At what point do you say GPU's are too expensive and refuse to buy?

I have definitely saved money compared to my more social family and friends by staying in playing games. I would have probably still done that though even if I had a cheap computer.:D
I just reconditioned an old cheap Latitude 5175 tablet into a Home Assistant touch display and had loads of fun doing that project. I enjoy playing with the new hardware and testing it just as much as playing games. It's fun to be involved in new hardware discussion as well.

I spent £700 on my 7900XT about 18 months ago, by far the most I've ever spent on a GPU (most before was either my 1070, which came with a free PSU, or my 3060ti FE).
I wouldn't want to go much higher but would go a bit higher if it made a significant difference to a game I really wanted to play - My main game is Ark Survival Ascended, which runs acceptably well on my current card after some patching (was a bit marginal before).
I can't imagine much compelling me to upgrade again for a couple of years yet (GTA6 most likely)

Yeh GTA 6 might be the only thing I consider upgrading for.....but that's a long way off for PC, and I'll likely buy a ps5 pro temporarily to play it, and then sell it after a year or so.

I've never spent more than £300 on a GPU previously, though admittedly it's roughly a decade since I last bought one.
I'd probably spend £500 nowadays, or £600 max if it's better value (e.g. 7900XT was worse value than 7900XTX at launch) or better cooler.
But I'd first need to feel the performance is worthwhile, i.e. 120+fps at 1440p or 90+ fps at 4k.

Besides terrible GPU pricing, the other reason for not buying a GPU is due to not really playing games much these days.
Admittedly the new Monster Hunter is coming out and there's no point playing an unrendered polygon slideshow.
It all comes down to what is available at 7900XT+ level at £500 or less, in the next few months.

I went from 2x £200 used GTX 970s in SLI, to a new £400 1070 Ti, to a £400 5700 XT, so historically around the £400 mark.

Problem was I was pushing UW 1440p, and all the above struggled to varying degrees. The next tier up always seemed exorbitant from a value perspective (laughable now).

Post COVID and the end of the GPU drought, I went for a 7900 XT with its 252% of the performance of the 5700 XT and 250% of the VRAM for £750 + interest. The only way I stomached it was through a payment plan.

Thankfully its long been paid off and I don't have buyer's remorse. This card still handles the high resolutions I want it to amazingly well, when my older cheaper cards were always struggling to keep up. But then I was an early adopter of 3440x1440 back to 2014, when wanting GPUs to handle that res was a helluva an ask.

Looks like I'm going to be safe from buyer's remorse for another generation. If I want the equivalent uplift I got from the 5700 XT -> 7900 XT, I'd need a GPU with 125% of the performance of the 5090 and 50 GB of VRAM

Spent £1400 on a 4090 early last year it's pretty much my limit.

I was looking forward to the 5090 but its just not worth it at it's price point for the increase you gain.
I'll wait for the 60 series for my next upgrade.

The most I ever spent was £469 on the 3070FE but I tried my best to get the 3080 it was just super hard to get one for anywhere near RRP and once you got one FE you couldn't buy another.

The closer we get to the 30th the higher my spending cap is going. :p
