Anything but the 9800GX2. it has some raw grunt, but relies on SLI, needs a lot of power, and runs very hot.

It will not last much more than a year due to the simple fact that heat kills silicon. the 5850 is the best card in your budget range. It's powerful, consumes less power and will have warranty.

If you seriously cannot stretch to the 5850, then the 5830 is the best bet.

If you cannot stretch to that, then i'd save up until you can. The 5770 isn't a wise move atm in my opinion, its very overpriced considering its relative performance. The reason its price has stuck is becuase of its former reputation as a good card, and the fact there is not much competetition from nvidia below this price mark.

raw grunt and 1 years sounds pure brilliant to me, becuase as games become more developed i will want to upgrade and if my gpu goes pop then i have a perfect excuse.
i aint worried just as long as it lasts a year but i still think the 9800gx2 is better for me

If it's really what you want then no one can force you to buy another card.

But i'm warning you now, the PSU will not cope well at all with it. Many others have already pointed this out. Its not just "oh noes the psu wont handle it becuase its icute etc etc"

We're saying it becuase the rated efficiency and voltages that psu can provide will not meet the demand of an overclocked zosma and 9800GX2.

Something will have to give, and that *something* - lets hope - will just be your PSU. But that will be the best case scenario.

I really doubt the 9800GX2 would only last a year... the weakest component on the board is mean failure rated for 5000 hours @ 80C and doesn't normally get that warm - the cores are something like 15K hours @ 80C.

psu's like myne have been stressed on 2 dual gpu ati cards taht can spike over 800w and they have been stres tested like this, and if my psu does go pop fingers crossed it takes nothing with it

Don't bother guys, this chap makes his mind up about stuff then comes on here to have his ideas affirmed. When that don't happen he ignores advice...

ZZZAC, seriously, a 9800GX2 is not the answer. It's old hat. A single second hand 5850 would be an infinitely better choice (IMO) and the one on OCUK for £108 new is pretty damn good too.

Anyway, I hope it all works out for you

Your a mad man playing with fire and spending money in two generations old tech.

Get a 5770 and a better psu, it really isnt worth the risk .

"hey guys i upgraded my psu with a 9800GX2 but my psu blew it to shreds. "

Dont be stupid, think about these things. a dead psu and loads of scrap junk. or a good psu and a working pc .

I'm glad other people think so :p

5830 has gotta be the best deal on OcUK for under a ton.

If you want to go Nvidia I found a good deal on an ASUS 460 768MB for £86.69 (plus Shipping fees of £8.70) from a respectable e-tailor.

This would be an arguably better purchase, especially seeing as you're only running at a low res.

EDIT: 460 is quite a bit faster than the 5830 generally see here for Anandtech benchmarks.

He is 14 and thinks going nvidia 9800gx2 will make him look good. Ohh look guys i have a dual gpu and ohh boy its NVIDIA. You want advice and have been given sound advice but you already had your mind made up on the wrong card.

The 6850 is not a bad option if you can stretch to that as it has low power requirements and overclocks well. The 5850 is a great deal also. just so you know the 9800gx2 is only dx10 and all the other cards being mentioned are dx11 which is another selling point for any card you have mentioned bar the gx2.

Coupes suggestion above is also a pretty good one.

All im trying to say is the gx2 looks like it will fit my computer more, and all the ati cards alike seem to look fairly small and puny comparing, and ive been told the gx2 is a lighty faster card. Yes i will game, but not much, as i go to school, and do other pc work and after that socailise with freinds, it just seems more agressive, and the same sorta ish speeds, for £20 cheeper.
any other suggestions for a gpu? i may just take my money to the second hand shop in exeter, and see what they have in, becuase they usaly have some pretty nice cards going cheep there

Ridiculous comment.

dx10 cards wont play dx11 games right? becuase ill obv wanna play new releases sooo....

No it wont because it is old tech. That is why it is bigger.

You have been told the answer from people that actually know about things, unlike yourself.

5830 or 5850.

okay, insult me for trying to leanr and ask questions?
i asked for help, but at the end of the day its my choice to make :P
