Assetto Corsa

its a stonkingly good racing simulation mate. Handling is so damn good, I just hope the full game when released has enough content to keep it strong. Project Cars is another to look forward to later in the year https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uw-XbK2IzS0, but I've heard the handling and physics is not a patch on Assetto Corsa yet but the content is going to be insanely comprehensive. The grpahics look pretty awesome as well, tracks look better in Project Cars so it looks like both games will have very big strengths in different departments.

If it crops up in the Steam Easter sale for £20 then it's definitely worth buying. However it is far from finished as it's lacking career mode, decent AI and multiplayer. I'm not a fan of these early access games but if the price is right and there is adequate content then I'm easily swayed :p

Whilst the AI isn't yet amazing. It's still better and more interesting than any other racing game I can think of off of the top of my head.
The GTL/GTR/Race07/GTREvo Series games used to be fun against AI but I don't recall the AI ever really making mistakes or interesting passes. Gran Turismo has always been bloody awful. Forza4 could be interesting at times but again never really tried to overtake unless it was in a much quicker car.

Can anyone think of any race games that did genuinely have good AI?

rFactor2 AI is really good, will overtake and even block, although sometimes prone to smash into your behind. Grid's AI was very competitive, but it was running on it own physics and could catch up 20 seconds on one WR pace lap, good fun though. GT5 and GT6 AI is just abysmal, will wait for you endlessly, you can overtake everybody several times over in one race- made racing as much fun as driving past moving chicanes. Forza is similar, lets off the gas to let you overtake on the straights.

I'd say rF2 and AC have the best AI currently, Grid has "fun" AI with rubberbanding, not played codemasters F1 games though. There is also GameStockCar2013 by a small indie developer, I heard that their AI is a benchmark of how it should be done (not played it myself as it looks a bit dated and has "wrong" cars and tracks)

The more I get to play this the more I'm enjoying it.

I'm still struggling with the 458 though. Does it really hate trail braking because if I try trail braking it just understeers into the nearest hedge.

Nice to read KS are working on this. Not only will it help with countering and drifting but with having some feel of grip at low speeds.

In many of the cars I've driven in AC they all have a very strong countersteering force when sliding/drifting, this is not only felt at the wheel but also seen in the clipping bar of the pedal app.

If I set the gain correctly so it's not clipping in the corners it still shows clipping during drifts when the wheel countersteers, this makes the wheel very heavy and overly difficult to correct the car and the countersteering force lacks variation. When driving normally it's not really a problem but once you start sliding and going over the grip threshold it makes it difficult to feel what the car is doing, as the wheel countersteers hard at the same power whether I'm at a 5 degree or 20 degree drift angle.

This can be improved by reducing gain until the countersteering force no longer clips, but at this lower gain level the cornering forces and feel around the centre of the wheel is reduced which negatively affects the overall feel of the car during normal driving, direction change and under braking.

Is it possible this countersteering force could show more variation and be better balanced and less strong compared to the cornering forces, because currently it gives a stronger response and forces than during cornering. I wonder how realistic is it that the countersteer force produces stronger forces from the sim and at the wheel than high load cornering?

......the initial FFB is very low, simply because our FFB inputs to the steering wheel are lower than the minimum value of force the steering wheel can give. (does that make sense?)

We need to put an amplifier or something that makes our minimum input forces to always be "above" the minimum steering wheel forces, so that you always feel something. This way, you will be able to use less gain, that will protect you from clipping during extreme situations of countersteering, but you will still feel all the lower forces while driving normally.

We're working on it, but can't give you an ETA about it, sorry.

Sounds good , majnu!

To prevent understeer, try "scandinavian flick" into the turn (to turn right, turn the car left a bit and then commit to right turn). Not so much as to start sliding, but just to transfer weight to outside tires. Then control oversteer with throttle and steering wheel. Its what I do anyway :)

:)

Brill, I'll give that a go. I'm coming from mainly driving the skippy on iRacing so I'm used to being able to transfer the weight without thinking too much about it. Once the wife goes away next week I'll give it a good go.

Nissan agreement made :)

Kunos Simulazioni is pleased to announce a new Licensing Agreement for Assetto Corsa with the NISSAN Brand!
In a recent poll we asked to gamers which car Brands they would like to get in Assetto Corsa: a special place in the collective imaginary is occupied by Nissan, also thanks to NISMO®, the
official in-house racing arm of Nissan. The vehicles it creates have one goal in mind: that every time you see a NISMO® badge, you’ll know it’s something extraordinary. The flagship of GTR. That's why we are so proud to announce the addition of the Nissan GT-R Nismo 2014 and Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3 for Assetto Corsa: the Nissan GT-R Nismo 2014 will be included in future as upgrade of the game, while the Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3 will perfectly match the Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit, scheduled to be completed and released for Assetto Corsa on September 2014.
We are pretty confident that this new agreement with NISSAN will satisfy both the street car enthusiasts, and the simracing drivers who, with this addition, will get an amazing line-up for
their GTR races in Assetto Corsa!

The GT3 lineup is going to be tasty :D

Had a quick go with the keyboard seems pretty decent - though the key config doesn't seem to work - C to change camera - pressing C doesn't do anything - F1 does though. Ctrl / Space to change up and down gears - pressing either of these just puts the car in Neutral...the devs have some work to do if they can't get basic keyboard / controller inputs right!

That does sound sad and funny, maybe post in the bugs section on their forums? http://www.assettocorsa.net/forum/index.php?forums/controllers-and-peripherals-bugs-issues.19/
But yeah, you're missing on like 90% of the game's value if you play with a keyboard. :D
