Are you doing anything with Hue?

I got some LED strips for a good price but want to confirm something before attempting install. I want to put them under the kitchen cabinets to give more light, but there are two obstacles. The first is a corner, the second is an extraction hood.

Will the following work?

The idea is to use the Starter Strip (Purple), which I will cut THROUGH THE SOLDER not the cut line, then use the Litcessory Cut-End to Cut-End Snap Extension Connectors to (Red) to bend the lightstrip 90 degrees.

At the end of that strip I'll use the Litcessory ExtensionCable for Philips Hue LightStrip Plus (Green) to run around the extraction hood without wasting LEDs, and then plug that into a Hue Extension Strip (Orange)

I don't really want to use two starter kits as that uses two sockets which are a premium in my kitchen.

Any reason this won't work?

I haven't linked to the Litcessory items as I've only been here 10 years and I still don't understand the rules to linking to Amazon.

Are the innr bulbs a good, cheaper, alternative if you don't need the homekit support? Any major downside?

I've got a mixture of Philips and Innr and I can't honestly tell the difference.

They connect up the same, seen as the same thing and the light appears the same from all I can tell.

Just received my first Innr GU10 :)

The electrician is coming this week to fit our new lights, so I need to get the Hue set I've been thinking about for ages ordered!

It's for a light outside the front door, to come on at sun down and go off at a set time, say 10pm, using IFTTT to do the latter.

Will one of the basic starter kits be ideal for this? I can see two versions now, a discount one with hub and 2 round-top bulbs, or a more expensive kit with hub, 2 flat top bulbs, and a dimmer control.

Are the bulbs different on the newer kit? I guess a dimmer could be handy to lower the output as it's by the street, but can that otherwise be done via the app?

Are you planning on putting in Hue across the rest of the house or just the outside light, if the latter then it's a way too over complicated solution. Probably better off just fitting a proper outdoor light with a PIR/Timer built in.

Do you have the outdoor fitting yet?

No, it’s all going in as a fresh install.

We can’t use a regular PRI light as our Victorian terrace is near to the road, and timer wise we don’t want something on for the whole night.

This is my first application of Hue, but if may well get extended.

What I meant was the light housing/fitting will dictate what size/type Hue bulb you need to buy.

Timer on the circuit to power the setup 7am to 10pm, PIR/Dusk sensor within the fitting to turn the light on when required.

Ah yes, apologies, I misunderstood what you meant there. We have six of these going up around the property. From a quick measure, it looks like a bulb of 10cm plus the screw bit should fit. There isn’t a version of this lamp with an inbuilt dusk sensor and on the front of the house, I’d prefer to keep things as neat and minimal as possible.

Works fine, just as the B22s/E27s I've got.. It's certainly a bit dimmer than the one it's replaced but that was a brand new integrated unit (ie the fitting/bulb in one not a seperate GU10) we only had fitted a few months ago.. I'm not sure it's a fair comparison.

If I do any more I might try a Philips to compare, I'm not convinced it'll be any different.

How much heat can the lightstrips handle? I was going to use some as under-cabinet lighting but I recently found out that the cupboards next to the hob get very hot (a crayon inside the cupboard melted). I'm guessing that they can't take that much heat. I just don't want to spend $90 on a set for them to melt the first time I cook near them.

Didn't realise you were putting in multiple lights, yeah Hue would simplify things to a degree. Just grab the E27 bulbs, you just need to decide whether you want warm white, variable whites, or full colour (guessing not the latter).

Operational humidity : 5% < H < 95% (non-condensing)
Operational temperature : -20°C to 40°C

Given the age of the property, warmer shades would be preferable. I’ll check out which bulbs do which. Both the round and flat top bulbs seem to be the same height and will fit.

Oh wow.. that's good news as I want some cheap E14s...

However.. from their site..

How do I connect my IKEA smart lighting products to a Philips Hue Bridge?
If the software version of your IKEA smart lighting products is 1.2.x or later, you can connect them directly to a Philips Hue Bridge.
Simply follow these steps:

If the software version of your products is not 1.2.x or later, you need to update it by using a TRÅDFRI gateway and the TRÅDFRI app.

The bold bit at the end makes me nervous.. you get to ikea.. buy your stuff then get it home and realise you have v1.1 and have no hub to update.. if it doesn't state a software version on the packaging or if there's a mixture out there this could be a PITA.

But in principal this is great news.. if nothing else the standards are converging around a winner.
