** ASUS DO IT AGAIN: IPS, 144Hz & FREESYNC!!! Asus MG279Q thread **

I'm having a hard time deciding between this monitor or the BenQ XL2730Z.

The reason is this only has a Freesync range of 35Hz to 90Hz where as the BenQ has 40Hz to 144Hz.

Just think if you are going to use sometimes FreeSync or always. I play CS:GO for example with Freesync off because I think is better play like this way (more FPS) and I'm enjoying the Asus MG279Q for the real colors that brings me the IPS panel.

I had the same hard time, but I always wanted to have an IPS screen hehe maybe the Benq have some features for help gamers, but I'm the class of people that setup his screen one time and don't touch the setup if don't need to. If you are like me choose Asus, I you like the extra feautures of Benq and you like to put a setup for movies, other for games, other for... choose Benq, because it has a controller with better access for do that things. And for I said before of FreeSync ofc

Last question before I buy, I remember there being a recall due to a firmware issue, Has this been resolved ?

Very few were shipped to retailers with the dodgy firmware, and they were recalled.

If any got to customers, there were very few. If any were still on sale, I would be absolutely staggered.

Is someone able to clarify the refresh rate bheviour on this? I've never had a monitor which supports above 60hz.

So let's say I got a MG279Q and just set my max FPS limit to 144 (in Catalyst Control Panel or the game I was running) and off we went, and my frame rate fluctuated between say 50-120fps... Would all be OK? Any issues with VSync?

Or is running at a variable rate well below 144fps (eg 60-120) a bad idea and you should instead stick with a pretty solid vsync'd 60fps instead?

BTW - I'll be connecting through a Dual-DVI if that has any bearing on the matter.

You wont be connecting through dual dvi as it doesn't have any. It's display port or HDMI.

Just play the game and let the frame rate run where it wants. It's no problem if it goes over 144fps.

Oh! I think my KVM usage may prove an issue then. I have two computers going into my monitor (& keyboard & mouse).

At the moment this is an Aten CS1782A which supports upto 2560x1600 (via dual link DVI) upto 60hz. So not only would I need a new KVM switch for "Display Port", but looking around, it appears KVM switches in general only support 60hz at high res.

So it appears 60hz is my limit :(

Guess stick with my current setup and get a Asus PB278QR then...

Hello folks

Putting Freesync out of the equation (as I have a 980ti and don't plan on moving to AMD), and assuming/hoping I get one which works as it should, is this still the best 27" 1440p IPS for under £500?
Thanks

I also have a 980Ti, but I wont be purchasing a freesync screen to match up with it. Why purchase a monitor when one of its key features isn't compatible with your card? 144hz IPS panels are still fairly new atm, so I think its worth waiting a little while. Or if you really can't wait then maybe going for the G-Sync Predator instead.

Having a look at getting this but have experienced many horrors with Asus Monitors.

Went through 4 x Swifts each with dead pixels, 2 x 4K's with a ton of dead pixels etc...

So is this in the same ball park ? Did Asus yet again cheap out on production and QC of this panel ?

Bad luck mate. On my first ROG Swift and not one dead pixel since bought on day one. Monitor runs so good it's scary.

I had two bad MG279Q's in a row. No huge dead pixel problems - just unacceptable levels of IPS glow.
I know Melmac has had problems too.
I've rather lost faith in IPS monitors for the moment.
I'm going to go for a VA for now. I know they're slower but at least the image quality is good.

Cant get this monitor running at 144hz.

Using the supplied displayport cable, radeon 7970 and windows 10x64, when applying the 144hz or 120hz it reverts back to 60hz afer a few seconds and the 144/120hz doesnt show in the windows monitor/catalyst settings. Turning the monitor off and on,the 144/120hz option shows.

Is the supplied cable faulty or rubbish. :(

Nice screen though, no dead pixels and a little back light bleed and ips glow using tft central settings. Whilst I prefer glossy screens, I like the screen coating.

Aye.

I contacted asus support, one suggestion was because the monitor is not officially supported with windows 10, it might not work.:o

I got lucky with the MG279Q on my second monitor - near perfect with no dead pixels and minimal ips glow. The first one had a dead pixel which was unacceptable for the price I paid for this monitor. With monitors, I found it best to get them from a place where exchanges can be done easily. I knew the limitation with FreeSync on the MG279Q is 90Hz and I'm okay with that.

Happy for you mate:)
Post some photos

I've nearly bought this a couple of times but having had a £390 27" IPS 2560x1440 Hazro for years I just can't justify shelling out on such a tiny upgrade :(

Still awaiting decent freesync, superwides!
I bought one of these to replace my HZ27WB. Putting aside that I had to return it because the entire left hand side of the screen was a blurry mess (even when the monitor wasn't connected to the PC), I wasn't convinced by the working right side of the screen that it was worth the cost. I would buy one if I needed a new monitor, but replacing a high quality IPS panel that is the same size and resolution as this screen is a waste.

Before i return this monitor, i just wanted to do a sanity check. Is this level of backlight bleed normal? Probably not, but anyway i had to ask.
