Arma 2 multiplayer arranging thread

Added some FAQs to the first post that should help out a little...

Why can't you see where you are on the map?
Because it is more realistic. Look at the coordinates on your GPS and its pretty easy to tell where you are give or take a few metres.
On the easy difficulty levels you can see where you are on the map though.

I'm home now and have got online and cleared out the idiots. I wont be able to play for half hour or so but I'm idle on the server so xfire me if anyone needs removing :)

Nothing has been changed, it was just a different mission. In Arma2, the missions have a lot of control over the 'settings' as such, i.e. they can define whether you have GPS, what you can and can't see on the map etc.
For those saying about all the idiots on the server and lack of admins, to be fair it was the first night that an admin wasn't available, and you can always vote your own admin - so just pick someone responsible and vote for them. I cleaned the server of morons as soon as I got home.

For those saying XYZ setting is crap and ABC setting is crap, it is just impossible to please everyone so we've tried to tune the settings to be a happy medium between insanely hard and stupidly easy.
Also somebody asked about reserve slots, unfortunately this isn't supported by Arma or Arma 2. Hopefully in the future....

This is just a suggestion as the server isnt mine and I dont want to peeve anyone off, But why not say, every Wednesday Friday and Sunday someone passwords the server for OCUK memebers only night (even label the server as well)

That way we can all get a fix of epic 30 man teamage with no nub jockeys.
This is a good point and something that was talked about, having regulars-only nights. Shadowze also had the good idea of having a training night. So I propose we combine the two...
We password the server, and the password is only given out on TS - this ensures everyone is on TS for some good teamwork. We could then assign 1-3 less experienced players with one experienced player, who could lead them into battle for the night and help out explaining things like how to use the GPS, MHQs, action menus, how to identify friendlies/enemies, what weapons to use and how to use ranging on rifles/launchers for example. Maybe also some of the more experienced pilots could help out with others flying skills etc.
Those that do not want to help or be helped can make their own squads and play as normal. We could do training for an hour or two, then normal gameplay but keeping the rest of the night as ocuk & regulars only.
Good idea/bad idea or any other suggestions?

diddnt you say that the reason why the server is not password protected is because not a lot of us play this regularly? fair point if 30-40 of us play this a lot but because there is less then 10 regulars that play it, we need random people to make up the numbers so to speak.
Yes that is the reason it isn't passworded, because some people only play every other night etc. What is being suggested is a specific night, so if everyone is given advance notice hopefully people would make the effort to join as they'd be more or less guaranteed a good game with lots of teamwork and no teamkillers ruining it.
Its just a suggestion anyway, so if not many people are interested there would be no point in doing it :p

L33 have we only got two admins (you and shadowze)? Last night showed we may need a couple more. if theres a cost implication to running the server I am sure that there are quite a few of us happy to chip in.

Ive said all I want about last night, it was naff. I would also like to add though generally, has anyone ever *not* captured a target? Its been great fun rolling up the enemy but dont they ever... well... win? As we become more proficient im hoping they put up a bit of a fight, maybe have a town that resists multiple attempts to capture it? lots of enemies trying pushes rather than 3 infantry as a counterattack? hopefully thats feasible.

As to people being bundled into certain positions, I am sure we have lots of eager people willing to fly but not getting the opportunity. A training hour / dedicated evening or two would be great to let people try other positions out.
There are just the two at the moment, its just a shame last night that nobody knew you could vote on the server to make someone a temporary admin. (#vote admin <name/id>), and vote to kick players #vote kick <name/id> - I'll update the first post with this info.
I don't think we've ever not captured a target yet, but some have taken over 3 hours before, and quite a few have been recaptured by the enemy after we've moved on. Again we can up the enemy difficulty but then other people complain again lol, never ending circle :p
I guess the only way would be to have two servers, one veteran and one recruit with full map/markers etc.

cant u leave on the gps and map markers whilst upping the difficulty level of the AI?
That is the current setting on the server, but.....
Nothing has been changed, it was just a different mission. In Arma2, the missions have a lot of control over the 'settings' as such, i.e. they can define whether you have GPS, what you can and can't see on the map etc.

i thought you can create your own missions and play them online? why not do that? create a cool mission and allow GPS and map markers on??
Indeed. Good luck, let us know when you're finished learning the arma scripting language and made your mission ;)

I think we should keep rotating missions until we know which ones work well (Longest Day from Monday and Domination from Tuesday have been best so far).
Agreed, I've added a couple of new missions on there today to try out. As we go through and play them I'll delete any crap ones :)

Good games last night :)
Hammer - evo is on the server I just don't think we've played it yet.
Can't believe how popular the server is, its been completely full since about 10:30am today, and overall is now the 40th most popular server of all arma & arma 2 servers in the world (we're moving up like 30 places a day!).

that sucks. no wonder why there is not much team work involved. if they can reward players for helping others it may encourage more teamplay.
There was tons of teamwork.
Huge squads moving through towns clearing them, covering eachother
Chopper pilots ferrying us back and forth
Hammer moving around MHQs and collecting wrecks
Gord and sarcasm taking out armour in the chopper while ground crew lazed targets
I remember on several occasions people attracting APC fire so that others could get into position to hit them with rockets
Choppers dropping ammo crates when we asked
Medics last night were awesome, I had to call on one 3 times and never waited more than a minute
etc etc

Guys I'm a long time Ventrilo user and not used to TS... is there any special/hidden settings that stop it sounding so horrendously bad? Everyone sounds like they've swallowed their microphone and when more than one person speaks at once its just a complete mess of noise!
Failing that, does anybody want to try ventrilo as I have one running.

What I mean is the general sound quality. Whispers mean you have to be in a diff channel and then can speak out to another channel??

For example.
20 people in the same room. Ventrilo sounds crystal clear and TS sounds like someone slapping an elephant penis against their microphone, but the problem gets much worse when you have say 3 people speaking at once. Ventrilo sounds like you would expect - its more difficult to make out what one particular person is saying but thats obvious, TS goes all out and just blurs everything into one big messy noise that blocks out everything.

Guys I have some good news and some bad news.
The good news is that for the past 6 days, our server is the most popular of all arma/arma2 servers in the world :D Our overall historical ranking is now 20th and continues climbing daily of course.

Now for the bad news.
My server hosting provider allows 500gb of data transfer per month per server. Usually I'd be lucky if i used 10gb of this allowance as this server was not used for much really.
The Arma 2 server is using around 28Gb PER DAY (around 200Gb/week or 840Gb in a 30 day month) which is a shocking amount, and means that the the bandwidth allowance is going to be used up by this friday and as I'm not sure of the over-usage costs it could potentially mean that the server is stopped until the allowance is reset at the beginning of the new billing month (19th).
I have mailed the datacentre hosting provider for clarification etc, but just thought I'd give you all a heads up.
ArmA 2 server is unbelievable resource hungry in terms of CPU and network bandwidth, never seen a game server like it.

Well I sent L33 a message in Steam and he didn't answer me. Who else is an admin that I can message in Steam?
Apologies jimi, I can't seem to get my xfire or steam working in-game in arma2, hence I see everyones messages when I finally quit at the end of the night :(

what if you limited the players to say 20? 25 would that make a impact on use?
It'd reduce bandwidth usage at peak times I guess, but would also make it less fun too? I dunno, I love the large scale of Arma2.
In either case, I'll wait to hear back from the hosting provider first before doing anything :)

we need to mix up the game types and test. can only do dom so much before i feel im repearting the same thing over again
The problem is that we have tested, but almost all of the MP missions have some sort of major bug that prevent them being completed or similar.
Feel free to recommend any missions you discover though and I can put them on the server :)

It should be fairly simple to modify our existing domination mission to start with extra vehicles and just include them in the respawn script. I'm currently looking at modifying it with other stuff (TK jail script etc) so will look at vechs too :)

Rig is here! Building tonight and should practise some 1player tonight and hopefully be with you lot tomorrow night :D
Good stuff, see you soon :)
Just as a warning though, if you are going to play the single player campaign it'll probably put you off, its ridiculously buggy. The editor (or some custom made SP missions) is good for some practice etc, especially when it comes to flying ;) MP is where the fun is at though so get on and join us soon!
