At what age did you know what you wanted to do for a living?

knocking on 23 and still havnt a clue what id want to do never have done!!
I enjoy teaching and would do a PGCE but i cant afford to leave work to take up uni to get the degree needed to get taken up for it!...
Anyways see how things plan out......

Thought about it since the age of 24-25, but didn't think it was possible, now 26 and have gone for it. Getting a Doctorate degree in Physical Therapy.

Thread bump, but I may have a direction in what I want to do! I'm interested in meteorology, but have no idea what's out there in terms of jobs, or anything related to it.

Any comments? :)

From what I've seen, especially if you wanted to get into the prediction side of things, being poo-hot at maths is pretty much essentially.

Dude, speak to a lecturer in the field. E-mail the head of Earth Sciences, etc. they're always willing to help.

35 and I'm still not sure It might be a bit late for me now. I've 15 months left to figure something out as all my kids will be in full time education and that means full time work for me :(

22, just back from an exchange year and more clueless than ever. What kind of IT jobs (Computer science degree) will not involve sitting on your butt all day? I've looked at teaching for numerous reasons but one that stands out is not sitting on my arse!

Think I could get involved in a business/IT hybrid role but I really dont know whats out there

Couldn't disagree more, doing what you love at the behest of bosses makes you grow to hate it. Do stuff that you know in a similar field. It's much more rewarding, you can still apply your knowledge and skills but doesn't feel like a chore when you get home and fancy doing some code.

Ridiculous.

If it's something you really are passionate about and do enjoy, then you won't grow to hate it.

I love design, I can't see myself not ever loving design, I completely immerse myself within it and I can't see that changing at all - no matter who I work under, nor do I intend to work under anyone anyway.

So to echo:

Find something you enjoy, and do it, don't hold back.

EDIT: Plus, generally the bosses that make you 'hate' what you once enjoyed, are the bosses that hate what they do and do it just for the money, like several people out there and decide to spread their hate for it.

A large sign to jump ship from that person..

Yeh I've read a few case studies of people working at the met office and similar, most did degrees in Maths or Physics, and a Phd in Meteorology :/

I've always 'known' I wanted a job in IT. At age 11 I got my first HTML book and loved the idea of making websites. From this I got interested in graphics. From gaming I got interested in video editing for frag movies and 3d modeling for maps. And to play the games I wanted... I looked into building my own PC, which got me into hardware, which progressed into networking. But none of those things I had put a lot of time into learning how to do gave me the same feeling that programming did at age 16 when I got introduced into my first programming language, VB6. At that exact moment I knew for sure I wanted to be a software developer, ever since that moment I've been hooked.

But who knows... I may change my mind in the future; I wouldn't mind if i did... it would be another adventure :D (well it would suck if I suddenly disliked programming...)

/life story

Ever since I was about 4 years old.

I made that out of old bog rolls, cornflake boxes and tin foil.

Robots & design are my thing.

I now do this http://www.botbuilder.co.uk & allot of design consultancy work.

Awesome :-)

Not made my mind up yet, trucking has done for the past 14 years.....:D

I'm 38, I'll probably decide by the time I'm in my mid 60's. ;)

I always loved art and games, so pretty much was always a straight path for me - to make a career in making game or film graphics. I'm almost 20, in uni now so obviously got some way to go still, but I'd say I'm on the right track :)

I'm 42 and I still dont know what I want to do. I might be too old now to do anything if I did. :(

I now know what I wanna do!!!!

Anyone watch Lion Country on tv?? That is what I want to do. I love wildlife and Africa and doing this would be right up my street (not actually my street but you know what I mean).

Ive checked this out and for 2 weeks (altho I'd do it permanently) it will cost £960, imo money well spent!!!!

Now, who will give me *£2000??? Anyone???

* as ill take someone with me.

To be honest I still haven't decided.. I am debating whether to go and do a Student Paramedic Course or stay in Control.

Sooo many things which I would be so passionate about.

I want to be a writer
I want to join the Army
I want to join the police force
I want to be a pilot (military)
I want to travel as a vet (mainly work on the safari's in Africa)
I want to be a doctor
I want to be an architect
I want to be a structural engineer

The problem is..

I can't write a book, I'm never happy with anything I write so throw it away
I'm not particularaly fond of Britains use of the Armed Forces at the moment.
Police force is a possability
Pilot, I don't have 20/20 vision (found out 2 years ago yay me)
I didn't get the grades to be a vet
Same for doctor
I don't have any backing for an architect
Same for engineer.

Life is looking grim already. Oh and I'm 18...some of you may think I have time, but to me I already feel like I'm in a dead end!

At 12 I knew what I wanted to do.
At 18 I was doing it.
At 40 I'm still in that industry, want to get out, and haven;t a clue what I want t o do next.
