Asking someone where they are from

Are you serious?

Her family are from Barbados. Barbados is a nation whose population is descended from slaves, who were taken from Africa.

Not all black people in Barbados are the descendents of slaves.
You've made a heck of an assumption.

Additionally...she's from London mate, hasn't been taken from anywhere.

The person you quoted didn't say she was, they said "(ancestors)"
No, they said she was taken from with ancestors in brackets. She is not her ancestors. She has made it clear she's from London hence the whole existence of this thread.
Additionally She doesn't know that her ancestors were taken from anywhere. As I've pointed out, not all black people are the descendents of slaves, even from the carribean/west indies.

Are you being trained in the art of dowieholing?

Clumsy old person from privilege not reading the room trying to engage in a conversation but getting it badly wrong. Add in a person who wants to use it to make a point and you have tabloid fodder. Would I have said the same thing in the same situation, no. But I think this is a storm in a thimble to which our media and social media can nicely 'do there thing'.

I almost agree, except it’s the ingrained reaction happening again, and again, and again, over a hundred years I can imagine how it becomes annoying, tiresome and probably patronising. They aren’t just lazy racists, they are museum pieces. They are bleeding you dry just like they are bleeding everyone else dry. It’s up to you to forgive them, but they really don’t care if you are black, brown or white…..you’re a slave/peasant/serf. You can be happy with that if you want but I would suggest you are probably more valuable to society overall than they are, remember that.

I don't care what anyone thinks they are or how they see themselves compared to me. It has no impact on me and hasn't stopped me doing anything I want to do. People are a reflection of their upbringing and that is my point, from both standpoints. Their view of me or those like me I care about not at all. They live their life, I lead mine.

…and at the expense of others? Stay quiet then. Why even bother with an opinion on this?

Edit: I am sure you say this as someone who’s never been on the arse end of casual racism.

I suggest you read my first post again.

I would not have said this, it was clumsy but I think it was due to the persons upbringing. I don't think it was done to belittle, I think it was done to show interest and done badly. You seek to have a different view, but your view like mine is just opinion. I have seen lots in my 55 years, I use that to form my POV and I can't walk in everyones shoes, just as you can't. We all pick our fights.

Fair enough and I do agree to a point. I think it was belittling and to not know that is the problem. You and I mean nothing in the context other than to discuss is this acceptable or excusable…I say no, regardless of age or background. It’s like the last 30 years passed then by.

I’ve not read this whole thread but the last couple of pages are pretty astonishing really.

It’s incredible the lengths that racist people will go to to pretend that something racist, isn’t racist.

I personally think that older people, who are from a different time, should be given a fair bit of leeway with this sort of thing.

But kidding yourself that it’s not racist, even if there was no particularly overtly racist intent, is just silly.

Your first two paragraphs are sound but why should older people be allowed to get away with this? What age is it ok to be racist?

Earlier today I asked a nurse where she was from. She didn't produce a race card and she didn't get upset. She told me "Vietnam, via Hong Kong" and we sat down and chatted for a bit. I didn't mention that she had the most gorgeous eyes though, I thought that might have been pushing it a bit.

I don’t think that they should be allowed to get away with it and I don’t in any way sympathise with them; it’s absolutely right to challenge them on it. They’re wrong, period.

But I also think that it’s a battle not worth fighting too hard because they’re not the real problem, they’re an extremely unfortunate product of a time that I’m happy to have left behind.

The real problem are the younger people who absolutely know better, who have grown up in a more progressive society where it’s impossible to plead ignorance of this stuff.

People who persist with this nonsense today, and those who in spite of the bleeding obvious still try to pretend that something like this is anything other than outright racism, are the real problem; not relics of a different era who struggle to connect with the modern world.

They’re still racist, but from a purely pragmatic point of view, it would be misspent effort to direct attentions too firmly on them.

Just my 2 cents.

Good summary here…

‘Those who sympathise with an older lady out of her depth in what biographer William Shawcross calls a “remorseless, cruel blame culture in which desensitised keyboard warriors lash out with impunity at others who are defenceless” will hope for compassion.’

I was born in Hong Kong. Am i Chinese?

"oh i can see i am going to have a challenge getting you to say where you're from. When did you first come here"

I mean, that's extremely belittling. I don't think SH is dumb, she knew Sistah Space was trying to be difficult, clearly she was, kinda looking for a fight. SH willing to give it to her as well it seems.

It's all so stupid though, dont understand how its front page news.
