ASRock 775Dual-VSTA for Conroe (Core2) with both AGP/PCI-E and DDR1/DDR2 support

Gotta admit these boards are so limiting for overclocking, but for an upgrade path from AGP/DDR to PCI-E/DD2 they are fantastic :D

I went from p4 prescott 3.0Ghz w/ 512MB single channel pc3200 and an x1950 pro...was getting 4000-4200 in 3dmark05...after the upgrade its just about 10,000 so yeah, best £100 I ever spent

Nice :)

I suppose I will download and run 05 and 06 and check the scores before i do the upgrade on - i hope - friday night. Knowing me, i will be unlucky and I will be at work and won't be able to pick it up till monday lol.

EDIT: The first transport is away!! :D

Still can't find any info on 4coredual + 2900xt though :(

with ddr1 you should get to 300Mhz FSB X 9x multiplier = 2700Mhz...i've read a few places that say with ddr2 ram, you can't really get over 290FSB though...all in all though it'll be just about or right at a 50% overclock, so you can't complain :)

That would be nice to get 2700Mhz from this chip thats for sure :) Not the best but I couldn't justify getting a better motherboard or chip just yet. the e4400 would have been nicer with 10x multi and got 3000Mhz, but that was £20 more lol.

I wonder why precisely this chipset sucks at overclocking?

Anyway.. I won't be complaining at a 50% overclock, funny how nowadays it seems if your not getting at least double from a budget chip, people start whinging lol.

I got my Athlon XP from 1.8 to 2250 stably and I thought it was pretty good. Oh how times have changed.

My order has been despatched, so I'm looking forward to having a play. I didn't get the Freezer 7 Pro just yet as I am trying to limit costs, and 2.7Mhz isn't exactly pushing it. Can't wait to post some results however :)

chip came today ( e4300 )

fsb straight too 300 , booted fine , ran prime all morning and everythings spot on :)

simply amazing for the price of this board and cpu

Ahhh... still at work (Java Software Developer with nothing to do lol)... and i'm counting the hours till I get home to get my new board/cpu. My only minor dilema, is that I have to drive 19 miles to home... then hope my neighbours have taken it. Otherwise its the drive of 19 miles back into the city to pick it up, and 19 miles back home again :( Thats a lot of fuel!

Anyway.. When I get it, I will just try 300 straight off and see if it works.. no harm in trying :D

OK.. it went very badly.

For whatever reason it seems to keep corrupting my HDD! across 3 different partitions :( COmpletely lost all my personal stuff that was on the E drive now. May have to try and use fast file recovery or something like that. I did a back up a few months ago somewhere so maybe not so bad lol.

Started out great.. booted at 290mhz with 2700Mhz. Was running 3dmark06, got a little way through it then stopped. Then it would keep crashing, then not get into xp at all, even on no overclock :(

Had to completely reinstall xp, and then got problems with that. I have finally after 2 hours managed to get sp2 onto it, without it not being able to find files etc. Only thing i changed was to return the bios to the defauts settings and quickly install the drivers for the graphics card. Hasn't crashed yet, but still got a corrupt partition now :(

EDIT: Seems stable at the moment.. haven't rebooted in a while and downloaded a fair bit of stuff. XP updates and anti virus etc. Will attempt an overclock in a little bit.. talking to my wife on msn at the moment (UK - USA).

I'm guessing you have sata drives? You must set overclock mode to async or the pci-e bus will get o/c too far and corrupt your sata drives as they use pci-e bus too. Max safe pci-e o/c is 109, dont go any higher.

Nope... EIDE drive !!!! not in raid mode either.. i only have 1. I also had made sure i selected async so even more strange :(

VERY odd why it was corrupting the disks?

Which temp/volts program are you guys using for monitoring with this board please? Also I only see 1 core in task manager.. is that right?

Matthew

I know this is OT, but where in the states is your wife? Is she American or just on business?

/me is a proud American livin gin the UK

Yes she's American an lives in Pennsylvania (Boothwyn, about 20-30 mins below Philly). Had our dream wedding in her home town, and came back here for a blessing, but she's had to go back to get a visa to live her with me. It sucks, at least a month without my new wife :(

Accidently left my computer on all night, and no crashes. Seems very stable now, will dowload and try orthos etc. Not sure what the heck happened, never seen anything like that before, maybe conflicting drivers after I put the new board and chip in. I have to paintball umpire at 11:00, so not much time until later.

Currently running at 290*9 on DDR. Just need a temp monitor and how do I confirm that XP is seeing both cores?

Matthew

I have got one of these boards but the its the new 4core-vsta.

As you know this board has both an agp slot and a pci express slot. Can both be used at the same time? I would use the agp for the vga and the pci express lot for a raid card.

Yeah, in the manual, it says you can use the AGP/PCIE for video cards and run 2 monitors.

Again, this is OT: That sucks scouger. I had the same problem. My wife and I had bought my ticket to move over here before we got married. Since we weren't married, I couldn't get my settlement VISA, and we were flying out 2 days after we were married, so there was no chance of applying for a VISA in the post, and there was no chance we could fly from Dallas, to LA back to Dallas to London. Basically, I came over here on a tourist VISA, and a few months later, we flew to Los Angelas for a mini-holiday and we went to the British Consulate.
I don't understand how people from Nigeria and places like that can come over on the cheap, but for me, it was $500 for the settlement visa, which was good for 2 years, but I couldn't get residency until that visa expired. I just got my residency in december, and it cost another £385. Total disgrace if you ask me.

Anyhow, good luck with that. By the way, did you know that since you were married in the states you can emigrate over there no problem? Why would you want to stay here in the UK? Computer parts are way cheaper in the states :)

Visas are now $1050 dollars and you have to apply within 28 days else you lose the money. We already paid 1 amount, so another $1050 plus the flights to get there again :( Suffice to say my wife is very upset and stressed at the moment :( I can't move over there just yet as I don't have a job to go to. I would do it asap if I did :) Java work, hardware tech, or working on Jap cars, or paintball umpire lol. Computer stuff seems to work out 'roughly' the same price over here it seems.

Right.. gonna try and find orthos online now and give some games ago and see how the board responds. Need to get some heat on the go. Haven't had a single crash so far since reinstalling, so perhaps conflicts in the drivers or something.

Matthew

it should be showing two cores when you press ctrl alt delete and click the performance tab

i had problmes with this board recognizing my d805 as dual core cpu at first , sorry but i cant remember how i fixed it either :( , probably at the start of this thread :p

Yup saw the "Show graph per CPU" and it shows 2. The little graph on the left I was expecting it to split and show more than just the average % usage of each core.

Anyway, it's working. It appears to be loving 290FSB but on current settings (pretty much default) it won't POST properly, and freezes at the black bios screen.

My wife and i were **** poor when we got married, hence we had to charge that little "holiday" to LA on a credit card...just actually paid that card off two weeks ago..it was expensive, but it had to be done. If you get a UK credit card you can take advantage of the exchange rate and get your VISA for 1/2 price :)

good luck man...
have you tried 300Mhz FSB?
