Asus UL30A

I was close to ordering one of these until they sold out from the site I had my eyes on. Found an Acer instead for cheaper, how does this compare specs wise:

Intel® ULV Core 2 Duo (ULV SU9400, 3 MB L2 cache, 1.4GHz, 800MHz FSB)
13.3" (Acer CineCrystal, 1366x768 HD, High Brightness, LED Backlit)
Win Vista (will be upgrading to Win 7 Ultimate 64)
4GB (DDR3 1066MHZ)
320GB
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330 with 512MB Dedicated RAM
5-in-1 card reader (SD//MS/MS-Pro/MMC/xD-Picture card™)
3x USB 2.0 ports
Kensington lock slot
8 Hrs+ Battery Life
1.6Kg

I've just ordered one, it's cheaper then the Asus too!

Guys, CPW still has them if you phone them up. I have been looking for a decent ultraportable with good battery life for university. Just phoned them up now and it should come tomorrow :)

£349 with free next day delivery. Didn't ask how many were left though. Just gave them the product number: ASUUL30

That's not a bad price, same as the Acer Travelmate mentioned in the other thread. I was gonna get this one too but ended up with the Acer.

That Acer you mentioned in the other thread looks bang on for the money. Better processor, more RAM, just a shame about Windows 7 but thats easy enough to sort out.

How are you finding the Acer with battery life? You managing to get the 8hrs it claims?

I just fitted it with a Crucial C300 SSD today so it's flying atm. :D I've still not actually tested the battery life accurately, all I can say is it lasts a long time, pretty much all day without a charge.

i rang up cpw yesterday and hopefully mine will arrive today *fingers crossed*

comes with the myhub online storage thing, 12 month warranty and 1 year bullguard security.

there were 7 left yesterday

I received a tracking number by text from last night for it so if you did then yours should be out today. Im just hoping mine comes in the next 15min. I have to go to uni and won't be back till tomorrow, im just dying to have a play on it

my initial impressions of the ul30 are good. a very nice looking piece of kit, love the keyboard. the trackpad takes some getting used to though, dont like the 2 finger strolling, why cant it just be one finger.

i considered getting an acer 3810TZ (i think), but i dont trust acer's reliability despite their ability to cram good spec into low price.

my dad recently got the toshiba T130 deal and that too looks pretty nice, couldnt get on with its trackpad though (maybe drivers) plus the tosh bloatware seriously slows it down, whereas the asus isnt so bad on that front.

ps, cpw even though in a win7 recovery disk, which i presume can be used for a clean install?

coz... That would be to move the mouse cursor down? :p

You have a drag and drop feature, with a double tap-hold, but I think you can change the behaviour of the gestures. I've changed three finger tap for 'back'.

The trackpad isn't the best, but it gets better, and less grippy.

Not sure, but I know you can download all the drivers and Asus utilities from their website. You can also do a clean install from a Windows 7 Home Premium DVD and using the laptop key.

lol, but my old acer has one finger vertical scrolling when on the far right of the trackpad. guess their compensating for the smaller pad on smaller laptops.
i think the pad drivers it came with are 'ETDware', would synaptics be better?

i'm happy without doing a clean install, all seems to run fine

I too had issues with the trackpad on my UL30a until I got so fed up with things last weekend that I checked the Asus download site again and found some drivers I'd missed before. Now those drivers have been installed I've made the trackpad a heck of a lot less sensitive, so now it won't move the cursor around the screen if I just swipe my wrist or hand on the pad and I've also made the detected area the smallest possible. It was so nice being able to write without having to hold my hands in the air to prevent the trackpad messing me around. :)

Well, my UL30A is back from its second CPW service. This time they found a fault but charged me for the privilege of fixing it (I argued the toss but I was rather held over a barrel - pay up or don't get the laptop). Ironically they didn't charge me for the first 'no fault' service so I guess it's karma.

Apparently they replaced the motherboard which makes sense since it was the wired network controller that was acting up.

So, imagine my surprise when I turned it on and the BIOS showed it now had an SU7300 CPU (all the cheap stock, including mine, had SU2300s). Well, thank you very much. I don't mind the £39.95 service bill quite so much any more. :D

PS - Yes, it is my laptop. Still had the label I put on it. :)
