Arrested for posting pictures

I have to disagree mate.
IF he is a pacifist, and he believes the poppy represents the glorification of war, should he keep his beliefs and opinions to himself?

If he believes that the Poppy represents a glorification of War rather than the opposite then he is a fool, and should simply have worn a white poppy instead.

Not completely related but people have been getting all ****y (Including Clarkson) over the Top Gear twitter team posting a message (Supposedly automated) during the 2 minutes silence. Seriously, is getting offended the Nation's newest pass time? Ill-timed maybe but for Christ's sake get over it.
The Government, apparently, say we have a right to be offended. Since it is about all the Government have given us for years and years I think folk are making the most of it.
Or, poorly worded law being used to make easy prosecutions.
Or, people think they should be offended, so they are.

i feel its as bad as spitting on someones grave..

people died for this country so it would be free but if the people they were trying to free from evil did not care and wanted evil to take over its country, im sure they wouldnt have gone to war..

this country is free, to a large extent but its a crime in my book to burn a poppy, to spit on a grave, to tell an old woman to **** off..

When you think about it the selling of poppys is one of the most depressing things to happen in the year.

That a charity stoops to "big issue" style measures to raise money to support people hurt mentally and physically on orders of our elected representatives to protect us from a similar hurt.

The best remembrance day will be the one when the charity is not needed, the country supports it's troops and the poppies are given freely.

Indeed, just because we have feedom of speech doesn't mean anyone can go around saying whatever they want without suffering consequences.

WTF? Think about what you're saying. That's exactly what it means.

"I'm all for freedom of speech, but you can't have people running around saying whatever they like"

Words don't hurt people. Being offended means nothing.

You cannot punish people for saying or thinking things that you do not agree with.

Though its very distasteful you ought to have every right to burn a Poppy or a Koran or any other small objects you own... and if you want to post a picture of you doing so on facebook then fine too.

I feel that people who do burn such things knowing how much they mean to others are complete ****s - in spite of that, I don't see why the law should stop them simply on the basis that others might be offended.

what if a lot of people are more than just upset? what then?

The problem with the internet is that is allows very malicious people to attack the very sensitive.

I do not think that freedom of speech should be unqualified, but I do not approve of laws that permit arrest from doing something merely offensive. Harassment laws should deal with circumstances whereby:

- an offensive communication is not merely offensive but also intentionally malicious;
- the insult is intended to affect the very core of that persons being;
- there are levels of repetition that can be deemed to show the intention of seriously upsetting someone or a group of persons.

Only in those circumstances should it be actionable.

Look, think about this seriously.

Do you honestly think it should be a criminal offence to upset people?

Just yes or no is fine.

Do you think it should be an offense to incite violence?

Or an offense to threaten someone?

To phone them up, email them or just yell at them that you will beat them, kill them, hurt their family, rape their wives and their children?

yes or no?

cause if you say yes then i refer you to

You cannot punish people for saying or thinking things that you do not agree with.

Words can affect people very powerfully.

The act of burning the poppy wasn't directed these people, it was merely a statement posted in a public forum. If it had been emailed around to targeted people for the sole purpose of offending them it'd probably be a different story.

I guess it's sort of akin to a religious nut shouting in the high-street that all none Christians are inherently bad people and will be going to hell. That kind of crap is offensive to me but why should I give a damn? At the end of the day i can brush it off. If however, a religious nut targeted me specifically and hurled abuse in the street then I'd be right on the phone to the police.
