ASUS XG438Q 43 inch 120Hz 4K announced

Just came across that vid @roysters , some good info and good to know you can regedit Windows to tell it display text correctly :)

Makes it viable again for me!! Acer is due though with the updated panel/tech ;)

Updated how though? It will be slight revision with the extra brightness, but no indication BGR will be any different, plus same inherent VA issues. Plus it seems like it's coming in a good £250-300 more. I'd be prepared for more disappointment with that one I'd say.

£1000+ upgrading to the latest half-assed effort from monitor manufacturers every few years....

At this point I'm considering an OLED TV every 3 years and donating it to charity when the screen burn becomes too severe. At current prices of ~£1200, you're basically leasing the best no-compromise display for £400 a year.

Windows tweaks and cleartype adjustments for BGR help a bit but don’t completely correct the blurry text due to the pixel layout. I experimented a lot when I was testing it.

yes it does help a bit. to be honest, it's not horrible to start with anyway and i think some people have feared the worst without seeing it in person or really knowing what it's like.

It would probably depends on what that person would use the monitor for. If it was purely for gaming as some of my rigs are then it would not bother me. However if I was to code. Write novels on it full time etc then yes I would not be choosing it as my main monitor.

It all comes down to cost if this was £600 to £700 I would be more forgiving it's faults etc. At its present price I would expect a lot better.

Yes it depends on usage but my point was more that a lot of people online are jumping to conclusions about what it might look like without having seen it in person.

True and I am quite an impartial person. I always give things a chance. I just managed to pick a second hand ASUS XG438Q which had been used for over a month and pretty much paid half RRP with a discount code. Did a lot of research and for that price would go on the kids PC which would enable them to use switch etc on it.

Had it for 2 days and its not too bad - had to download the app to change the cleartype text and my god it looks so much better then the default. Used TFT Central and changed monitor settings 100Mhz and OD4 and colour settings.

Shadowboost on 1.

Its pales in comparison to the Samsung Cr49RG. Due to the nature of a large 4k screens - I find FPS easier and kills easier to get as heads / bodys are larger. However my god the view feels so restrictive compare to 32 9.

Playing Destiny 2 / Battlefield 5/ Red Dead 2 / COD seems a massive downgrade. ( Once you try these games ultra ultra wide you will never want to go back )

Getting used to it and will use it for a couple of weeks before I give my final verdict.

I do believe half the RRP is a ok price for this.

At That Price wait for the ACER which has already been released in some countries. I would see the reviews for that one first.
I am waiting an eternity, but can't afford these prices I will have to wait for a deal of some sort. But yeah I am waiting for the Acer and the better Asus to come out and decide.

have to admit I am enjoying the XG438Q more then I thought I would. It allows me to play all those console RPG ports in full screen etc.

text is fine on it once I changed the clear type to brg with an app.

I setup it up on a corner desk with its own keyboard and I just move my wireless mouse across. Means I can play ultra wide one side and 4K the other.

If you can wait I am sure deals will spring up.

How is it for office use? Does the text look okish? I plan to game on this but also write code and it will up to arms length.

Honestly if you are planning to code have you thought about the Samsung 49 monitor?

The ASus is ok but Samsung is better and clearer.

a 32 4K would be sharper as well.

I am on an LG 24 1200p (16:10) monitor that is more than 12 years old so anything new will be sharper haha.

The 49 was initially a contender but the super ultra wide seems wrong for gaming and once a ps5 comes the ps4 will be relocated and connected to the monitor and I despise black bars. Being used to the 16:10 monitor now I will miss the vertical by using super ultra wide.

Picked one of these up earlier and can absolutely say that the text is a non-issue imo. I run at 125%, ran Cleartype and got no problem with it whatsoever. Cool as ****
