Are you DirectStorage ready?

I've now uninstalled the Samsung nvme driver, Samsung Magician shows the Microsoft driver being used, and in Device Manager the Storage Controllers area shows the MS NVM Express driver being used too, the driver version however shows it's from 2006 - Can you guys who also have the MS driver check this please?

Performance seems to be up to spec though either way...

I have the same drivers and a couple of Samsun NVME, benchmarks seem in the right ballpark and never had any issues.

No. Forspoken missed boat to be the first DirectStorage-enabled game.

Scorn confirmed will be the first DirectStorage-enabled game.

Scorn will release on both PC and Xbox Series X/S next month on 21 October 2022.
Scratched 21 October 2022 release date! :o

14 October 2022! :D

Cant wait to test first DirectStorage game in 2 weeks time.

Can't wait to find out if my ssd sucks or not lol, it's good timing since I'm doing a new build soon

My Crucial P5 seems ready...?

I installed the insider thing, says none of my drive are NVME except my P5 Plus definitely is an NVME drive, says DS is ready though with no driver blocks.

Haven't read too much into this but does the game actually make use of what direct storage can do e.g. instant loading times or no loading at all? Lots of unique assets i.e. not copy and paste of textures/objects throughout the game world and so on. If so, then will defo be giving it a try, especially to see what happens with vram usage.

IIRC, I seen some reddit posts where people who got EA said the performance was awful, could just be an early build though.

Oh bad news from Scorn game developer!

DirectStorage is only supported on Xbox Series X/S so PC version will not have DirectStorage support.

Guess we have to wait and see on 3 November 2022 if AMD will announce upcoming games use DirectStorage this christmas 2022 or Forspoken due in January 2023 will be first game to use DirectStorage on PC.

Wow Microsoft will release DirectStorage 1.1 in the next few weeks. Look like AMD, Intel and Nvidia will release drivers before or on 3 November 2022 supported DirectStorage 1.1 that will enabled GPU decompression.

o1JU3hD.png

This is probably why no games supported DirectStorage 1.0, games developers want GPU decompression in DirectStorage 1.1 to use for games in 2023.

AMD may demo upcoming DirectStorage 1.1 games with GPU decompression on 3 November 2022, Forspoken could be the real reason game delayed to January 2023 to wait for DirectStorage 1.1 support GPU decompression. Forespoken was demo loaded 1.9 sec on NVMe SSD with DirectStorage 1.0 back in March 2022, so with DirectStorage 1.1 with GPU decompression could see Forespoken loaded about 0.64 sec on NVMe SSD.

They highlight the asset load time in red, but look further down to see what's actually more important - the transfer rate on DirectStorage without GPU decompression is 2.4GB/s and CPU is smashed at 100% load and with GPU decompression on it's a full 7GB/s and CPU is chilling at 15% load.

You can see why no developers have jumped to launch with DS yet, GPU decompression is what makes DS tick.

Without GPU decompression the CPU gets smashed to try and load textures into memory and it's bottlenecking the transfer rate to just 2.4GB/s but with decompression the CPU bottleneck is completely gone and the data can transfers at the full 7GB/s of the PCIE4 SSD into memory

When Luminous Productions demonstrated Forspoken ran on DirectStorage for first time back in March 2022, they never showed CPU load and bandwidth. I think behind the scene they must be used AMD flagship Threadripper Pro 3995WX CPU for Forspoken DirectStorage performance benchmark, their massive 64 core and 128 threads bottlenecked at 100% load struggled to pushed 2.4GB/s transfer rate up to 7GB/s.

There are no CPUs that can handle DirectStorage without GPU decompression.

Forspoken original release date was 11 October and now Microsoft announced DirectStorage 1.1 on 13 October. It seemed likely DirectStorage 1.1 was delayed by a few months, I guess it was original scheduled to released around August. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang was supposed to revealed details about RTX I/O and DirectStorage 1.1 at Geforce 40 launch event on 20 September but the segment was dropped, Nvidia engineer will
reveal details about RTX I/O and DirectStorage when Microsoft will release version 1.1 with GPU decompression soon.

Game built for DirectStorage technology on PS5 comes to PC, but developer doesn't enable DirectStorage for PC version

Can you guess what happens? Stuttttttttteeeeeerrrrrrrssssss

Nothing is pre cached, the game just loads in assets and textures when they need to appear on screen resulting in an endless stream of stuttering and frame drops as the PC architecture is unable to load the data to vram fast enough

User result after compiling DS1.1. GPU used is a 3080ti, system is able to transfer 6.7GB of game texture data into VRAM in 0.45seconds. Effective bandwidth between storage drive and GPU VRAM is 14.81GB/s

The best result I had on 3080ti & Kingston KC3000, usually anywhere between 15 - 17 GB/s

Load in 0.37 sec and 18GB bandwidth! Very nice.

What CPU you using? Guess it is Intel CPU because of low CPU usage.

10.06% CPU usage? Not very good with Ryzen 7950X CPU.

Guess AMD Ryzen CPUs are terrible at DirectStorage because of high CPU usage.

it seemed old Intel CPUs like my 8700K will be very good at DirectStorage with around 2.5% CPU usage but bandwidth not great because m2 slots all running on PCI Express 3.0.

Think I will need to upgrade my CPU to 13700K hopefully on Black Friday or Cyber Monday that could see DirectStorage bandwidth around 21GB and 1% CPU usage.

Intel tested DirectStorage 1.1 with 12900K, Samsung 980 Pro 1TB and Arc 770 16GB:

IO1PNYS.jpg

9.14GB loaded in 0.42 sec with 21.67GB bandwidth and 1.29% CPU usage!

Amazing!!!

Now installed 526.47 driver and ran demo on 3 hard disks Drive C: Samsung 850 EVO 1TB SSD, Drive D: Western Digital Blue WD40E31X 4TB SSHD and Drive G: Samsung 980 Pro 2TB m2 NVMe to see how well it run with and without native DirectStorage support.

o9xYjGp.png

3.37 sec with 1.63GB bandwidth! Terrible on SATA SDD.

5Ay0ALw.png

3.26 sec with 1.69GB bandwidth. Terrible on SSHD.

HpDuo2x.png

0.50 sec with 11.07GB bandwidth. Good peformance on PCI Express 3.0 m2 NVMe.

8700K 2.56% CPU usage on all 3 hard disks is very good with DirectStorage performance.

Upgrade to 13700K should see amazing DirectStorage performance.
