Asking someone where they are from

It isn't though, clearly she didn't accept the multiple answers given because they didn't match her own ignorant opinion

No, because that wasn't what she was trying to ask about. You're being a bit dumb here, she was clearly trying to establish what her heritage was and that's nothing to do with not believing that this woman wasn't a British citizen or from Hackney (her accent would likely give that away)!

Case in point

Did you even read the OP, I wouldn't put too much emphasis on the exact words recalled from memory but the gist of it is that there was something about African, she was questioned several times and Lady SH was eventually satisfied at having been given the answer she was looking for; i.e. what was her background.

Your conclusion from this, that rather than this being about her heritage it was something to do with Lady SH not believing that a black person with a London accent is a British Citizen is absurd.

Lady SH was eventually satisfied at having been given the answer she was looking for
So she wasn't satisfied with the previous 4 answers given, basically saying she didn't believe the answers could be true because of the way she looked, that's racism no matter how you want to twist, whether there was ill intent to offend or not

It's simply this, but this isn't the drama that some here apparently want from this.

Don't get me wrong, I get it. Not worded well at all and I never get why, when someone misunderstands a question, the person asks the same question again without trying to make it clearer, but that's all it is...
basically saying she didn't believe the answers could be true because of the way she looked
And this is your problem, if you really believe this.

There's not really any point continuing. If what you say was correct, then yes... but many of us just don't believe this to be the case.

**EDIT** and tbf, it couldn't be a true answer to what she was really trying to find out (definitely given the effort the lady had gone to to show she was proud of her African heritage), so yes, she asked again.

Eh? No, clearly she wasn't satisfied because the answers didn't tell her what she wanted to know.

Exactly, being a bit ham fisted is not an automatic condemnation. Everyone is too quick to judge. Was she smiling when she asked, was she scowling? Both of those make a marked difference, not just what was said, but how it was said gives further context.

As an aside, I've not come across many racists who go out of their way to try and make conversation with you.

Well shes getting a lot of backlash now all over social media so guess people are not falling for her false cries of victimization :p

So you are saying she assumed that she couldn't possibly have come from the UK?

Language is language. She comes from the UK. She was born there and said as much.

Do you not think a black person can come from the UK either?

If you rock up to an official royal function in traditional dress of somewhere in Africa do you not expect to be asked 'where do you come from?' If she wasn't larping as something she clearly isn't she wouldn't have been asked.

This guy and the Sargon of Akkad douche completely and utterly get it.

I get asked where do I come from on a weekly basis. My other half laughs when say Boden... And I get asked no where do I really come from my Swedish accent sucks... Lol

I’d forgotten all about Carl of Swindon, shame on you for reminding me of his existence. The guy sat next to him might actually top him in terms of cringe though.

What twisted logic is this?

That isn't remotely funny, because it isn't at all to do with how the conversation went.

As has been said countless times, there is nothing wrong with asking someone where they are from. The issue is then asking them again with questions that imply that their original answer cannot possibly be correct.

Well, she already asked her where she was from, and got the answer.

So i don't know what Dowie thinks she was trying to find out with the subsequent questions and the way they were worded. Dowie said she wasn't satisfied with the answer of where she was actually from.

Well, she already asked her where she was from, and got the answer.

Her first 3 stupid replies were -

Lady SH: “Where are you from?”

Ms Fulani: “Sistah Space.”

SH: “No where do you come from?

Ms Fulani: “We’re based in Hackney.”

SH: “No, what part of Africa are YOU from?”

Ms Fulani: “I don’t know, they didn’t leave any records.”

This is obviously a woman who was looking for somebody to slip up and she decided to do it with an 83 year old :(

Absolutely not. Why on earth, as a British citizen, would you think someone else in your country would ask you where you were from as the first question upon meeting you.

It is far more reasonable for NF to assume she was asking her which charity she was from, and then where that charity was based/perhaps where she lives.

If I was at an event/reception like the one in question and representing a company/charity and someone asked me where I was from, I would immediately assume they meant what company I was from.
