Asus ROG Ally

I got a ROG Ally yesterday but having some issues with Game Pass games.

Whenever I try to launch a game in Gamepass it says "CLiP license device ID does not match the device ID in the bound device licence".

I've tried a couple of things like signing out of the store etc but nothing so far has worked.

Anyone had this issue and found a way to get it working?

Not sure why but it’s working now, only thing I could see was an optional windows update. Will try again later but hopefully sorted.

And now it’s working, any must do’s or must get for a new Rog Ally user?

Skull & Co Grip case and the Skull & Co carry case are both excellent buys - I also went with a matte anti glare screen protector as I prefer it to standard glass - Also got Skull & Co thumb grips for the joysticks.

Sooner or later you'll probably want to upgrade the storage and also acquire an external battery pack. A carry case also comes in handy, and so does fitting a screen protector.

These are the items I've got:

Travel Case

Thumb grips

Silicon case

Battery Pack < Not cheap, so wait for it to go on offer (if you have Prime). But an excellent battery for any use.

Nvme Adapter < Your usual size nvme drive can be fitted with this adapter, don't worry about cooling issues, my own personal experience is it's a non event. And I've got a 4TB drive installed.

The Rog Ally has a fantastic recovery system, which will install a box fresh install straight onto your new drive with no drama. You can do a drive clone if you wish but that's a lot more faff.

They look great thanks.

For some reason those links do not appear to be working?

but have notice battery life isnt great

One of the downsides with these handhelds, the SoC isn't really built from the ground up for this kind of use despite being marketed by AMD as such - it is a repurposed laptop SoC and the minimum power draw is quite high (around 5W IIRC). I've tuned my Legion Go which uses the same SoC to get around 8 hours of watching YouTube with a 5 watt TDP and maximum power savings (and it still performs pretty good) but it could do so much better in terms of battery life. I tend to use mine more as a powerful tablet than for gaming hence going for the Go with detachable joycons and built in stand.

IMO if they put the effort into it the second generation of these devices could be really good.

Isn't that what Samsung does with their expensive foldable phones? They see a scratch on the hinge and then refuse to repair any faults under warranty as the phone was "obviously" dropped. Unless of course you had purchased their premium accidental damage cover.

Extremely scummy behaviour from big companies.

Asus have been famous for terrible customer support for many years on all their products. Them operating their warranty department on a for profit basis should hardly be surprising at this stage.
We already know they wont change, as they've been called out before.

Doesn't stop the Ally being a great device (with a timebomb MicroSD reader). Just hope most here are able to deal with stores for replacement, rather than dealing with Asus themselves.

Quite interesting to see what they'll do with this ROG Ally X

Sounds like they're going to stick a bigger battery in it, but surely they've got to be tweaking the TDP's of the chips a bit better too to get more out of it (Like lower CPU clocks etc)

As they didn't sound like they only wanted 30 or 40% better battery but more

The problem really is the SoC/GPU power - the CPU part actually gates and power manages the cores pretty well and is quite efficient albeit is a bit overkill compared to the level of GPU performance on offer but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Despite being marketed by AMD as a handheld gaming SoC really it is a laptop SoC repurposed and not quite as well done as it could have been built from the ground up for handheld gaming.

CPU part also uses 4x Zen4 (performance) and 4x Zen4C (efficiency sort of) cores with 16 threads total so power use is fairly decent for the performance on offer.

is there an equivalent desktop cpu part (not apu)

Did anyone see those new amd apus? Not sure when they’re out but they seemed insane

Don't think there is a direct desktop equivalent - the 7600 non X is close performance wise but not power, but desktop parts tend to have more cache, etc. which helps over a broader range of applications. I find it kind of hilarious when these handhelds can clock in at around 14K in Cinebench R23 MT using 30 watt while the 7800X3D comes in at around 18-18.5K using 80 watt, the 5800X 15K and the 7600 non X 14K (using ~75 - 80 watt).
