Assetto Corsa

Bloody autocorrect - I meant physics, obviously!

I think it's better.

It just feels right.

It's very difficult to describe, because when you drive a real car you don't get much feedback through the steering wheel. Most of what you feel is through the seat. But the way AC does the FFB compared to other sims, it almost makes you forget that FFB you get is coming from the wheel.

But I think that iRacing will always be the daddy when it comes to racing online.

And pCARS is the prettiest.

The dream game is AC physics and FFB, iRacing's online system and pCARS for visuals.

I haven't played rFactor 2.

Thanks for the reply, it certainly sounds interesting then. The main issues with 'sims' is the lack of sensation, weight-transfer is critical when driving and a game just can't replicate that... unless you spend 20k on a hydraulic seat!

pCARS is indeed great looking but it feels like muck.

With a G27 the FFB is -- IMO anyway -- the best of any sim. I really do feel in control, right up to the edge of grip, in a way no other project manages to portray.

Some folk seem to think that's a sign of inaccuracy and represents a hidden aid of some kind. But frankly I don't care what it is, because the driving is incredibly satisfying. That's all that matters to me... fun not frustration, and iRacing has always seemed a little too heavily weighted towards frustration for an "average Joe" like me, even though it's skating that dangerous edge of frustration which marks out a sim from a game.

I'm sure iRacing could be proven to have a more accurate depiction of real world physics if you sat down with a calculator and compendium of tyre physics, because Dave Kaemmer is something of a perfectionist. But there's more to making a great sim than pure accuracy, and somehow you have to overcome the lack of physical forces which communicate so much in real life.

Previously I felt rF2 had the edge in this area, but now Assetto Corsa seems to have taken things to a whole new level. And while we all have to make our own mind up when it comes to the somewhat subtle cocktail which makes a sim satisfying or frustrating, for most of us I think AC may be in danger of living up to its considerable expectations... which is quite a feat!

Of course it may well turn out that there's no AI yet because Kunos can't code their way out of a wet paper bag, and online will be a complete mess because folk want some kind of lag-free iRacing system (which they definitely won't get, and which will remain iRacing's raison d'être). But even if that's true, I believe there's still enough in AC in its current state to more than justify the reduced price of entry.

No doubt it will eventually be even cheaper in a Steam sale, but tomorrow's a big place and today I'm having a lot of fun simply lapping on my own, or against my own ghostly shadow. I'm also amazed at some of the in-sim apps being coded by the community already. It proves how much potential the engine has (for both good and bad, inevitably) and how frustrated I've been, for so long, that iRacing has been so 'locked down' and inflexible.

That is iRacing's biggest weakness and biggest strength, but I was more than ready for a change, because I've always been more comfortable hiding my embarrassingly poor lap times offline... though I am about to add a mod which allows me to compare my lap times to others with the same mod, live.

I may be about to get very depressed indeed. But it's a glorious kind of depression. :-)

Well I'm fortunate enough to have raced an Elise and owned an Exige, so I took that out on the 'default' track and setup.

After 20 minutes I was lapping around 1:26, not sure if that's great but it felt ok.

I've had to play around with my GT3 RS wheel because initially it was like a 900kg go-kart, really snappy, comedy steering wrestling etc.

It seems about right at 600' of lock, at 900 it felt dead.

Obviously I have a lot of setup tweaking to do but just wanted to jump in and get a feel. It seems a lot closer to iRacing than pCars, thankfully. Perhaps a little more forgiving on the brakes than iR, but general car balance is nice however I still have that issues of invoking an initial understeer where in the real car, trail breaking to apex plus balance throttle would expect to see some oversteer.

I think sims/games bug me in that respect, with no feeling of weight transfer it's tricky to balance the car with finesse for me, I'm too used to the real thing which I finder easier than a computer game... !

That said, my own quibbles aside, it looks, sounds and feels pretty solid. I can see it being great fun online, so online as it doesn't turn in to a wreck fest that is.

I have my AC linked to this site with its App thing......and now i see just how bad my laptimes are :(

Don't worry, you're not alone. I'm miles off being competitive but this app is just giving me more incentive to practice.

I must say that for me, it seems to be a really great way to release this sim. No AI or on-line means that all I can do is concentrate on improving my driving without any distractions. That can only be of benefit to me :)
