It seems that a lot of Arsenal fans are now asking serious questions about whether Arsene Wenger is able to dig Arsenal out of the rut they are in (going on 9 years without a trophy).

I think it's fair to say that he has been an excellent manager for them but doesn't seem to have what it takes any longer. His transfers have seemed rushed and poor for the most part.

Do Arsenal need a new manager?

How much longer should Wenger get?

If so, who should they attempt to get as a replacement?

I don't think the likes of Jurgen Klopp would be a realistic target for them. I think Moyes could be an improvement, it seems that he's looking to leave Everton and Arsenal will give him better funds to work with.

It does seem that Arsenal won't sack him though, so he'll need to walk, and he's seemingly extremely stubborn.

i don't see how anyone could do a better job as the team isn't that great and there aren't really any better managers available.

I've said time and time again Arsenal are in a position where very few managers could go there and make it work straight away (someone like Moyes wouldn't work at all), looking around as far as the PL goes Laudrup would be the most obvious like for like replacement. As for managers managing in other leagues in Europe I dont see Arsenal being appealing enough to the likes of Klopp not when he'll no doubt be on the short list to replace Mourinho at Real.

Like it or not Arsenal fans but Wenger may actually of been the only thing stopping you being a permanent mid table side rather than keeping you in the top 4 (up till now at least)

EDIT: To answer the questions

Do Arsenal need a new manager? No

How much longer should Wenger get? Till he's given some sizeable amount of money to spend to replace the likes of RVP.

Meh until Arsenal start spending money on getting better players in, this is the start of our demise.

As much as i have been a huge Wenger supporter, its time he left...he cant seem to motivate our squad anymore...been like that for a few yrs now and if he remains i can see us only getting worse and worse. So definitely time for Wenger to go and let someone else come in and try to turn things around.

But the biggest problem with that is that one, Arsenal board wont sack or push Wenger as hes made us profitable and secondly there wont be a bottomless pit of money that will be available to spend on new better players than the crap we currently have.

Also the other big, huge problem we have at the moment is that we have far too many mediocre players in our squad that are on long contracts so until their contracts finish, theres no chance of getting shot of them ie Djourou, Santos, Rosicky and Diaby to name but a few.

But ultimately we do need a new manager, who?? i have no idea so i guess we will be stuck with a stubborn old frenchman who can no longer get the best out of the squad. But what he is good at is selling our best players and replacing them with utter utter rubbish and not only that, putting them on stupid long contracts with a decent wage ie £60k a week.

DM post incoming anytime soon so batten down the hatches:p

I don't see why it should be expected that Wenger can compete against clubs with billionaire sugar daddies. He's playing an unfair game and doing reasonably well.

A new manager isn't going to help long-term. Either Arsenal need to find someone who is willing to pump money into the club (i.e. not Stan Kroenke) or they need to hope that the financial fair play rules actually do what they're supposed to do.

Man Utd, Everton and Spurs aren't exactly bankrolled by the likes of Sheikh Mansour/Abramovich.

This is such an incredibly common thing to hear on the subject, for years, and is abjectly stupid.

Wenger isn't a good manager anymore by any measure at all, thus, there are LOADS of better managers around.

Dragging a team spending anything from 30-50% more than the people below them for the majority of the past 8 years isn't difficult, in fact its easy, not least when you have Cesc, RVP, and a few others left over from the days he used to use his brain still.

Every single game for years Wenger has made simple mistakes, he's failed to learn from a single mistake in a decade(even when we were winning things he failed to learn from simple tactical mistakes).

AS for cash available, we've got 10's of millions a year being wasted on trash players wages, stop buying trash players, stop wasting money, have buttloads of cash for spending on other players, not difficult. Arsenal have plenty of cash, however thanks to Wenger there will be a 3-4 year lag between getting rid of him, and being able to spend that money, this is why I said YEARS ago that every year he stays screws us for longer as he loads the squad with ineptitude on big contracts(for the level of player they are).

Does it not worry anyone that Utd, Chelsea and City all have players on over 200K a week, Arsenal don't have a single player on over 100k, thats 5 mil a year difference right there on a single player, yet Utd only spent 20mil more than us in wages last year?

Wenger is the reason Arsenal haven't been remotely close to a league title in the last 8 years, not the reason we scrape 4th. As Utd are showing, vs 40mil higher wage spending City, and for most seasons anything up to what 60-70mil higher spending Chelsea... yet beating them to the title. X amount gets you in the race, most of the rest is wasted, Arsenal are in the ball park of spending to be top four and should be competing for titles, reason we aren't is the trash Wenger spends on, crap team picking, crap subs, zero tactical awareness.

I mean, can anyone name multiple games, Barca, Real, Bayern, City, Chelsea, Utd have gone into a tough game with a gameplan, stick 3 guys marking one player, go ultra defence and attack for 10 mins, play a new formation, play cb's as DM's to target a player, some kind of tactical plan. I can't think of a single time Arsenal have done this, let alone effectively, basically in Wengers time with Arsenal. He's utterly tactically unaware. I think there aren't a whole lot of managers who would do worse while spending what Wenger does on wages.

We refused to offer 100k a week to get Mata... and a year or two later, are giving the same wage to desparately hang on to Cesc, noo wait, RVP, no... oh yes, god damned Walcott...................... :(

Wenger is NOT the guy who took over at Arsenal, he's a different manager to the one who managed up to 2004 or so, his tactics changed, his mentality changed, the type of player he's gone for his changed, his coaching, assistent manager, defensive coaches, have all changed and we've done nothing since.... the new way Wenger tries to win simply doesn't work, has never been successful and he shows zero sign of going back to the way things were when he won.

I still maintain to a large degree that, he came into football when big money was new and a lot of the english game was barely semi professional, he turned the team into athletes with a few stars to beat a lot of teams, not tactically, but being fitter, faster, and fantastic on the break, through our successful years we could counter attack like no other team in the world. Today, every team, even the bottom three.. of the championship, are athlete's, its all professional, everyones fast, that edge we had has completely gone and Wenger's got nothing else behind that basic idea.

Sorry one other idea, at Monaco he turned Henry, a successful striker into an unsuccessful winger, at Arsenal he made him a striker again, one player this has worked for under Wenger, EVER. Yet his master plan for every attacking player he buys is, buy striker, play on wing, thinks he'll get Henry. Its failed 20 times to the one success, which was actually undoing the mistake he made in the first place. Thats Wenger, get some athlete's, push strikers onto the wing, because it worked, ONCE for one player, ever, thats basically his entire managerial playbook for success, it hasn't worked in almost 15 years since Henry, yet its still his only plan for success..... its pathetic.

Man Utd have one the greatest managers of all time and have an incredible worldwide following. Neither Spurs nor Everton have ever finished above Arsenal in the league since Wenger took over.

Seeing how Spurs ended with Andre Villas-Boas from Chelsea, how about Roberto Di Matteo to Arsenal?

PMSL don't be silly, I'd rather cut my own throat then see RDM at Arsenal ;)

He got lucky last season with Chelsea and this season showed just how inept he was until RA pulled the trigger and sacked him.

As for the whole sugar daddy idea?? Funny thing is we have a Russian billionaire who is willing to buy the club and pump money into the squad...Usmanov is that guy but everytime he tries to buy more shares he gets blocked. Sadly at the moment Kroenke doesn't seem all that interested in winning trophies, same with the rest of the Arsenal board. As long as we are making money then that's all that matters for the Arsenal board.

I don't expect arsenal to ever challenge for trophies whilst Wenger is in charge, he's completely clueless tactic wise and even more clueless when it comes buying players.

Yes, but it looks like they might now!

I don't know if Arsenal will do better when a new manager comes in - it seems comparatively rare where after a long period with one manager the team is instantly improved by a change of managers. I'd suspect it is more likely that they will fall away for a while then slowly build back up.

However I'll be interested to see what happens as an outsider, not least to find out whether the Arsenal fans who complain about Wenger so vociferously are right to do so. For my money I'd have said he's done pretty decently keeping them vaguely competitive for so long given there hasn't been particularly large bursts of expenditure on transfers but I'm sure it'll be pointed out that their wage bill is comparatively high.

name the better managers then?

arsenal have achieved under wenger and are still getting regular cl qualification.

He's still the best manager in the league bar AF. I can see why arsenal fans are frustraighted but I think they have a very bright future ahead of them and AW is part of that future.

The trouble is no one seems is total control so no one wants to put money in. I think Arsene is loyal to Arsenal so doesn't speak out. I don't think a new manager will change that and they still have the debt to service.

Yeah he's bought badly the last few years but then who hasn't. He just has less funds to just go out and keep buying until it's right. I think he's barely keeping them in the top 4 and when he's replaced they will drop out of the top 4.

The trouble is no one seems to want to add the funds or the push and pressure required to go further than 3rd or 4th. It's as though they are content with what they have rather than invest in a new manager and players to still finish 3rd or 4th. I'm happy to see him go now, just to see if the constant whingers are right or not:p

It's who they would get that would be most interesting....

Competing against the big clubs has nothing to do with games like yesterday, which are what the club now has a reputation for. Every other team knows we gift stupid goals, we can't defend set pieces or balls over the top, out of form players are chosen over in form ones, we show no tactical nous other than to just play our way and hope it works, and all this starts from the manager downwards.

Getting 4th place lately has relied on other's failures rather than our own achievements. We're good enough to keep ourselves in the good quarter of the table, but Wenger frequently exhibits nonsensical decision making and really, could ANY other 'top' club have fluffed a cup final so spectacularly? Or gone out of cups the same way year after year? A few years ago, this was the time of year we fell out of the title race completely, when we had more debt and better players. The last few years, we've not been in it full stop and the players are getting worse - downward spiral.

Every year we've got a bit worse, and this is likely the season where the straw brakes the camel's back in terms of how far down the pecking order we fall.
