Assistance - Calling all Samsung EVO owners

Well I ran the performance restoration tool the day it was released but that's it. Didn't really bench it since

That means it could have suffered from a reduction in performance which you didn't notice until you "upgraded" to the 850 EVO.

I'm interested to know if there's a difference in real world performance between a "good" 840 EVO and an 850 EVO.

i have only changed one of my evos, the other i had a different issue and its been sent back for a RMA.

I don't know if they are going to replace the drive or refund me for it as their site says the 840 is at its end of life now (not brought from ocuk)

if they replace it with another 840 evo i don't mind doing some testing. should hear back in 7 working days at the latest and they should get the drive tomorrow

No firmware update will fix flaky poor quality chips.

Not sure its "flaky" NAND as such but that the natural behaviour of it is different to what the controller is calibrated to expect and the disparity becomes wider over time making it increasingly harder for the controller to fetch reliable data. I think the first patch (assuming it did anything more than a "refresh" of the cells) tried to fudge how data was written to try and keep it within the controller's tolerances and they will probably now try and fudge the controller algorithms :S (all guessing).

doesn't look like their patch is going to be out this month as they said it would be!

Shocking !

Although I doubt that "missing the deadline" will cause any really problem. I'm happy to wait for a little while longer.

I just hope it does the job when it does arrive.

yeah, the waiting is worth it if it fixes the drive for good.

I just got a e mail about my second 840 evo and its now sitting in awaiting a replacement or credit stage.

if there website is anything to go by its now EOL and says to call them for any info on it so its looking like ill not get a replacement from them

Looks like a delay is likely which wouldn't supprise me, it was going to just be an update to the magician software but now their saying it will be a firmware update that will fix the issue. Firmware will extend the ETA no doubt.

They still have 24hours. But TBO I'd rather it wasn't rushed if it means it's effective and didn't introduce any new bugs.

Exactly.

I said this when they announced the first fix, I'd much prefer a 'soon', than an exact date.

Hopefully they'll crack it this time.
