Art or waste?

He's trying to get reactions. And it's working :D

Thats stupid, you don't do art to get reactions. You do art to create something.

As someone has said killing people provokes reaction it does not make it an art, just a pointless act that angers people like most of what he is doing.

Dodgy washer more than likely, not much to buy a replacement from down the local diy stores :p lol

Or if you let this artist guy loose that leak will become a flood in no time :p

SCM

Yeah one day I will fix that tap!!! I keep looking at it every morning and saying to myself that tonight i will switch the water off and replace the washer inside. Never get around to doing it!!

In your opinion of course :) You can't deny people their experiences and enjoyment. For the record I don't actually think it's a very good piece of art but I believe I understand why he's done it.

I did post a big post taking apart your posts before realising i shouldn't. I will say this...

You know jack about leakage detection.
You know jack about the water network.
You know jack about the problems water companies face.

If you would like to know more on the matter, email in trust or msn below sig.

Edit :- Also, although people are up in arms about private water meters. It's actually better if your on and paying for water on a meter as your not going to be paying for Bobby's next door leaky tap and excessive baths and the leaks in your local area.

Being a geek here and decided to do a bit more research  The world ocean's contain 1,338,000,000 km³ of water which is 1.33800 × 10^21 litres. The Atlantic Ocean holds roughly 28% of the world's ocean's water so that's 3.7464 × 10^20 litres in it. The water lost in our country through broken pipes is 0.00000035% of that and the water used by this guy's art will be 0.000000000000266362253%! Completely useless and off-topic but staggering nonetheless!

Don't forget that none of that is drinking water, which is what he is wasting. So your stat is a "little" misleading :p

No point wasting anything for the sake of riling people up.

how do we know this guy will do anything, perhaps thats the deal with the secret locations, he doesnt even have to put on any taps, just say he will and get loads of folk complaining/talking. Its like tellling someone you have just spent a year on a fantastic painting which depicts a horific, graphic shocking and important issue and then dumping it in your attic. might as well not have done the painting and just debated the subject, more worthwhile yes or no?

btw not condoning this nuts waste of water should it take place

For the record I don't think this is "art" at all. Art needs to be displayable in some form by definition (seen, heard or otherwise experienced). This is merely a press statement. I could possibly call it a "protest" if it were not so childish.
If the tap was left running in a public place displayed as an installation then it could be considered art, but it would still be "toss". Everyone's entitled to their opinion but if anyone holds the opinion that this is good art that doesn't legitimise it, it just means that person has bad taste and a lack of education. I mean, pushing a peanut with his nose to highlight student debt? That's not art, that's a desperate cry for attention!

Art is very subjective, though.

The way I see it, if the person who has done/made/performed whatever it may be stands back and calls it "art", then art it is.

Therefore he can leave a tap running, and it is art because he said it is. That's why taps left running in houses around the country aren't art, unless the person who left it on names it so (though, if they do it now, it won't be original).

Also, I like to think that the art gets better, the more effort goes into it. That effort can be in the form of lots of long hard thinking, it could be hours in front of a canvas, it could be a painful out-spilling of emotions, it could be a battle with authorities (i.e. water board) to allow the installation in.

Oh really, you should have. Why bother making a post saying that if you're not going to even attempt to justify it? Just today I read an article in the Daily Mail about illegal immigrants...I mean the problems with our water infrastructure. It said that Thames Water have decided to cut the pressue that households get as it will reduce the amount of leaks. This has caused people in tower blocks and some older houses to have not enough pressure for a shower and are having to fit pumps.

"But figures released by industry regulator Ofwat show that despite rising leaks, Britain's biggest water firms are raking in record profits."

There's also a tidbit about a leaked near a school in Hanwell, West London that has had a leak for 6 months. Apparently there were craters in the ground caused by it yet when Thames Water finally came out to fix them, the workmen just re-covered the road and days later it broke again. Thames Water obviously know about this problem yet are failing to do the proper measures to fix it and this stinks of abysmal management.

All of which isn't relevant to what I actually said which is the water company shouldn't have been so lame as to use a big sounding figure as a way of discrediting the guy who is doing it.

The statistic about the water lost by the water companies is drinkable water and it sounded huge so I compared it to the Atlantic which is, quite frankly, colossal! :)

I don't think it's particularly pleasing art either but a simple look at the Answers.com definition puts me off entering into a lengthy debate about what art is or isn't!

Like i said if you want to know more i will be more than happy to discuss this matter with you in private emails, not on a public forum.
