Are you doing anything with Hue?

I've just bought the starter pack. We're a bit limited as to where we can put them as almost all of our light fittings use the tiny 'candelabra' bulbs. You can buy converters but I'm not sure if there's enough space inside the actual fitting.

Can you buy the larger bulbs to fit in recessed lighting (BR30, I think) in just white? I need 5 for in the kitchen and I don't really fancy spending $300 on color ones.

Osram lightify do a bulb that works for those fittings and works with hue

Sorry to bump this thread but as part of a house renovation i'm probably going to do this is a big way

I'm trying to cut costs because some of the prices are...crazy. I'd need £1300 on bulbs alone to do just one floor so I'm thinking of maybe doing this for a few rooms but not
all.

Are Osram bulbs the only ones that work instead of Philips?

- 26 x GU10 sockets
- 1 Hue hub
- 3 x Hue lightstrip plus (kitchen cabinets, under and above)
- 5 x wifi dimmable switches (but i'm going to leave the normal switches with blanking plates because you never know)

You can link the lightstrips together using some Cat5 cable if you don't mind a bit of DIY. You should be able to reduce the amount of lightstrips you use that way.

Just a comment on Osram Lightify - they are cheaper but not as good.

I bought 6 when they were in a deal somewhere - they all blew within a year. I have yet (touch wood) to have a hue bulb fail in 3 years. Also, the colour range and temperature isn't as good as Hue, and they don't support moods etc with Hue although I expect they work better on a Lightify network.

I've got mine setup with Samsung Smartthings. At night our ensuite light comes on when the door opens and is a dim blue colour so not to disturb the sleeping partner.

I have some set up for ambience behind the sofa in the TV room.

Not HUE but part of my system. My outside lights come on at dusk and go off at sunrise. Certain lights around the house also come on at dusk. I can turn them all off at night and set the motion sensors to turn on certain lights if tripped etc.

The possibilities are almost endless.

Was very keen on the hue system when it first came out but really need to implement it better

Currently have it working with alexa so that part is useful for turning on the daughters bedroom light off as she constantly forgets to turn it off!

Plan to add in smart things with motion sensors for the hallway and landing but honestly i feel kinda "lazy" doing that when its so easy to hit the switch only good one i wont feel so guilty about is the bathroom as we all know its hard work waking up at 3am for a pee to be blinded by the lights and miss the landing zone or dribble over your feet :D

Cant justify the cost of the GU10 bulbs for kitchen and bedroom at £50 a pop just seems way overpriced so i think if i do go the smart things route i will put in a smart switch with a motion sensor for the en suite and closet.

Been looking into them but 1) they are VERY expensive and 2) they don't seem very bright compared to normal LED bulbs meaning you need more of them leading back to issue 1...

No problems with brightness we designed our living room purposely with no ceiling light and rely on lamps and the brightness at 100% is very bright with the hue bulbs

If you power off a Hue bulb by the regular wall switch, does it default to white and full brightness when you switch it back on with the switch, or does it default to off, or the last used colour/brightness?

Defaults to white and full brightness. Would be handy if they were capable of reverting to the previous setting but all the colour info etc is stored in the hub, not the bulb.

Is there a decent option out there yet to replace traditional light switches with Hue compatible ones? Ideally I'd like to replace wall switches with something that incorporates a standard switch and a dimmer control but I can't see anything.

App control is great, but when you're not dimming etc it would be nice to just be able to switch things on and off easily.

You can get the Phillips hue wireless dimmer switch. I've got these in some rooms so it's easier for the wife/visitors to use. Not a direct replacement for the standard wall switches but you could get a blanking plate i guess, and just stick the Philips dimmer next to it.

Works for us, and this way if we move I can just take all the Hue stuff with us.

I've got the tap and the dimmer in one room, which work really well together. Just don't use the wall switches. Bit clunky that they're there i guess

Picked up a couple of dimmers. Having two switches for the lights is a little clunky but the dimmer switch works well and the ability to reprogram it with iConnecthue massively improves functionality.

IFTT functionality seems to have stopped working as my lights no longer turn on at sunset wonder whats happened there i did get a notification about IFTT going down but didn't read it.

I had to manually do it via the hue app ergghh
