ATI cuts 6950 allocation

Depends on the game, I've seen it 30% faster in one title and 40% faster in a benchmark, overall it looks to be anything from 15%-30% faster on average.

Turns out I was right, 15% on average when 30% ahead of GTX580 in Crysis. Simple maths does miracles :D

Lets hope it will drop to £349 soon after launch and I'll get my hands on one of these.

BTW, if it beats HD5970 then it's a very much step up by AMD. Not a refresh at all.

I have to agree with DM on the ram size, 2GB is for the ePeen :)

Hell, I get away with just 768mb (SLi'd 460s) at a resolution of 2560*1600! Fair enough I don't implement AA at those settings, but I haven't had a problem yet. I'll be picking up a pair of 6950's if they're not cut down too much

try 5760x1080 ;)

1gb chokes.

not as big as the market for AA! i love cranking the AA right the way up. at 32x AA in bfbc2 and 16x anisotropic and it looks teh dogs danglies

How big is the market for that res? ;)

Much bigger than it was a year ago ;)

its still a niche, but it is widely spreading with people playing air, car and such games and sims, and world of warcraft and MMOG also as a crowd getting there.

I enjoiy it immensly.:D

To be honest 1GB will also choke with 2560x1440 or 2560x1600 which is much more common but still rare.

I am sure they will release a 2GB version of the 6850 to sit in the middle.
i can say 5870 1GB chocked pretty much all the time at 2560x1440. turn off AA and turn down texture settings restored made all games to playable stutter-free state.

6950 should have been 2GB. AMD missed a trick here.

I guess they want something to differentiate them. If a 6950 can be overclocked to 6970 speeds, which it probably can be, they still want to keep a reason to buy the more expensive card.

Apparently they are also launching 2GB 6950 versions.

I think we are no were near the limits of todays cards at current standard resolutions.

I have to agree with Barzini here...

1Gb may be sufficient for "standard" resolutions, but if the two companies are going to continue to offer multi-screen gaming, they need to provide at least one card with enough memory to make this viable.

The top-end card really need to have at least 2Gb (or have a variant with at least 2Gb). I'm hoping that Kepler / Southern Islands will have an option for at least 3Gb memory (assuming they use a 384bit memory interface).
