If recent rumors are true for 6970/50 - 1536/1408 SP-th at frequencies 880/800MHz, the difference between the two cards will be no more than 20%, probably around 10-15%.
However, the price will be crucial if it is good compared to productivity and that of competitors nVidiya, the allegations of Gibbo OCUK, it will sell like hot cakes and launch them will probably be better than the 5800 series may prove correct. All expect AMD to be aggressive in their pricing so that consumers and fans to be happy with good competition and lower prices.

, guys Cayman HD6970-XT is ~30% faster than HD5870 and ~20% slower than 580GTX , those are real numbers and saw with my own eyes the benchmarks and clocks and the whole thing , and sorry i cannot tell you more , just believe what im saying its nothing but the truth and i have no need to lie ,im dissapointed in what i just saw

hw much is gtx 580 faster than hd 5870?
 
I agree if the price reflects the performance difference to the GTX580 I dont care.

ATI - Single card can support 3+ monitors
Nvidia - Single card can support 2 monitors

That one fact just kills Nvidia for me, its why I will never buy a GTX580 :(
 
the thing i keep asking myself is
why would magicroundabout and raven both say what they said about info from their sources
