***ArmA 3 Thread***

its a simulation, you have to remember that. dont come into this thinking anything different or your going to be disappointed. its slow and methodical but you can have a lot of fun especially if people are communicating well.

The server browser is the same as most other games, run the refresh wait a bit then search by population. Look for the Annexe servers DO NOT play on wasteland thats a separate mod that is like survival and nothing like the core game.
On joining a server, it may download a pack of information and then will allow you to select your position. This gives you a default loadout or special skillset (like medic, spotting enemies, piloting) once selecting you will spawn in your base.

As for playing , a few basics:
* Middle mouse button is the menu button, it enables you to get in vehicles, swap guns etc. (to get in a vehicle walk up to it and the cursor will change to a seat press middle mouse button then select GET IN)
* Left mouse is fire, HOLD right mouse to zoom, tap right mouse to scope. Whilst scoped HOLD right mouse to breath in
* G is grenades, I is inventory, CTRL-G is swap grenades/smokes
* X,C, controls crouching, lieing down etc
* SHIFT is run (you have stamina - screen goes fuzzy)
* V is getting over walls etc
* M is Map it tells you where the action is , or alternaitvely get in a piloted heli and they will take you there.

thats it really. Go play on a Annexe server with peps on it (its PVE) , never get in vehicles unless they are piloted by others and just follow the crowd, at spawn you will see people hanging by the helipads - they are waiting to get picked up, you should wait too.
Always seek cover unless you like dieing, use scope to try and find enemies on hills, only push when your team is pushing, once objective complete heli will pick you up and either take you to base to get more ammo or to the next objective ... rinse and repeat.

at the moment the game is heavily infantry based, on release it will ramp up with vehicle combat aswell and thats where you see enemies with planes and helis etc and it gets a bit mental.

Thanks,

I have been going into wasteland servers so that's where I have been going wrong.

You have pointed out a few things I didn't relise so will give it another go tonight now I know a bit more. Cheers

Anyone know if the bipods on weapons are actually deployable? I'm finding the recoil a bit extreme...

Your recoil is also directly affected by your stance. If you take a knee you'll reduce recoil and if you go prone, recoil is almost non-existant. As you'd expect in real life really...

Not liking that out of energy screen you get when it flashes red, sure its realistic I guess but maybe a bit to much or a bit to quick for a game. I heard you can turn it off but I have failed to do so :)

Oh dear, this game is so badly optimised.

Eh? Runs far better than A2 and runs silky smooth with my ageing gpu.

You need to play around with the settings until you find your sweet spot.

Also, missions will give you different performance depending on the amount of AI/props/players.

Oh dear, this game is so badly optimised.

Even at full view distance of 12000 mtrs, object view distnce up to 6000 mtrs, everything Ultra, I get on SP around 45 - 65 fps. MP is always dependent on the server, but on a decent mission on a good server then I have always had above 40 fps..

For a test I even capped my FPS at 30 the other day, even at that its pretty playable. I always find a console at 30fps seems smoother then a PC at 30fps. Sure there are reasons why.

A badly optimised Alpha/Beta, wow people bashing a game that's not finished yet on technical issues is frankly mental.
Even saying that Arma 3 alpha was way better performance wise then A2 was even a year after release & the beta seems to have improved on the alpha from what I've played so far.

What hardware are you on?

I have a bad feeling it won't run very well on mine

You have comparable/better HW than me and it runs pretty well. Haven't paid much attention to FPS/VD in the editor since the beta but its very smooth. Playing on the MBS server last night i was a steady 30-35fps with 5000m VD. Everything on ultra bar the PP settings

This is with an fx8350 and a 7850

Sounds good to me, thanks :)

Arma II didn't run at ultra on most things so I won't be expecting this to, but as long as it's mostly High settings I'll be happy :)

Why do you say that? running well for me, you need to give reasons can't just say its bad then walk away. Maybe someone can help you out

Neither the CPU nor the GPU is ever fully utilised in this game.

I run it with the
Code:
-noSplash -cpuCount=8 -high -maxMem=6144
launch options on a Core i7-2600K @ 4.5 GHz and a Radeon 7970 @ 1089/1656 MHz.

The resolution is 2560x1440, so you'd think GPU should be bottlenecking, but nope, utilisation hardly ever goes above 80%.

I can't find a sweet spot in Arma 3, because the game runs almost at the same framerate in multiplayer, regardless of the graphical settings. Even worse, when you think you've got it right at an acceptable framerate (say 45-60 fps), the fps drops to low 20s when any kind of action happens on screen.

Do you see me bashing the game? I've been playing Bohemia's games since the very first OF. Optimisation was never their strong point.

7950 not overclocked @ 900/1250

I5 @ 4.4 :)

8 gig of 1800 ram..

Running of an SSD as well, maybe make a bit of a difference!

Start parameters that would matter to you that I run are -cpuCount=4 -vrammax=2700. My gpu always uses the full amount of Vram that it is allowed to when running A3.

Having a game on an SSD doesn't make a difference to performance (unless your HDD is heavily fragmented). You will more than likely experience shorter loading times, though, which is always a bonus.

I know, always has that placebo effect on me though :)

No need for your maxmem start parameter, add the max vram one and see how much you card is using. I found that before I set it to 2700, it was maxing out the vram, which did hinder it a little.

Runs better than ARMA 2 for me. Using a 3770k @ 4.6ghz, 7970 ghz edition overclocked, 8gb 2133mhz low timings ram and one of the quickest SSD's on the market :)
