***ArmA 3 Thread***

Looking to get into this soon as I need something to take me away from PUBG because i've been hating it for weeks but just can't stop :(

What's the best way to get into ArmA3? It seems a bit overwhelming from the outside!
Is Apex edition necessary?
Is there game modes where you can hop in for an hour or two for an evening?
Is there game modes with realistic military scenarios and decent squad team work?

Have you played DayZ, Operation Flashpoint, Americas Army or any previous ARMA?

Apex isn't necessary, but for the £15 you can get ARMA 3 + the majority of DLC that adds to multiplayer on the Humble Bundle, absolutely worth it in my opinion.

I personally am a big fan of EUTW servers which are a casual-tactical game-mode you can just drop into without having to worry about pre-mission briefing etc. Quite newb friendly, but you will need to get to grips with the variations of uniform colour/patterns (easier than it sounds) or be prepared to say sorry for friendly firing :p

Altis / Stratis Life - Roleplaying servers, think Grand theft auto but online and much srs business (I.e. application forms to join the police force..). Can be fun if you can find a server that isn't run by kids and have a circlejerk admin team.
King of the Hill - Two (or Three) teams must attack and hold one area. Whichever team hits the capture threshold points first, wins. Performance warning.. You'll be lucky to get more than a solid 40fps in the centre of the action on servers running this mission.
EUTW - Think Conquest from Battlefield, one team must hold all the flags to win. These servers do perform quite well compared to some others you'll most likely come across. Generally very friendly towards all player skill levels and voice comms is often used but not necessary/required.
77th JSOC / Invade and Annex, quite similar to EUTW but a tad more serious IIRC.
Wasteland - Quick action, not much focus on teamwork or objective based play. Look out for "Sa-Matra" in the title; these generally perform the best.
Battle Royale - The origins of PUBG. I've not really kept up to date with them since I stopped hosting servers for playerunknown so not sure on current popularity or if it's still getting the attention it deserves.
Epoch / Exile - Again, since I stopped hosting these servers, I've not kept up so not sure if they're still a thing or if there are any populated servers left, these are basebuilding game-types, your generic gather materials, build a base, defend it from other players, attack other players bases

Quick graphics tip, plenty of them available if you want to go in depth, but I always recommend having View/Draw Distances to no more than 1500 and 1000 respectively to ensure you get good fps.
I used to be able to get 80-100fps on i7 3820 4.4GHz and GTX 780 back in the day with a mix of Very High/Ultra settings.

Re:the humble bundle
Honestly its worth checking out some Youtube videos to see if the gameplay would suit. Its 100% not for everyone but if your able to find a good server community the game is a crazy blast, but its often full of slow waiting moments. I have had some of my best gaming moments in Arma 3 but they have come in between 20-30 minutes of basically doing nothing.

Obviously there is all the mods but I personally found them much harder to comprehend than the base game.

Personally I think as long as you could handle the infantry movement and shooting physics then there's a game-mode for everybody in ARMA 3. It's just the patience level that decides which mode you favour
If you've started with PUBG then you're halfway there as you've no doubt experienced games where you've looted at the start and not seen action til towards the end circle. If you find yourself still going in after these games then ARMA 3 will be a breeze.

Do agree with the above though, the best games are the ones that might see you 20 minutes with no action before things get interesting!

If you do get the game @Megahurtz400 and want to try out some EUTW then I'll gladly jump in with you, or anybody else here that wants to give it a try :)

i prefer Squad nowadays! that game is arma 3 but done better

Thanks for the feedback guys!

I actually like the idea of the realism and having to be patient, and love the fact that there are so many game modes on offer!

So is the Humble Bumble worth getting for $20 (Includes Apex) or shall I got for the Arma 3 Apex edition from G2A?

And will the Humble bundle version allow me to join games with you guys?

humble will be steam keys
G2A is more expensive is it not? and dodgy grey keys.

So
Humblebundle are 100% legit keys, G2A could be have fell off the CD key lorry for all the buyer knows, more commonly just bought in a region with a weaker currency though :p

Yeah, ARMA 3 is only available on Steam anyway so no matter what key you buy, it'll activate on Steam.

Purchased, going away for work till Tuesday though now!

So will be on next week!

Does ArmA have any single player or story? Is it frowned upon to not talk over voice comms? I really like the idea of ArmA but get the feeling that it's a little elite.

Arma 3 has an Editor. Since Operation Flashpoint (2001) Arma, Arma 2 etc, an Editor is incorporated into the base game. Criminally underrated. The worlds your oyster and creating your own mission is so satisfying - especially when random events happen (a soldier goes rogue) is just amazing! :D

Also, Arma online with mates is one of the best games ever (just watch Pudd'n Neil video's on YouTube).

The editor is very easy to use, its essentially a sand box, you can create basic missions in minutes. There are limits, to design complicated missions (e.g Overlord landings) - You might need to set aside an afternoon or two. :p However, plonking a few units on a map to cause chaos is enough for a good laugh. There are loads of pre-made missions/mods developed by the community.

Yes there are AI bugs, to be fair, given the scope of the game - understandable.

@pooley @Ninco!

Thanks guys! I picked the game up and currently playing through the campaign missions. I haven't tried MP yet but I'm confused, is MP vs AI or PVP? Also what are some noob friendly servers and game modes that I can jump into online?

Multiplayer could be both i.e:

KOTH - King of the Hill - is PvP (I think there's a few AI at the start of the mission)
EUTW is PvP (There are some - like 5 - AI at each capture point until they are killed - they dont respawn)
Wasteland has lots of AI missions but your main threat will be players as the AI tend to be in fixed positions where missions spawn.

EUTW is quite newb friendly but you might find yourself away from the action if you're new and not entirely sure what the crack is.
I'd probably say try Wasteland out first to get to grips with shooting and attacking mini encampments etc.

If anybody wants to play a few games, feel free to add me on Steam :)
