Ark: Survival Evolved - Dinosaur MMO/Survival PVP funz!

hi all,

Need some assistance quickly from the people playing this,

I have knocked up a cheap upgrade to a friends PC including a G1840 and 8GB RAM. Had a 512mb 9600GT I had kicking about that I threw in too.

His lad played ARK at a friend house and has convinced him to buy the game on the steam sale. Does he have a chance on earth of running it, i think that they have a 1280x1024 screen

It uses the Unreal Engine 4 so recommended specs are below -

Desktop PC or Mac.
Windows 7 64-bit or Mac OS X 10.9.2 or later.
Quad-core Intel or AMD processor, 2.5 GHz or faster.
NVIDIA GeForce 470 GTX or AMD Radeon 6870 HD series card or higher.
8 GB RAM.

ARK is not particularly optimised so I would class these more as a minimum.

I'd say the GFX card you are looking to use is significantly under powered for this game.

I play on keyboard and mouse but i've been told by other tribe members after a couple of hours of using a xbox controller it's really good.

Nice! How is te game now? I tried it at launch with a few mates and we all used steam refund after about half an hour as it didnt feel ready at all even for early access

I've about 300 hours in now, I'd say I've had my moneys worth lol It's far better with friends, there's a few of us running servers. Ours is PVE but with tribe consensual PVP.

I wouldn't touch official servers personally, just about every private one is run better and doesn't expect you to take 10 hours to tame a dino.. which is simply silly.

You'll struggle a little, GPU particularly as it's one heavy duty game, it's being optimised with each patch but until it's much further along don't expect it to be pretty and maintain FPS.

I doubt that'd actually harm your enjoyment much. I play it on DX10 instead of 11 to get a few extra FPS at 1440p on a 980, I'd rather keep it at 60fps than have it look more pretty, I've found my sweet spot I guess! you just have to find yours. I know a friend who runs it on a 5760 at 1080p, no idea what it LOOKS like but he's happily playing.

A lot of people compare it to Rust, I've never played it but consider it more "Minecraft for adults" in many ways, lots to build etc. and many dinos to die horribly to. I'd suggest watching a live stream first to be honest.

I see this is on sale @ £13.79

Worth a go? How will it play on my computer spec?

Friends cajoled me into buying this.

It runs like a pile of **** even at 1680X1050 on all low settings and a GTX960,and at which point it looks like something like WoW 10 years ago.

Mate has an HD7870XT and at 1920X1080 on a mixture of low and medium settings it still well under 30FPS on average.

Even with the settings whacked up,it does not look too bad,but something like Crysis3 or W3 still looks better IMHO.

I would say at least an R9 290/390 or GTX970 for this game at 1680X1050 or 1920X1080.

I might just process a Steam refund on this and buy it next year when it is in a better state and I might hopefully have a faster card by then too.

Mate wants to a better graphics card to run this and are willing to spend upto £250 on a new card??

Will an R9 390 or GTX970 be better for the game??

I did notice that my GTX960 did seem to run it worse than a R9 280 for some strange reason!

I've found that the last few patches have improved performance a lot. The last one especially, I've been able to switch from DX10 mode to DX11 and it remains smooth at 2560x1440. I have an i5-2500k with a 295x2, although I'm fairly sure crossfire is not working so it's basically a 290x.
