** ASUS DO IT AGAIN: IPS, 144Hz & FREESYNC!!! Asus MG279Q thread **

Ok, I thought I had fixed the video by turning Freesync off, but, it doesn't solve the problem at all.

Can anybody please watch a movie on this monitor and see do they notice noise like me and DrBombCrater have?

It might be too late to return it, but I am going to ring them tomorrow and see can I get it replaced or refunded.

Well, I presume the silence is because nobody else has noticed this issue and that your monitors are fine when watching movies.

Okay. I've had this monitor for a few days now and its not been an entirely straightforward experience. Out of the box and initially set up (using tft central settings) I was pleased. No dead pixels. No dirt etc trapped. There was however some IPS glow/BLB (not sure which it is) in the bottom right corner similar to some of the pics you have seen in this thread (ie from Melmac post 878) but not especially extreme. To the eye it was pretty minimal (esp with brightness settings down to 30) and against everything except a pure black background not at all visible.

The following morning something strange happened. In the same bottom right hand corner where there was IPS glow/BLB there was now a black shadow. Made everything super murky there like a bad case of vignetting. Terrible.

I rang the supplier (not OC) - sent pictures - was ready to get return details when the problem spontaneously corrected itself. This was on Thursday. Since then the shadowing has not returned despite gaming sessions and normal use. And the BLB whilst still there seems to be fairly minimal. Its almost like the shadowing in some way partly corrected the BLB...

I can live with it. I love the 1440p, the 144hz for normal desktop use, the IPS colour etc. The freesync works really well with my new MSI 390 - I can play GTA etc at ultra/v high settings and even though framerate is in the 40s it looks fluid. So I have a dilemma. Do I roll the dice again knowing I may end up with a monitor with dead pixels or extreme BLB. Or is the shadowing an indication of some serious underlying fault?

Seems to me there is an issue not just with QC but in the manufacture if there are consistent problems in that lower right hand corner.

Melmac. I have had a look at a few films and they look fine to me. The Matrix (where the BLB can be seen a bit because it is so dark) looks great as does Lawrence of Arabia. I'm not seeing compression artifacts. However I've just scanned and not actually watched a whole movie through. Youtube videos etc look fine...

On balance - this is clearly by no means a perfect monitor and at its price you would expect it to be. However, right now the flaws are pretty minor compared to the pluses. I am not going back to a monitor without this feature list (I came from a 8 yr old 21inch samsung...) and as there won't be anything comparable in the marketplace for a while I'm going to stick with it.
Should I?

NB Just noticed the photos are upside down (don't know why) so the shadowing is top left in the picture - it is bottom right corner in reality... And here's another pic

Is there anyway to check the firmware on this monitor?

Would be very interested to see what firmware people have on their monitors and what version I have. Is the movie problem I am saving related to the flickering that was happening before the recall.

You would notice it very quickly. Thanks for testing. This issue bothers me more than the IPS glow or the back light bleed. Those are things that you deal with as part of buying a monitor these days. IPS monitors will have glow, you just hope that it won't be too bad.

The flickering, noise etc while watching movies is not an issue that you expect to have. And since I started looking really closely while playing games I have noticed random patches of flickering textures etc. Which I was blaming previously on the games now I am not so sure.

The joys of modern day monitor purchasing.

You aren't using VividPixel are you? Another possibility is that you're seeing some form of inversion artifacts. I have not yet reviewed this monitor so don't know if they are present, but some users are very sensitive to them and would readily notice them whilst others won't. Take a look at my review of the XL2730Z for some examples of how these might manifest themselves and see if that's similar to what you're seeing.

When will/are you going to review this monitor?
Could you make unboxing video on youtube aswell, please?

I will have a look at your review later PCM2 when I am home. I am not using vivid pixel at all, I have it at 0. But I tried various settings of Vivid pixel on, various sharpness settings and some of the different profiles on the monitor. The same artifacts in every setting.

Currently I use the RPG/RTS profile with Vivid pixel 0 and sharpness at 40. It looks best to me.

Don't want to go to the trouble of getting an RMA for the monitor for them to notice nothing wrong with it :(

When ASUS have a sample for me! Although I have to say the general user feedback on this monitor puts me off dedicating a lot of my time reviewing something like this if it's unlikely people will be persuaded to buy it. So if something else comes along I can't say the MG279Q would be given any sort of priority. And I won't be doing any unboxing videos, not something I usually do and I don't really see the value in it (sorry).

I'm really interested in this monitor due the ips,2560x1440,freesync,144hz but quality problems make me more cautions to buy it now,and that there is still no support for crossfire.
Where is Samsung,Dell,Beng with theirs 2560x1440 ips freesync 144hz?
Everyone is saying the're coming but I didn't see any announcement on E3?

Yes mini display port cable supplied by asus.

First time poster. But have been following these boards for years. Was very keen on this monitor initially but then got worried by all the pics and reports from other users on this board and others of terrible QA issues. So much so I cancelled my order twice. Before pulling the trigger.

Just wanted to provide my experience for those sitting on the fence about trying this monitor. That I got mine yesterday and first impressions, very happy I did. No dead pixels or dirt, and very very minimal backlight bleed on the bottom right corner. This is with brightness at 100% which will be reduced once I get a chance to play with settings etc. so definitely not a problem.

The only thing I can slightly complain about is that over on the bottom right hand side of the screen near where the OSD joystick is at the back there is two vertical pixels which are brighter than the rest of the screen. Almost as if the AG coating missed them. It’s tiny and only noticeable on an all-white screen.

Overall very happy with the screen, definitely think it’s worth a punt as long as you’re happy to return in case you get a dud.

Quarktran, can you please post up a screenshot of your desktop please, actual size, and maybe a screen shot with a webpage open, again full size. I would really appreciate it.

Oh, put the pictures in a spoilers so you don't annoy people here :)

Sure no probs. In work but I'll put up some pics later on tonight when I get home. Planning to tweak the settings anyway and was going to use the profile on tft central as a starting point etc. So can do it then

Thanks man!! :)

Here you go. Just back from work so didn't have time to tweak settings. These are some quick and dirty pictures from my camera phone literally about a foot away from the monitor where my desk chair is.

Taken at 100% brightness / 80% contrast on Racing mode.

First image is desktop ( fallout 4 background) as lots of blacks and besides dont think anyone's interested in family photos :-)

Lastly picture of MS word ( Very Exciting)
If you look at where the mouse cursor is just below the middle right hand side of the screen, you should hopefully see the small 2 pixel line that is always brighter than the rest on white backgrounds.

Have to say photos don't do it justice at all and even looking at these there is an added red tinge and variance of colour which really isn't there.

Checked a few movies on this as seen mention of some movies not playing well / compression artifacts but no such problem.

As said I am very happy with the monitor to date, but haven't had a chance to calibrate / tweak it yet, or indeed even get to test out freesync for more than 5 minutes.

Happy to provide more screenies etc, if there is anything in particular you want me to test let me know but will probably be tomorrow, or Saturday before I get a chance to actually put the monitor through its paces. Hence why the stickers / tags are still on it, just in case.
