Astra VXR

Ian, you have posted 26 times in a thread asking for advice on a car YOU HAVE NEVER DRIVEN!!

Thats all I have to say. That speaks for itself. Well done though, keep up the good work.

Have you driven one? If not, wh are you posting?

It's Iain.

No, I've not.

Have you ever driven a G reg Escort with a midget in the boot? Because that's about as relevant for the advice everyones been trying to offer. I really cant understand why you're struggling so much with that

Lets limit all replies in future to those who have driven the car the OP mentions in a thread.

We'd be down to like 20 posts a day :D

The great thing about these threads is they bring us all together.

Normally, Iain, Morba and myself can't stand each other. Yet twice a week we come together to challenge the forces of darkness in a thread of lulz.

The astra is my favourite based purely on what i have read and seen, i've yet to experience any of the cars for myself. I'm not 100% set on the astra, its just my favourite so far out of the choice and is at the top of my list after going through a process of illumination. I've been in more golfs than hot dinners, all the way up to R32's, I DON'T WANT ONE. The r26 is out of budget regardless of whether its the best car or not (and i agree it is). The cupra r i hadn't really thought about, but i don't really remember hearing that much praise for them, one to try though. The main contenders are the ST and the VXR, but i have a feeling im going to be underwhelmed with the ST like i was with the civic type-r i test drove.

Shock as op returns to say he's going to test drive cars.

Teknotronic or whatever your usename is, any thoughts on that

You've been in a hot dinner?

You've been doing cooking wrong.

How do you know you are going to be 'underwhelmed' with the ST? If you go in with that sort of attitude then whats the point? Your last car was a Citroen C2 - all of these cars are miles better, so quite how you could be underwhelmed with an ST I really dont know.

Don't forget the Mazda3 MPS.

Bit harsh maybe, we just don't always see eye to eye. There are only a few people on the forum I can't stand but they live in my ignore list anyway.

I know what morba was saying about not letting these things bother you, but when you start contributing to a thread with good intentions and sound advice, it's really bloody annoying to have some random trying to pick a fight because of irrelevant facts

The Astra is a more aggressive drive than either the ST or Type R. Its very ON/OFF Boost. You really need to drive one before anything else its a love hate car. Some people like the Aggressive turbo punch some hate it.

They are generally quite reliable in standard form. They can suffer rattling clutches and the turbo seals blowing is quite common. Check the tyres for uneven wear as the earlier ones suffered bad geometry issues. When you drive one check the gear engadgment as they can be clunky to get in 2nd and 3rd especially on driven hard examples..

Check the service history, Vauxhall went through a phase of using the wrong oil for serviceing on the VXR the TIS listed the incorrect type so many had the wrong oil changed on the service although all owners should have been informed and the cars re-called its doubtfull all did..

REEEEALLLLL helpful for the guy. Really..

That was a snappy response to him having a go by repeating his question after we'd been helping him, not the initial advice offered in the thread. That was after I'd wasted the best part of 30 minutes typing quite detailed explanations of why I think the other cars are worth driving only to have him tell me to basically shut up.

Isn't selective reading great! You've picked his OP and then quoted a reponse I made to a post he made much later. That was NOT my answer to his first question.

Could well be power delivery thing - the VXRs party piece is going to be the big power and the way it's delivered. Not necessarily a good thing from a driving point of view, but some people do want the best feeling of speed in a straight line.

Mazda 3 MPS should be good for that too and definitely worth a look.

It's got me wondering if hot hatches are the only answer here though

This would be my choice i think.

Excellent handling, mechanical LSD as standard, plenty quick. Lots of tuning parts available from the states (where they love the Mazdaspeed 3 as its known) and goes totally under the radar of the car thieves

Something the VXR doesnt. Pricey's got stolen at least once, and theres plenty more tales where that came from on VXRonline.

I don't "know" im going to be, i just have a feeling i might be. I was underwhelmed with the civic as i was just expecting a lot more. Don't get me wrong, lovely car, but really lacking in grunt for what is suppose to be a hot hatch. It just didn't excite me at all.

Same problem as the R26, absolutely crazy insurance quotes. I really don't understand why the astra is so "cheap" in comparison.

The problem with the Civic is the way the engine works. It's a VTEC engine which makes it's power by revving very highly. This means to get the performance you need to absolutely cane it to death - something which you are probably loathe to do on a test drive. If you dont do this, it's slow and underwhelming.

But I agree with you and I dislike the Civic for exactly the same reason. It's power delivery annoys me.

Try shopping around for insurance. Your quotes dont make much sense, if anything I'd expect it to be the Astra thats crazy to insure as they are a huge theft and ditch magnet.
