Are you doing anything with Hue?

so these are bulbs that change colour and cost a fortune which you can hook up to sensors which cost a fortune so you can automate them to do things you would normally do like turn lights on and off.

as for tv use, coloured lighting goes against everything videophiles stand for, same goes for photographers who do weddings they request no coloured lighting as it ruins pictures. imagine having a green face for example in your weddings pics.

i could understand them for like a bar, nightclub or some sort of entertainment venue for a home though, i'd rather have white lighting and colour the home through art, furniture, photos, ornaments, etc.

seems like a very gimmicky item to me. what sealed it for me was the comments about pink and purple lighting and buying them purely to upset your partner. seems like a great gadget to have

i imagine they also consume more power due to having the ability to be turned on in an instant there will be a standby usage. not very green either then over a normal white led bulb.

Don't buy them then?

Yeah why a Ferrari when fiesta's exist:D

ferrari serves a purpose it will handle better, accelerate faster, sound better and has prestige and is a status symbol.

however i would never buy multi coloured lighting for my home, possibly for a kids room to keep them amused as they tend to like gimmicky things like that. the fact you have a thread asking what others use it for is amusing. someone trying to find ways to use it to justify their purchase ;)

lifx is a cheaper alternative that does the exact same thing with no loss in quality, however i can't see any real need to have coloured lighting in a home. yet to see one useful thing it's used for.

It's just a bit of fun. My living room is either white or very subtle 90% of the time but then bursts into disco mode if we have a party or the kids want to bop around.

Psycho Sonny, you're completely missing the point, but then I don't know why you came into the thread in the first place if that's your viewpoint.

You're assuming it's either white or fuchsia pink and there's nothing in between. Lighting is probably the most important aspect of any interior design as it has the most impact by changing the impression of size and shape of a room. Having the ability to change the white balance of the bulbs is worth it alone, from bright white to almost orange with any varying of brightness in between.

As for the colours, most work really well and completely change a space. For example:

The majority of the light produced there is from their lightstrips, which for £69 for 2m is actually pretty good value. The way of choosing colours is excellent, with scenes setting slight differences in colour, plus the ability to create a scene from a photo is brilliant.

The party modes etc are a bit of a gimmick but I'll certainly stick them on when we are actually having a party.

This thread was for anything apart from the basics that people are using them for. For example you could have them synced to your door bell, which for people with hearing difficulties (or large houses...) is particularly useful. He wasn't hoping for replies along the lines of "I use mine to turn my lights on and off".

I have mine linked to some cameras in the garden. If they sense motion in the garden at night certain lights will come on. Hopefully causing any unwelcome visitors to think that someone in the house has woken up.

I also have the hall light linked to the doorbell, not on button press but on motion detection so if I'm coming home after dark (very dark countryside village) the light in the hall will come on as I approach.

Really need to just get a pir lantern from b and q or something but there is no power there so it's going to mean running cable outside of the house which I don't like or chasing walls which I equally don't want to do.

Also my hue bulbs are playing up latley. For the last two weeks they randomly appear as "unreachable" and I loose all control. Turning them on and off again, changing channels or rebooting the hub don't help.

I have to factory reset the hub and add all of the lights, rooms and scenes again. Then it will be alright for a day or two before it happens again.

Is this happening to anyone else?

This is the v2 hub with the gu(10?) spots, normal screw bulb and light strip v2 with extension, all colour changing.

Is anyone using aftermarket bulbs like the Kudled ones? A friend of mine is in the process of redoing his house and has several hue lights all over, they're very impressive.

He was going to give me a one of the spare bridges he has (was cheaper to buy the starter kit than individual bulbs) and I'd quite like to not go bankrupt :p.

Problem is this may totally change my plan on what lights I should install in my kitchen. Looks like downlights are now off the cards :/

there's hundreds to choose from, do the same job for 1/5th of the cost

Sorry? I thought you just shot down Philips Hue like it was a chocolate teapot?

he was looking for a cheaper alternative so i posted one.

still not my cup of tea. i can see a use for it in say a kitchen and dining room to jazz it up with the gu10 type spotlights, same goes for kids bedroom, however i would never use them in any room with a tv or projector, has to be white lighting due to them effecting PQ.

i'm currently waiting for google nest to support wireless trv's then i may get that installed then try lifx with google nest in 1 room. however wireless trv's is essential before i opt for a smart thermometer. i don't want to invest in honeywell as i think nest will win due to being google and being a bigger household name, just need nest t pull their finger out and catch up, i'm amazed that it doesn't have official wireless trv's.

I use a couple of LIFX bulbs, I was sick of coming home in the dark and either fumbling for the lock or blinding myself. Now, thanks to the wonders of geolocation, this no longer happens.

As someone said above, the ability to change white tone is superb. Cool whites for waking up and dim yellow for that 'warm study' look at night.

Bought a Philips 4k TV that has Ambilight, interested in expanding on it to encompass the whole wall (low level), are the HUE ledstrip kits the way to go? anyone got experience of doing the same?

I've just bought the starter pack. We're a bit limited as to where we can put them as almost all of our light fittings use the tiny 'candelabra' bulbs. You can buy converters but I'm not sure if there's enough space inside the actual fitting.

Can you buy the larger bulbs to fit in recessed lighting (BR30, I think) in just white? I need 5 for in the kitchen and I don't really fancy spending $300 on color ones.

That's pretty neat. How did you get the power to them? Do you have an outlet hidden away? I don't have any outlets other than on the countertop and I don't really want wires hanging around.

Sorry to bump this thread but as part of a house renovation i'm probably going to do this is a big way

I'm trying to cut costs because some of the prices are...crazy. I'd need £1300 on bulbs alone to do just one floor so I'm thinking of maybe doing this for a few rooms but not
all.

Are Osram bulbs the only ones that work instead of Philips?

- 26 x GU10 sockets
- 1 Hue hub
- 3 x Hue lightstrip plus (kitchen cabinets, under and above)
- 5 x wifi dimmable switches (but i'm going to leave the normal switches with blanking plates because you never know)
