus had gone out. :D

How good are the Condemned games and Dead Space for jumpy moments? I really want to get some games that are scary as films don't give me this gratification any more. and is the first Silent Hill game scary? Might get that.
