** ASUS DO IT AGAIN: IPS, 144Hz & FREESYNC!!! Asus MG279Q thread **

Pathetic....

Definitely won't be going with this or any asus monitor for the foreseeable future, they make good products but their QC and CS has always been sub-par.

Monitors in general are an absolute ****ing joke these days though especially the IPS versions, seems like there is absolutely no QC or/and good CS now. Wish ocuk and other etailers would step up and tell these monitor manufacturers that this isn't right and refuse to stock their products until they sort the issues out.

That level of bleed is acceptable!?

Good old Asus washing their hands of trouble again. So glad I didn't act on impulse and buy one of these monitors by these crowns.

Come on Samsung and AOC! Bring us some decent monitors that we want!!!! No more TN panel rubbish as well please!

Yeah it's terrible that neither Asus nor the seller thought that the back light bleed/IPS glow on his monitor was excessive. It seems pretty bad from the pictures.

The monitor is fantastic though and the people who have purchased them lately seem to have got good monitors.

Not too sure you are going to get better IPS screen from any other manufacturer. Just look at any thread about any IPS monitor. There are always some with really bad glow in the corners.

I think you can replace Asus with the name of any monitor manufacturer lately. BenQ got some good press with the handling of the Freesync return, but then again that was a global issue so they were going to handle it differently.

It's more of lottery than the panel lottery. If you contact customer service and get a good person then you will be dealt with really well. Get a person having a bad day or an idiot then getting repair/refund/rma is going to be a real pain!!

Samsung and especially dell are pretty good for CS.

Not sure about benq and their dead pixel + back light bleed policy.

ASUS have been known for terrible CS throughout their product range for a number of years, in the past several months, they have only just started to improve their CS, their QC is still very dodgy/poor though. Will never forget the times where people were waiting for up to 4 month to get replacement motherboards and GPU's :o I also don't like how they give you refurbs instead of new monitors for warranty replacements especially when the monitors are barely several months old.

Other monitor manufacturers that I avoid are:

- LG (also got the same old about my bleed being acceptable and to use the monitor in bright conditions with a low brightness lol.....)
- Acer

Wish Dell or Samsung would do something with Freesync/G-Sync at 1440p IPS/PLS... they'd put together something much better than the likes of Acer/Asus or LG, I'm in no doubt! Can't stand this shoddy QC nonsense, no excuse for it at this price point, or any really for that matter. I don't think they realise how many buyers it puts off. Whatever it costs them to incorporate properly, it costs them more in RMA's and lost sales.

I'd have thought if they're selling a b-grade, it'll be a return without any issues apart from packaging, rather than someone actually wrong with the screen as that would go back to Asus. But then I suppose it depends if Asus consider dead pixels or a load of back light bleed a reasonable return or not.

Well going on the experiences here, anything other than a pure white screen of backlight bleed is 'acceptable' lol :)

The photos shared here have put me off, that black light bleed would probably etch itself onto my retinas.

At least 144hz IPS screens are possible, just have to wait for the QA to improve or another manufacturer to up the ante.

Personally want want want one but QC issues worry me.

exactly the same here, after doing some research just stopped me from buying it.
All these bleeding problems + stock call back + + free sync up to 90fps only, just sound silly.

Actually which is the best (pound for pound) one in the market?

Anyone watch any movies on this screen yet?

Today I decided to watch a movie and was very disappointed. It looked like compression artifacts in the background. I thought it might be that movie, so I tried a few different movies and they were all the same.

I tried the same movies on my old monitor and my pioneer kuro and they played fine, looked perfect.

This wouldn't worry me too much because I watch movies on the my Kuro, but, it signals to me that something isn't right with my monitor. Going to sit down tomorrow evening and do a good side by side testing in games and other desktop applications to see what's what.

I just want to say one thing about these photos, I am not sure photos are the correct way to show backlight bleed/IPS glow.

It always looks way worse than it actually is, which is probably why RMA's are so hard to get for this issue.

Here are three pictures of my monitor. Taken at brightness 100, brightness 50 and brightness 20. The thing is 100 looks really terrible and kinda red tinged, but in reality I can't see the red tinge and it doesn't look as bad as that.

I am only taking the photos now because my IPS glow didn't look near as bad as what other people's photos were showing. Yes at 100 brightness the glow is there and you can it clearly, but at 31 brightness, nope didn't notice it at all. So you can imagine my surprise when I sat down this evening and took some photos, 100 brightness looks awful on camera and 50 doesn't look great. If I was looking at these photos from somebody else I would nearly be recommending an RMA. But I can honestly say that the IPS glow is not visible while watching dark movies, playing dark games or anything like that.

Anyway here are the photos.

I had serious problems with playing video on the Asus, it doesn't seem to handle them at all well:

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=28207831&postcount=761

I am just after solving the problem, It's freesync. When it's on, movie quality is terrible. When I turned it off everything played normally.

Not sure if it's a monitor problem or a freesync problem. I tried changing the refresh rate to 144hz without turning off freesync on the monitor and it popped up telling me that freesync was disabled. But still movies had the compression artifacts.

I had to actually turn off freesync on the monitor before videos would play correctly.

Thanks for the info, really appreciate it! I had suspected that cameras might be more sensitive to it, I guess people (including myself) are weary of spending a lot of money on this panel as it's officially the first of its type on sale isn't it? Along with the Acer G-Sync version.

Wish it were possible to see it in person before I bought it, it's still tempting despite some of the issues people seem to be having.

It's no problem, glad to help out. I would just go and see any IPS monitor and see does the glow annoy you. I can honestly say that you can't judge it by pictures. Also the other thing is how often will you be using the monitor in a completely dark room?

The only issue that is worrying me is that movie quality is so bad when Freesync is active. I know DrBombCrater had the same issue as me. It's concern for me because is it affecting the quality of games.

Has anyone other than me and Drbombcrater tried watching movies? Can you try with Freesync turned on and off on the monitor and see do you notice any difference. It might just be a fault on our monitors.
