Assistance - Calling all Samsung EVO owners

Before :

After :

Although it wasn't bad before, the update does seem to have "ironed out" the performance a little. The "after" was done just a few minutes after the firmware update.

Back in 4-6 weeks. :)

Given the amount of work that would be involved in accepting all of the 840 Evo's back if this 2nd fix didn't work, I would assume they're reasonably confident it will resolve the issue - they have after all, spent a lot of time prepping this.

Yes, but the fix is a bodge, and it's going to keep re-writing the data, and our EVOs are going to wear out 3 days after the warranty ends.

Probably. ;)

I doubt it, Tech Report have an Evo in the lab that they have been hammering with constant re-writes, it's currently on a stupid number of Petabytes at the moment. We will all be running on 10TB SSDs long before these Evo's give up the ghost.

Probably ;)

I doubt it

So do I.

All sorts of predictions of SSDs wearing out, especially these "dodgy" EVOs.

Depending which article you read, these EVOs don't wear out until a fair few TB have been written (78 in this case, which is lower than other tests). My 250GB 840 EVO is reporting just over 5TB of writes, and it's had a fairly "busy" life in the 18 months I`ve owned it (including several secure erase/restores) and a couple of Windows 7 clean installs. It's currently about 90% full, and has been nearly full for over 6 months.

Yes, we have to take a bit of a chance on their reliability, but I suspect the 840 EVOs will not be wearing out any time soon, even if the new firmware has to re-write some of the data once in a while to maintain it's read performance. I`ve said before, for most users choosing an SSD, potential data write lifespan is a non-issue.

My real concern is if the new firmware does fix the issue properly or not. I think it will, but only time will tell.

Unbelievable - I've installed the new Magician 4.6 version (from the alternative download location) and it does not come up with an option to upgrade to the latest firmware (says I am on the latest).

Could this mean that they have pulled the new firmware already? Or have they run out of bandwidth for the firmware downloads as well as to download Magician?

I presume that there is no separate firmware download available (i.e. only option is for Magician to download it)?

I suspect they are limiting the number of downloads in case something goes wrong, and they get thousands of bricked drives.

If I were Samsung, I'd have a rep on each of the major forums explaining what's happening and easing the situation.

As my old boss used to harp on.. "communication is the key".

Magician 4.6 Says new firmware available.

Painless update, I'll retest in a few weeks without running anything manually beforehand.
