Attention emo's

What is this "cutting themselves" and "weeping in the dark" stuff all about? Do girls really go for that kind of lad? I would have thought that such behaviour would turn the majority of girls right off.
I'm afraid they do, I would love to know the psychology of it.

Emo's are pretty awful as are the chav/spice boy brigades as well I mean aren't emos supposed to be non-conformist types just like goths etc when at the end of the day they all look the same is that not conformity ( could be wrongly spelt ), I find that very funny I mean I would class myself as a metal fan but I don't dress like them, many's a goth/metal type have classed me as dressing kind of like a chav but when I can sit and talk metal/rock bands with them they see what I really am like, so very strange

Hmmm. I have a photo I took with my old camera phone of a shell truck coming out of the Buncefield depot before the big fire. The back of the tanker said "EMO OIL".
If i can get the picture off my phone (E700 - royal pain in the proverbial) I'll post it up.
I am now thinking that Buncefield was the result of concentrated Emos in the vicinity of flammable fluids.....

Why dont you label yourself? Are you above labels?

In my experience, lots of real emos do cut themselves...and the fakes, of whom there are MANY, claim they do....

and the whole weeping in the dark thing.

Above labels?

I just personally don't label myself. I don't want a name to myself. I have a fringe haircut because i wanted a new hairstyle and so to some i am considered an emo. I like the 'typical' emo bands. My clothes range from Firetrap t-***** to Soviet jeans, not pipeliner jeans.

Agree about the number of fakes around and with new genres of 'emo' becoming popular, you get a variety of emos. For example, the current most popular band in this new wave of scene emo is Fall Out Boy, making way for other bands such as Panic! At The Disco and The Academy Is.... You then have bands such as UnderOath and Still Remains, screamo. Another 'section' of the emo music style are bands such as My Chemical Romance, basically the first in this new sound. A slower beat than screamo but not as softcore as Fall Out Boy. Many people have seen the images of Aiden and AFI as they have been posted in General Discussion before, these sort of bands can be labelled as goth punk - you may need to listen to each of the bands listed to understand the difference.

Where was that generalisation made? Or is it a common assumption about Emos? Either way, if I was a teenager again, I still wouldn't care less what people assumed about me. I'll never really understand why you would let it bother you.

I personally don't believe that all emos generate the body language and image "pick on me, punch me and hurt me, I am pathetic". I don't deny it isn't a trend. The majority of emos have the sweeping fringe and tight clothes yes, that is true but i disagree that they all generate the same body language and image. Sure some emos may be like the ones in stereotypical images like the thread starter's poster but others are not. They laugh and have no cuts on their arms or whatever.

Ok I am slowly coming to realise that I don't know very much about Emos at all. I thought they were just wimpy kids who lacked self confidence on the whole.

What is this "cutting themselves" and "weeping in the dark" stuff all about? Do girls really go for that kind of lad? I would have thought that such behaviour would turn the majority of girls right off.

"Oh my boyfriend is so introspective and morose".
"Wow you're so lucky to have such a miserable boyfriend".
"I know, sometimes I could just kill myself with joy".

Kids - you are only young for a really short time, have fun, laugh, joke, smile and don't waste it being pointless. If you think being a teen is difficult then you're going to hate having responsibilities to more than your peer group and wardrobe.

You thought they were just wimpy kids who lacked self confidence on the whole? This is what i dislike, people judging on that kind of scale.

As for the cutting and all of that, most of it is myth and made up to go along with the stereotyping. "They dye their hair black, listen to angry music, i bet they cut themselves!".

I don't think that anyone has said that ALL emos generate that body language (note the position of the "that" and the "all").

I might go Emo spotting at the weekend and photograph some to see if I can find an Emo with confident body language. Some don't have cuts on their arms? Why do ANY have self inflicted cuts on their arms. Isn't that all just a little bit pretentious and pathetic? Why is it "trendy" to do it now but not 20 years ago, what has changed in the teenage psyche? *calls CBS in*.

Maybe it's just the fact that a lot of people would like to pick on them and punch them. Because they look so pathetic.

Why dont you want to name yourself? Its perfectly normal to do so..

Im thinking more of the fans than the bands..

The stereotype comes from the lyrics...Very depressing and dark and often some self destructive stuff..thats where its from..

Most emos are skinny as hell and its accentuated by the tight as hell trousers and shirts..the long fringes contribute to the image of being a pushover..covering the face, it seems like theyre covering up..

Why do you dislike it? Its accurate...MOST, not all...Most emos are wimpy kids with low self confidence...If you are actually an emo, are you invoved in the scene? If so, you must have seen this...

How do you personally define confident body language? I mean, do you expect emos to run around shouting, smiling and laughing? If so, most do. Shocking.

Anyone can have cuts on their arms whether they be an emo or not. You don't need to be emo to be depressive. You don't need to be dressed in black and listen to depressing music about killing yourself to want to cut yourself.

Pft. As for the trend question, i don't know the answer. I do know the answer about some of the dress style, i need to dig out one of my Kerrang! magazines and find the article but a certain band started wearing ties and suits when playing gigs. This is because they got judged in what they wore and so decided to wear smart suits when playing..i think i remembered that right. :o

Panic! At The Disco. A softcore 'emo' band who have a style like Fall Out Boy, happy.

Hey calm down sonny. As I said earlier I don't know much about them, only what I have read here. When I see someone dressed like an "emo" walking down the highstreet looking self pitying and lacking in confidence, almost wincing at the hint of attracting attention then i'll judge that person as I have seen them. If the vast majority of kids that I see dressed that way exhibit that type of body language then I'll assume that in general that is how they are.
Get over it, people generalise, it's a fact of life and a natural instinct.

Just look at them though... "Ohhh look at me i'm wearing a shirt and tie". Is that meant to be making a statment?
If their so happy then how come not one of them is smiling?

Body language is a vast area and apparently something like 80% of our communication is via body language. It is instinctive, so a confident person exhibits confident body language instinctively and other people instinctively recognise it. I can no more easily define that than define how something tastes good.
