Assistance - Calling all Samsung EVO owners

I brought one of my 840s from a local store (end is world) and I took it back explaining this issue after having it for 2 and a half months and they changed it for a 850 and I paid a extra £3 for it. no problems at all

Mine was bought about 18 months ago from OCUK, so they told me to contact Samsung.

Good to hear that "world" didn't mess about. That's good service.

Not been using my gaming PC for a few months, so i have only heard about this a few days ago

Samsung Evo 840 500gb

I have not tried the first fix at all. So i am waiting on the second "fix". I bought this drive 18 months ago. If it is not fixed i will be demanding a refund

you may find the first fix they released may fix your drive as this did sort the issue out on some of the 840 evos but not all which is why they are releasing the next fix for them

excellent, will restore everything to its full speed but only time will tell if its fixed or not.

did you have to do the firmware update on the drive before running the restoration tool?

It updated the FW, rebooted and ran the 3 tests. Back up to 500+speeds.

I will test again in 2 weeks and see what the second fix brings and if people reckon it is permanent.

If not i will be contacting the forest. Paid £270 for it so not happy and will be looking for a full refund.

Time will tell :)

I hope the fix sorts the drive for you and keeps the speeds. it can take a month or two before you start to see issues again. when I had mine I noted when I done a clean install, secure erase and then ran the tests every week and saved the screen shots so I could see if there was any issues with speed from week to week

Hmmm, this can't come soon enough tbh. I have actually noted the performance drop now and went looking for a reason, here it is :/

I didn't notice the slow down last time however....perhaps it was too soon for my usage?

Either way, not entirely sure I am happy with having yet another fix and what the proposal entails, surely...they are chewing into our lifespan here and that HAS to be a spec change from what we purchased?

The whole 970 thing has turned me into a right grumpy, nitpicking toolbag....I must admit that :)

I honestly don't think that most 840 EVO owners will experience any loss of lifespan due to this fix. We don't know for sure, but tests have been carried out and the expected lifespan is a lot longer than most users would be happy with. When I bought my EVO, I knew that the lifespan was likely to be shorter than other SSDs I could have bought, but I knew that I'd almost certainly replace it (or it may even fail) well before I actually wear the TLC NAND out. Yes, this fix might add to the wear, but I really don't think it's going to be an issue. OK, if it does increase wear significantly, and I have to replace my EVO in 4 or 5 years time, I don't think I'm going to be too upset.

I suppose it can be compared to the GTX970 issue, but this is more of a design fault than anything else. I'll be reasonably happy if the fix arrives before the end of this month and it does properly restore full performance permanently. If May arrives and there's no fix, or if the fix arrives and we're back here again in a month or two, then it's time to ask Samsung or the retailers to sort it out properly.

So Samsung were preparing the (second) "fix" in February, and now it's increasingly looking more likely that we will not see it released until May.

Not impressed, at all.

was meant to be released at the end of March which then changed to April the 14th and that has now been and gone so don't know what's happening now

Thankfully I bought mine from the rainforest so I should be able to get a refund quite easily once I explain all of this, won't do it for a few weeks though.

100% confirmed that I won't be getting another Samsung SSD, very poor show.

As long as they are focusing on making the update rock solid, I don't mind waiting. Don't want any further issues, and certainly don't want any data loss!

My Evo came from the rainforest back in January last year, Wonder what my chances would be of a refund?

Edit: Ah I see Nex did too...
