Are you "attached" to your car?

I've always been attached to my cars somehow. Same with my current one. It may not be anything tremendously special, but it's fairly decent, I've worked hard for it and it's mine. I try and take care of it as best I can :) I don't think of it purely as a disposable tool. It's a tool when I'm driving to/from work for example, but I don't treat it badly because of this ;)

Thing is, I don't know. I was thinking about this the other day on the way home from the RR. I'm not sure what an M5 would give me that I don't already have. Looks wise they are pretty much the same, the interior is largely similar, all you'd get is better handling which I don't have the skill to exploit and extra performance which at my stage in life is hardly a must.

The 530i.. just fits.. but then the M5, is an M5. See what I mean? It would be a difficult decision. I would hesitiate. This, I feel, is the measure of how attached you are to a car.

The 530i is a compromise car,a nice one, but still a compromise - face it. :)

Are you really telling me that (removing additional costs) you wouldn't swap? - Frankly I don't believe you.

Costs removed its a no-brainer, surely (how many times have you raved about the e39 M5?) the M5 is everything good about the e39 made to handle / go / look even better.

Ultimately its a car, and not worth the bother of emotional attachment.

If its a nice car , all well & good, if it isn't - too bad ,but, its better than walking / a Bus pass.

Life is full of things far more important, and, far more worthwhile of such a significant part of your income, well, thats my recently formed view. :)

I love my Mondeo so much, I've let the GF borrow it for a week!;):D

I'm not in particular attached to my M5 even though I love it to bits, but my MR2 I have probably spent in excess of 5 grand making it what it is today. It's what I learned all about modding and restoration on.

I am growing more attached to my new car it needs the few niggles sorting out before I am totally attached.

I agree with the speed thing as well, my car has very similar performance figures to dolphs and you cant even use all of 3rd gear legally. If you are in 4th you hit the limiter at just over 120mph, so its not really possible to use all the power.

Wont stop me getting a mappable ecu though.

No at all, I still like the car but really want to change it asap. Sometimes when I park it outside I secretly hope it gets stolen lol
I hate selling cars, just cant be bothered.

Getting more and more attatched to my mondeo which is prob pretty stupid really. Afterall it is a boring diesel rep mobile - but i still love it!!

Just sold the escort this afternoon. Not feeling as gutted about that as I thought I would.

I would be very attached to my motor as well, I look after it well, keep it clean and drive it well. Pretty much the same with anything I put a lot of money into & spend a lot of time researching beforehand. And I'd say it's almost perfect for me, a 3 series is too small and 7 series possibly too big but I've never driven one to really know for sure. And I would change nothing with the spec; but if I had two things extra to choose, it would be to have a CD player that recognised MP3 CD's, and to have a 535D - it's supposed to be a fair bit better than the 530D acceleration-wise. Not that I'm complaining though :)

I know a few people who drive new Merc ML's or Range Rovers or other expensive motors, and have wheels scraped and completely black with brake dust, back seats filled with mud and rubbish, and dirty dashboards etc, I just can't understand how you can throw so much money at something and not give 2 fecks about it

Most people here probably are, I was thinking of a reason today to go out in the Impreza and I just thought of going to get a Pizza (live just outside the delivery range) and to stop it going cold on the way home I might have to drive a bit... more lively than normal, thats a shame eh.

Actually, I dread the day my car becomes a tool for getting to B from A :\

It's going to happen, but not any time soon hopefully.

I know, me too. Thats why i've vowed never to have a boring car like my parents (both volvo automatic drivers!).

The day i pick a more practical car rather than the one my heart is set on, is the day i've gone to the point of no return.

Exactly what I like about it.

No, I am saying I would hesitate. Becuase lets face it, a 'money no object' situation is something few of us here will ever experience, but the ability to purchase an E39 M5 is something most of us will have, and I hope to have when its new car time. However, cost to purchase is just the first part of the story. Even when you can afford to run it, which with few other outgoings is perhaps possible, you must ask if the considerable extra expense is worth the extra benefit.

Ultimately, I'd probably get the M5. But the point is, I'd hesitate about it and not be able to instantly make up my mind, as I really rather like my current car. IMHO, this is a sign of attachment. Which was my point.

Your views tend to change when you get older. I'm pretty sure the sort of things which now make you happy would have bored you to death when you were in your early 20's :)
