Captain America, same scene, at 40% brightness:

Haha, I'll give it a go tonight!

To be fair though the sharpness / text is absolutely fine for me.

I had a quick stab with Freesync, I set it to 'on' in the monitor, 90hz for the desktop and upgraded my drivers but I can't find the option to enable it in the CCC.

I did notice that the CCC is still saying version 14.something (instead of 15.x) so I'm not convinced it updated correctly - I'll try doing a clean install and see if that works.

Yeah you have to uninstall the old drivers and reboot, then go into device manager and make sure you uninstall any display drivers that are present, make sure you select delete software too. Then install the new drivers.

The option to enable it is in the flat panel properties.

Thanks for posting these mate! Could you give your impressions of the back light bleed - does the photo greatly exaggerate the it or does it look like that to your eyes?

Photo greatly exaggerates the effect. It's definitely there and noticeable but isn't the white wash it looks like!

I think my biggest 'beef' at the the moment is getting used to gaming at 27" / 1440p - my aim and field of vision hasn't adjusted yet but that's not the fault of the monitor!

Played some BF4 over the weekend with freesync enabled, as my loan R9 290 can pretty much keep me 40-70fps constant with ultra settings this monitor works perfectly..... and woow it does make a difference (at least for me)

Back-light bleed on mine is only noticeable in a room in near total darkness AND when there is a very dark scene being displayed. In no way does it distract under normal conditions.

I applied the ICC colour profile from TFTCentral last night and it's made another noticeable improvement on the colours (a lot more natural now).

I forgot that I was previously using an ICC colour profile from my previous Eizo Foris FG2421 monitor which was causing all the colours to look oversaturated.

On another note - I've got a bee in my bonnet about sharpness now; I wish I hadn't read anything and started playing about; I may not have noticed otherwise!

Text isn't the issue, I've just begun noticing certain things in games like interfaces / menus don't quite like I'd expect them to (softer than I remember).

When I play about with Vivid Pixel (the Sharpness menu is greyed out under Racing Mode), I can see what people meant about it being either too soft or too sharp.

Settings 0 and 25 seem identical and a little soft as 50 and above is too sharp.

The thing I noticed late last night before having to tear myself away to get some sleep before work was the detail on the 'town portal' in Diablo 3 (grey circle with blue flames around it) has detail in stone which seems lost at the default settings and is regained with higher sharpness / vivid pixel settings (but then the picture looks unnatural / overly sharp).

I'm going to do some comparison tests against a Dell Professional P2314H monitor I've got (an amazing 60hz IPS monitor that I always compare my screen against) and see if there is a difference I can capture on camera.

Also, I'm not able to access the 'Aspect Control' menu - that's greyed out too. Is that only available on a certain interface (n.b. - I'm currently using a full-sized DisplayPort cable - not the one that came with the monitor)?

I've sold my Eizo screen to a friend at the weekend and set it up in his place after giving it a good clean and it looked awesome with his setup / rig - I keep looking it and thinking "have I made the right choice?" lol :)

I'm still within that annoying 7 days DSR period (until Thursday) and it's giving me cold feet at the moment.

Why must I beat myself up over every new peripheral I purchase!! :)

On the plus side, I did a quick multiplayer test on COD:AW last night and it was really good - very enjoyable, good response time on the panel, shame I'm mega-rusty at the game and played badly!

FWIW this is probably the best freesync monitor on the market, and it does seem like you have a good one .... so enjoy it ?

When using freesync on BF4 im playing quite badly, probably as i need to stop compensating for input lag :)

This is why I asked you to try the RTS/RPG mode. Because in this mode you can change the sharpness and turn off Vivid Pixel. It looks much better in games and using desktop applications.

Why is the MG279Q higher contrast than Acer? Would an new batch acer be the same contrast? I don't understand why as they have the same panel, is it possible for the manufacturer (asus vs acer) to make the panel higher contrast? I don't understand why it is higher, other than the revision of panel. If I bought an acer to replace my MG279Q just to get Gsync... do you think the contrast / image quality would be a downgrade? The MG279Q is good for an IPS but still relatively low contrast... I really want Gsync but I don't want any less contrast! The acer doesn't look nice but its the only option ATM.

Not fussed with movies so is this the daddy freesync screen for gaming?

For out and out gaming? Nope the BenQ would be the better choice. It's a gamers monitor and comes with much more features , like blur reduction and faster response time, than this monitor.

This is aimed at the gamer who has been waiting for a non TN monitor fast enough to game on.

When using freesync on BF4 im playing quite badly, probably as i need to stop compensating for input lag :)

Lol you are totally correct - I need to just enjoy it!

So I've had a good old session last night with the monitor and have the following updates:

- The sharpness this in Diablo 3 last all in my head - there was absolutely no difference between the two monitors on a side-by-side comparison

- Freesync is amazing! I was totally not prepared for it at all - the 'solidness' (I know that's not a word but it's a good way to describe it) of the picture is really very good. It's almost like using strobed motion blur reduction modes but without the negatives of the flicker / cross-talk

- With Freesync, I saw a tangible improvement in my game in Battlefield Hardline. Like a BenQ XL2430T monitor I tested before (and had to send back because the colours were just horrific on it), it almost had an effect of 'slowing down time' - I was able to see everything happening a couple of frames before it happened and it improved my game

- I definitely noticed the increased input lag though; there is a big difference between this and just running with 144hz which is a real shame. The 90hz cap is also annoying to work with

- I'm beginning getting used to 27" / 1440p screen now, I played the following:

- COD:AW - did okish, monitor performed very well

- Quake Live at 144hz - felt / looked amazing! The screen kept pace amazing well and a pure lack of input lag gave me no excuses; I had some very tough competition and trailed behind but I knew that was me and not the hardware

- Titanfall - wow, very, very smooth and the lack of blurring was very tangible over my Eizo 120hz screen. This was one game where I basically had to use Turbo240 (the strobed mode) to compete and with the MG279Q, this definitely wasn't needed; very solid picture

- Battlefield Hardline - *drool* - this game looked so good - Freesync had a massive benefit on this; even without any tweaks I was still getting a 75-100fps framerate. I need to learn to live without Freesync to not get input lag associated with it (I wonder if my game improved with Freesync on because the input lag roughly matched my Eizo screen and I was more used to compensating for it?!)

I'm so pleased I applied TFTCentral's ICC profile though - the screen looks absolutely fantastic.

I went back and replayed Captain America again and went back to the scene as I posted previous - the colours appeared more natural and the backlight bleed appeared reduced now calibrated.

Ahh gotcha - will give that a go tonight.

Do you know why the aspect control feature is greyed out though?

quoting this post as it's shorter :p but replying to both of your posts.

I think you spent a bit of quality time with the new monitor and are beginning to appreciate it a bit more. Buyer's remorse is a terrible thing :D

It's a terrific monitor, really is. The 90hz isn't a problem for me at the moment. But If I upgrade my video card it probably will become one. The beauty of Freesync/Gsync is that I shouldn't have to upgrade for a while because games look so smooth.

The aspect ratio is always greyed out in native resolution. You will have to be playing at a lower resolution for it to become available. It probably needs to be a 4:3 ratio too like 1024 * 768 before it becomes active.

I finally heard back from Asus and they sided with the retailer, again not OCUK, that the level of bleed in my monitor was acceptable.

In case anyone is interested: http://imgur.com/a/r81lr

Just going to have it refunded as "unwanted".

See Asus shoot themselves in the foot, I'd like one of these but don't want to end up getting a lemon like this and end up returning it and losing £40, monitors arn't cheap to insure :( That bleeding is terrible, I wouldn't even expect that from a cheap korean import.

That level of bleed is acceptable!?

Good old Asus washing their hands of trouble again. So glad I didn't act on impulse and buy one of these monitors by these crowns.

Come on Samsung and AOC! Bring us some decent monitors that we want!!!! No more TN panel rubbish as well please!

When did you buy the monitor? Just wondering will you be getting it back or will you just tell them to keep it?

If you get it back would you be able to check when it was manufactured? It's on a sticker near the power connection.
