Ark: Survival Evolved - Dinosaur MMO/Survival PVP funz!

Ah Ark, simultaneously my most loved and despised game. So much is great about the game but a few things (including the official servers seemingly) are really letting it down.

The game is great however the patches are insane.

As I am on a 250 SSD space is somewhat limited and the fact Aberration and all DLC's are a requirement to the base game for server assets is expected but a wee bit extreme. The Aberration was a 6GB download and a 64GB required space for the unpack and the latest 1.6GB patch is 18GB unpack required space. So it is just easier to delete and reinstall from scratch with a copy of the save game....

Anyway, Patch notes for the 99% Ragnarok completion anybody know what is actually new or complete??

Game size is insane, if you look at the files the likes male/female human models take up 1.8GB - now think about how utterly awful those looks and how many we're talking about..

Just one example but it needs sorting out

UK Friendly is a good set of servers, it's a hive with migration and a server for every map. PVE with vanilla enhancing mods, I haven't played in a long time but it was a stand out server.

what am i doing wrong? i played this with a friend the other day. we selected to host a non-dedicated server. when playing my friend couldn't walk very few away from me.

we want to be able to walk freely wherever we want from each other, but on a service just we are playing in if possible

You can only go so far from the host, you can change the distance somewhere in the settings but it still wont be that far. You would have to start a dedicated server for both of you to join.

does that cost? i tried clicking run decided server, but it seems to load up the cmd and then sit there
You can start a server from home and join that server, if it is just for you and your mate you should be able to run the server from your pc and run the game. I don't know much about it as I only tried it a couple of times.

We just rent a server now and then when a few of us feel like playing tbh. When there's 4-5 of you it's a couple of quid a month each, astonishing value really.

If you only want to play it once or twice a month tops then you're best of running the dedicated server from your PC / whoever has the best PC / best internet connection.

If that struggles, you could all join a random public server and use that?

ok i'll give setting up a dedicated server on my pc. it's brand new so i'm sure more than capable.

however my old pc, and my girls laptop both struggle to play this game in a setting that looks in any way decent. i tried ark years ago on my old pc and it wasn't half bad, figured it'd be more optimised now so perhaps even better looking but seems it's gone the other way.

anyone know how this should stand up.

8gb ram
3.5ghz intel i5-3570k
amd radeon hd 7900

that's the desktop. the laptop is similar spec, though slightly newer and was about £800 a couple years ago, the gpu is good but obviously a laptop one unfortunately.

any suggestions what we can reduce to keep the game running but looking good?

Game runs like turd regardless of system played on. Plenty of YouTube videos showing it crawling to 30fps in jungle areas even on 1080ti so your guaranteed crap performance regardless.
Depends on the map, I get solid 60 on epic on The Center, Ragnarok and Scorched Earth. The Island is another matter entirely, last I was on it I couldn't get above 20 anywhere.

Regardless of map though, medium to large sized bases absolutely nuke your FPS out of the window. If you ever get an FPS tank these days, it's best to check your surroundings, there's likely a decent sized base partially loaded somewhere in the cell.
