** Arma II - tweaking & troubleshooting thread **

this is proving to be quite irritating trying to get it to run nicely in SP and in MP...
in SP i got the performance whacked up to very high and left the advanced bits alone apart from shadow up to very high (apparently is better than high but i see no diff tbh :p ) and ive put the view distance up to the 10km.... in SP it runs schweeeetttttt.

but in MP its a different kettle of fish. load up everything is fine... no grass tho xP so press "t" to get that little option thingy up and when i put the grass to med it instantly drops about 10-15 fps and then there are also the sliders for the view distance of ground and air.... putting those up even by a few km cripples the game and it lags along at 8fps of soemthing... it does go up to 30, but then once i move it goes back down again.

also been checking the arma2.cfg file and it seems like the game like to change the render resolution to 1920x900 or soemthing like that (cant quite remember) so its out of range of my monitor which should be 1680x1050, so i think its doing a fill of liek 130% or something... could this be why its slowing right down in MP?

Wow... Looks like install and play is a thing of the past!

Thanks a lot mate, will be playing around with these for sure :)

You dont have it set to 10KM on MP do you? id lower it a lot if you have to say 2-3km you wont need to see any further than that

Any ideas as to why i'm getting this?

well ive set it to 3km now in the video settings... but in MP on the "t" options there are two sliders which i think change the view distance of sky and ground? (am i correct?) but these are default to 900 (0.9km im guessing), so when i try to up them to about 3km the performance is hit pretty bad... and if i slide it all the way uop to 10 its unplayable... even then when i slide it back down to 900 it remains uplayable for some reason.

T only works on some maps iirc, in fact I think its evo only. ive been looking for a way to increase draw distance for a while now in other maps as server settings override your own configs.

other startup params include

-winxp : Use it in Vista/W7 to enable multi-GPU support, will disable use of D3D9Ex (a special Vista only D3D9 version)

-nosplash : Skip splash screens

-world=empty : Doesn't load as much for menu, starts faster

-maxmem=2047 : Allows game engine to use more RAM (2047 is hardcoded maximum atm, anything higher falls back to 2047).

-window : Windowed mode

-noCB : Turns off multicore drawing, slow down rendering but may resolve visual glitches

-cpuCount=X : Change X to a number equal or less than numbers of available cores. (2 seems to have the best results....even on quads!)

Cheers guys! Hope to get my rig tonight and want to play this badly, just seems soo many things I will need to change!

cheers LOAM :) and yea i think it does only work in evo, ok i know how to use those lines for like every other normal game but i run arma 2 through steam.... how do i add them on? do i go hunt down the .exe in the steam folder?

More switches

-connect=
stick in IP of server you want to connect to
-port=2302
for the server connect port

mean games starts and joins straight to the server u want
example

-connect=66.66.66.66 -port=2302

thats the image that will be rendered by the graphics card and then scaled to the resolution that you have selected or "fill". i set mine to the same as resolution of my monitor, which is the same as the resolution ive set in game so its 100% fill.

so if that is the resolution of ya monitor then its fine as it is. if you put it higher i think it renders the AF/AA (one of these) better in the distances but requires more power to compute.

think that's right anywho.

Thankyou for this thread. I had trouble with the setting son my Pc (spec in sig) but the halving the memory and default settings and -winxp really helped and now I can run it on almost max. Quite a faff though, Must try harder BIS.
