At what point do you say GPU's are too expensive and refuse to buy?

Around the £400-450 mark then? Or is this your last hurrah with PC gaming and then giving up?
No idea given the current state of the market I'll wait and see how much the 9070xt is and relative performance/£ works out. I'm likely to have a £600 maximum, any more seems crazy to me for a mid range card.

This, AMD 100% Needs to match 4090 perf with 24gb ram for £800 say, £600 for next step down - then they will take the market by storm.

Some great replies here, glad to see some sensible people around !

The ONLY WAY a 5090 is worth £2k+ in early 2025 is if it did NATIVE rendering at the frame rates it pulls with x4 DLSS on - for that money id want to see cyber punk absolutely maxed out, 4k, 240fps + otherwise get the hell out out & stop ripping people off.
Makes me wonder how much the people that are paying £2,500 for a 5090 earn

Loads of people are struggling these days with all the crazy high price increases going on in the world so am guessing the 5090 buyers are on huge wages not like an average earner

pcs seemed to be becoming almost mainstream at one point about 20 years ago, now they are crazy expensive for a gaming setup

people were building pcs for the same price as a console etc and they were kinda mid range almost

Well, yes. Or are otherwise ‘financially stable’.

Dropping >£2k on what is effectively a ‘toy’ would be reckless if you have other more pressing wellbeing / family needs.

Nah I still wouldn't buy a 5090 even if I was in full time well paid employement.
Then again i spent 14.5k on buying motorcycle to ride about 2000miles per year only mainly when it sunny
Plus the 2k odd of stuff to go with it like helmet, gloves, jackets, luggage, mods, etc :o

If you no waste that hard earned cash on an over priced GPU then there always something else to waste it on ;)

For myself i no have this kind of income to waste anymore as i used to work 60 hours every week, But am now only doing about 42 hours most weeks

As with most financial matters, outgoings are more important than income. Plus, your priorities. In the grand scheme of things, PCs are still cheap entertainment, even at the high-end. How long does it take to burn thorough 2K if you going out clubbing in London every weekend? Not long. Not as long as you're top-end GPU is likely to last you anyway. A nice foreign holiday can cost that much, and more. What about if you're a classic car enthusiast? Or horses? Or women?! lol It's all relative. Not just on income, but on other costs and priorities.

Land Rover are opening new bespoke paint plants so buyers can match the colour of their car to their private jet and yacht.

I wonder if they have a 5090 option too.

Oh for the days of paying £100 for an 256mb x800 , we must have been less demanding then or I guess didnt know any better

I want to wait but I don't the 6000 series will be such great value for money to make the wait worthwhile. My mum passed away last year from cancer, just 6 months after her diagnosis. I feel urgency with my time now. Nothing will get easier as I age, whether that be exercising or sat down playing games!

Yes - this forums demographic is a lot of middle aged older white blokes though, which traditionally due to the way our society is setup tend to earn above average to say the least. It's clear from a few known forum members they are on CONSIDERABLY more than most - but often their posts show having money doesn't often correlate with a high intelligence ;) They just got lucky......sadly a fair fews 'world view' just isn't realistic & they think life is easy for everyone, just like theirs is.

Rant over ;)

Full disclosure I am one of these older dudes who COULD buy a 5090, but I absolutely sure as hell won't because its obviously not worth anywhere near that.

I paid £450 for my 5700XT oct 2019 and now looking to upgrade, have my eyes on 7900XT for around £600. I dont need/want the latest or greatest and certainly not at the prices we have recently seen 1k+ just seems absurd to me. I cant see the new AMD cards matching the outgoing price surely it has to be more if performace is equal or better.
