ASUS XG438Q 43 inch 120Hz 4K announced

What app is that, if you don't mind me asking. Also, if possible, a link maybe ?

Thank you in advance ! :)

Edit: Is DP cable still the best to use or HDMI ? :o

I used this tool on the CG437K... https://github.com/bp2008/BetterClearTypeTuner/releases but it really doesn't make it perfect... it's improved, but you cannot get away from this being a BGR panel.

Switching back to my 32" 4K VA RGB monitor, the difference is obvious. This is not a problem for gaming, but if you do any kind of text work, personally I'd stay away from any BGR monitor. It doesn't seem to bother some people, but I can't quite understand why because the difference is VERY obvious to my eyes... sometimes it's OK, but a lot of text is noticeably worse no matter what you do.

Thanks ! I will have a look at it, although for now it is pretty good for me. I used the advice from this thread over at reddit, that was posted a few pages back. ASUS XG438Q BGR subpixel layout and it was better then from Level1Techs forum, for me at least ! :D

I also have it running on 8 bit colour, since Level1Techs did mention the panel isn't a true 10 bit panel anyway. Did you try making a personalized User Profile as well, to see if you got things sorted ?

Posted by WordlySandwich7 over at Reddit, link above.

I have this monitor too and was a little weirded out by the subpixel ordering. However, after looking into things I discovered that the 40" 4K monitor I have been using for the last 4 years also had BGR subpixels and I never noticed.

After reading the tftcentral and techspot in depth reviews, I landed on some solid settings for 120Hz 4K 8-bit SDR (personally don't care about HDR).

First off, set scaling to 100% in Windows. Remove/delete any color calibrations you have. Also delete the ClearType registry keys that exist in Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Avalon.Graphics\DISPLAY*, leave only the (Default) (value not set) one.

On the screen OSD: GameVisual: User Mode Color: Brightness 60, Contrast 70, Saturation 50, Color Temp (User Mode, R: 100, G: 96, B: 100), Gamma: 2.2 Image: OD Level 4, ASCR Off, Adaptive-Sync On, Blue Light Filter Level 0, Dynamic Dimming Off, Shadow Boost Level 1.

This gives nice colors and very clear text without any software tweaks.

For me, the most important setting is actually Shadow Boost. You'll notice if you view the grey row of this image used for testing chroma subsampling, something weird happens with Shadow Boost Level 0; http://www.avsforum.com/attachments/9759 (make sure you view this in vanilla Paint with no scaling). It appears like the grey pixels, although all the same value, have some local dimming occuring? Setting Shadow Boost to Level 1 virtually elimates this, which I think contributes to the text quality.

Personally, for that added touch, I've ordered a ARCTIC Z1 Pro (Gen 3) arm to mount the display so I can flip it 180 degrees for RGB ordering. I tested this manually and it definitely improves text sharpness another step (i.e., the OS doesn't care that I've set the display to be rotated, it assumes RGB ordering either way).

You can definitely make it better, but it won't be the same as an RGB panel, that's just not possible. Some people are going to be more sensitive to it than others though of course.

That's true, guess I'm bit luck and it's alright for me. The only thing after have a curved monitor as my main for about 5 yrs, is that looking at the edges of this one it looks like it slightly convex for me. Hopefully something that will disappear over time though ! :p

Whopsi, sorry for double post here, although it is a while since the last one. :p

Have had the screen for a couple months now and the convexity issue is all gone now. But.. and not sure if it is the monitor, DP cable or not enough GPU grunt, but sometimes (mostly when starting the PC, but a couple times when it been on for a while) the screen seems to go into sleep mode and have to turn it on and off to get it back to working again. Not had it happen on my two side monitors though, so there is that.

I have the screen connected to a AMD RX 5700 XT 50th Anniversary Edition (stock settings) and also these two additional monitors; ASUS ROG Strix XG35VQ 3440x1440 and Voxicon D27QO IPS 27" 2560 x 1440 (Scandinavian brand). I think I recall sometime in the past GPU's had a 'maximum' resolution they could handle but not sure how to find it out, and can't seem to see it on the AMD's website for the GPU either, although it is possible that I missed it.

So wondering, does anyone have any ideas as to why the monitor sometimes just switches it self of randomly ? Been a month or so since last then had it happen this weekend again so here I am, humbly asking for any and all advice you monitor guru's have ! :o :D

And yes, I'm going to switch the cables and see if it still happens, incase it is just a faulty cable. Still curious if anyone else knows anything about this issue though, or that can come with other inputs. :)

Hi, Mines not switched off though randomly. My 43 also always seems to come online as well.

I am sure the a quickstart Windows mode which you can disable and see if that helps it ?

I do find vesa certified cables DP cables like club3d do work well

Can you disconnect your other monitors for a while to test ?

Tell me about the cable. I found long Displayport cables to be very twitchy. For my Acer Nitro high refresh 4k monitor a 5m copper cable wouldn't work (and 3m was problematic) and I had to switch to fibre-optic.

Considering it have happened a few times when the PC been on for a couple hours, would the quickstart mode actually be part of the problem ?

I guess I could but considering it been about a month between the last two occasions, I'm not really wanting to just use one screen for that long period of time on the off chance it might or might not happen. :o

The cable I had was a 3 meter delcato cable, now switched it to a 5 meter (Goobay) that was connected to my right side monitor, which is furthest away from the PC hence the length (Both cables 1.4 DP). The 3 meter is now drawn across underneath my desk and just about reaching to the right side monitor, with a little bit of slack if I feel the need to raise the desk.

I'll switched the cables this morning so will see how things works out but incase I might need, you got a link to said fibre-optic cable you using ??

I purchased from Amazon. The names of the suppliers change frequently but the cables are £70+ for a 10m DisplayPort fibre-optic cable. I paid over twice that a year ago.

Edit: here's my original thread.
