A 2011 E92 335i is much much less despite being the same price new.
E92 - so you're comparing the cost of a previous generation car. Pretty obvious why it's cheaper really :)
My old 2005 laptop is cheaper than used 2011 models - despite being the same price when new :p

Has the S5 been updated since 2011? I suspect not? Or if it has, it'll be little more than a facelift as far as I can (or more appropriately, cannot) tell. So in fact, they are of a similar generation, rather than a previous generation.

What?

The S5 is of the same generation as the E92 - it just hasn't been replaced yet whereas the E92 has. The 2011 A5 is a facelift of the 2007 model.

In 2011 both the E92 and A5 were facelifted models of cars introduced in 2006 and 2007 respectively.

There may only be 2 years difference between the E92 (2005) and the Audi S5 (2007) but in realality the difference between them in terms of interior quality and refinement is huge.
This is obvious when you look at the F30 as it is on the same level as the 2007 /2012 facelift A5.

Seems the market also agrees, as you pointed out, the E92 335i is considerably cheaper than a 'same generation' S5 and used F30 335i's are priced similarly to a used S5's.

Sit in an E92 and an A5 and the difference is night and day!!!

That's not the reality at all, I have driven both (and bought the one I felt was best) but I don't think we should dwell on that in the Audi thread :p

The market is rarely rational.

I'm not doubting the E92 drives better than an A4/A5. Everything visual though is vastly better on the A5.

When Audi release the new A4/A5, BMW will be very close to launching a new 3 Series. So, BMW will have had 3 new generation cars in the same period as Audi having two model generations.

I know Audi have been slow at releasing new models but it shows that BMW are/have been playing catch up.

Its the other way round. The E46 was 2 years before the B6 A4, the E90 was a few years ahead of the B8 and now the F30 is a few years before the new A4 due very soon.

The new A4 is due next year about the same time that the LCI on the 3 series is due. By that count the 2 are pretty much aligned from a facelift/new model prospective, as the current 3 was released in 2012 around the time the facelift on the current A4 occurred and the reverse is about to happen next year.

This.

I picked up my B8.5 just as it was released, around 4-6 months before the F30 release.

I would also say it is Audi playing catch up to BMW. I would say the E9x was of a similar vein to the B8 in the A4. Now don't get me wrong, I am truely and Audi fan. IF they could put a diesel engine with similar performance (power & economy) as the BMW counterpart, I would likely prefer the Audi. That being said, I did much prefer the whole interior my F11 over the A6 I also looked at before deciding on the F11.

But in essence, I am an Audi fan, as can be evidenced from this picture from a couple years back :

And if I was looking for a petrol engined motor, I would be FAR more inclined to buy an Audi over a BMW (thinking specifically of the S4 with the 3.0 Supercharged engine).

That's where I am. Finding a decent petrol BMW is near impossible, thank you Audi for having a specific petrol model !!

I'd have thought the petrol Audi's are just as impossible if not more so to find? For example in the A6 they now don't even offer a big petrol below the V8 in the S6!

There are about 20-25 S4 avant listed on a mix of pre and post facelift and quite a few s5 sport backs.

Like I said above, having one model which is only available in petrol means there is more choice.
As BMW offer the x35 in both fuels 99% of people go for the diesel option :(

The are currently 230 used S5's to browse :)

Well 34 sportbacks AUC which is what you'd need to to get the access your wanting...

SDK are you sure you would want one at this late stage in its life? Especially coming from several years in current gen BMW kit. it's going to feel like an older and more dated car for sure, even trivial things like how the instrument cluster looks and the resolution of the navigation display etc betray it's age.

The new one is just around the corner - if you are intent on spending large money on one then surely it makes sense to hang on as long as you possibly can and try and get into the all-new model which will be bang up to date?

After 8 months now in a current gen BMW I can't see how I'd ever be happy to go backwards irrespective of how good the package might be otherwise.

I suspect the S3 Sportback won't offer the space you need but have a look at it, it's an all-new platform and much more fresh than the S5.

The obvious answer if you want an Audi would be an A6 3.0T S-Line Avant with 8 speed ZF box. Except they don't offer it. Sigh.

Doesnt SDK have the 1 series though? All the ones ive driven have fel good to drive, but fairly ordinary in terms of Tech and interior quality/feel.

But yeah even if you do want a current gen A4/A5 wait a few months for the new ones to appear, which will lower the values further on the current gen. I still think the FL A4 with XENON looks better than the current BMW :O

I do have to agree with Fox there. Having come from a BMW (my 335d, which even whilst it wasn't the current generation, was still nice), I felt it was a backwards step in switching to the A6 / A4. Which is why I ended up in the F11.

I would be trying to hold off for the new S4 / S5. It should be bang up to date.

And yes, the 3.0T A6 Avant 8 speed would be the car to have, if it was ever made.
