** ATI 7970 NOW IN STOCK & AVAILABLE!! **

I dont blame anyone 'cashing in' with the initial release of new cards and at the end of the day its only the eejits, must haves and people with more money than sense that pay up. The rest of us will have to wait for sensible pricing to return.:p

Wish I was an eejit, must have or filthy rich.:(

why are you guys claiming this is a rip off? the cheapest 7970 is cheaper and faster than the cheapest 3GB GTX 580

^^This, NVidia fanboys are butthurt :p

Some go with what's best when they're due upgrades, some just stick to their chosen make, fanboy styleee. If Keplar was out now and performed better than 7970, I would have bought that.
Nvidia have got their timing wrong imo and are late to the January party.

Cheapest GTX 580 is currently £359.99, considering the performance increase of the 7970 I'd say £420 is pretty reasonable for the cheapest card.

Don't forget that the GTX 580 at £359.99 is only 1.5GB, the cheapest 3GB GTX 580 is £439.99, so that would make it an even better deal...

any chance you could answer my questions re WC block? I think you are the right person to ask :)
Thanks

What block is it? All of the decent blocks should fit. AMD usually sticks with the 72mm diagonal spacing between the holes on their high end cards. My XSPC Rasa fits my GTX 480 and the core on that is huge.

Im struggling with the "rip off" argument here...

These are expensive - but they are the performance kings and they are - as pointed out - cheaper than the 3GB Nvidia equivalent.

Thought I would paste the wiki definition of a "rip off"

"A ripoff (or rip-off) is a bad financial transaction. Usually it refers to an incident in which a person overpays for something. A ripoff is distinguished from a scam in that a scam involves wrongdoing such as fraud; whether or not something is a ripoff, on the other hand, is a matter of opinion."

I am struggling to see how this card @ 420 falls into the above category.

ridiculous pricing. Especially when you look at OC's gaming system base prices and about 4 or 5 of OCUK's gaming PC's within same price range of a 7970!

At the end of the day do you really need one of those for this years games ?

IMHO. No.

Even at £420 it's not cheaper than the price of a 3GB 580GTX if you shop around just a little bit.

I am a bit of a fan boy for nVidia cards but I must admit that £420 for the cheapest card is pretty damn impressive. The GTX480 when it was first launched was £450 or more and this new ATi is miles more powerful.

Stoner81.

PS - I won't be buying one but I game at 1920x1080 on my GTX480 and play everything maxed out so won't be upgrading for another year at least.

For single screen gaming, you're absolutely right. For multi-screen gaming, then these come into their own. I am seriously considering upgrading my 5870's for this little puppy which will actually enable me to run higher settings at 5760x1080 than I can currently.

Yeah the 420 card is a great deal and I'd have thought a £30 mark up on branded would be fair considering they are all reference. £100 or more for some of them is crazy.

Even for single screen gaming at 2560 x 1600 I'd consider one of these if I had the cash...

I don't really get the massive differences in price between brands considering I thought these initial cards were essentially the same?

I wanted an ASUS, MSI, Sapphire or Gigabyte over a 'lesser' branded one but no way am I paying £500 for one, nor do I want to spend £420 on a non-branded one. £450 for a decnt branded one was my sweetspot to tempt me.

I think I'll sit and wait a few weeks.

Remember when 5870 was 330, pound was about 2:1 to the dollar

Now its about 1.5:1

So

330 x 25% = 412.5 - £8 more for the cheapest 7 series.

So pretty spot on really, its the exchange rate IMO not AMD's pricing.

No it wasn't it was 1.62$

Maybe in ocuk land yeah but around the Web the cheapest 580 3gb is a good 40 quid cheaper than the pre order price. But it is the faster card though.
