Audi owners in here!

It's a CVT, IMHO it's really unpleasant. I've no idea why Audi decide to ruin the A6 range by insisting that only people who buy the 300bhp BiTurbo TDI or the petrol hybrid can have a proper gearbox. It's just bizarre, it's a large executive car and is IMHO suited to neither a CVT nor a DSG.

This sort of odd choice probably contributes to the fact that the A6 is cheaper on the used market than its main competition. Which I guess its a bonus for used buyers.

The ZF8HP is rear drive applications only, whilst the new ZF9 is a front drive box it is for transverse engines and so won't fit the longitudinal engine in an Audi.

I suspect that the 3.0 BiTurbo is 4 wheel drive only so the rear drive only box can then feed the transfer box which sends drive forward. On cars which have a front drive only option this cannot be done so instead of offering two different gearbox options for a given engine they use one of their own boxes which does have front drive capability.

What are the feelings on Audi Multronic?

I'm not sure if I want an A4 or an A6 but I've seen an A6 Avant 2.0TDI Multitronic 2013 Black Edition. Looking at either the 2.0 or 3.0 and I want the one with all the bells and whistles on the inside (I don't know the term but the ones with the little wheel by the gear stick)

Hardly any have manual gearbox (don't even know if you can get them on the 3.0s) so was wandering what the multitronic is like day to day. They've got the paddles on the wheel but is that a bit of a gimmick or do you feel you are actually changing gear?

I have 3.0TDI CVT and love it - smooth and responsive - also averaging 45mpg on a "normal run" which I think is great on a ~7 seconds 0-60 car

After 30 miles of 50mph limit motorway roadworks and 35 mikes if "motorway speeds" on the way home tonight it was just a tad under 55mpg

It can quite easily average low double figures if you want it to bit then getting the chance to do that on mist daily drives are few and far between

But the product suffers as a result - it's a premium executive saloon, you could argue it shouldn't be front drive at all but that horse has bolted, but when the low cost front drive platform then results in compromised transmission choices as well it really does make the product suffer.

Perhaps this contributes to why the A6 appears to represent good value on the used market whereas the 5 Series is if anything over priced used.

Audi's oil-guzzling issues
Company response
Audi said:
Audi UK is committed to investigating and swiftly resolving any technical issues relating to our cars which are reported to us through our network.

As we have stated previously, a low percentage of older 2.0 TFSI engines fitted to certain models have been exceeding the factory oil consumption tolerance of 0.5 litres per 1,000 kilometres (approx. 620 miles). Changes were made to the production tolerances of the pistons and rings in this engine from mid-2011 onwards, and customers with 2.0 TFSI cars produced after this date should not have any cause for concern.

The comprehensive Audi UK Warranty (3 years/60,000 miles) covering all new Audi vehicles has already resolved the majority of these cases at no cost to the customer. For remaining affected customers with cars that are no longer covered by this warranty, we have a policy in place to resolve issues on a case-by-case basis. This revised policy has been in force nationally since the beginning of the year and applies to new and retrospective cases. Qualification criteria are applied in each individual case to confirm that the vehicle has been serviced in accordance with the owner’s handbook by an Audi Centre or other professional workshop which follows the Audi Service quality standards.

We invite all Audi customers who have any questions or concerns relating to newly discovered or previously reported oil consumption with 2.0 TFSI engines to contact their local Audi Centre. Alternatively, our advisors will be available until 10pm on Thursday 4 June, and thereafter from 8am to 8pm, by calling 0800 093 0110 free of charge from landlines*.

*Chargeable from mobile phones.

Grr, looks like the only cable that will talk to the S6's diagnostic port is the HEX+CAN one. Anyone know a good (cheaper) place to buy one? Or even have one not of use any more?

I need one at some point to get the satnav DVD out...

There will likely be someone in your area that will have the genuine cable, and will do what you need for beer monies. There are a couple guys up here I know who will do stuff for nothing, for example.

When I was on uk-mkivs.net they had a list of who had the cables, and where they were from. You could then just find someone local and contact them. I'm sure other sites will have similar lists. You could try Audi-sport.net.

yip audi-sport.net has a vcds user map so should be fairly easy to find someone local to you.

ive got a cheap cable which reads the newer cars and lets me use the full version I got it through a mate a while back when I was changing my ecu and ive never had a problem with it.

So my rear parking sensors suddenly started working again yesterday after 6 months out of action :p

Glad I didn't spend hundreds trying to repair them at a garage!

Interior is fairly nice, heated seats, Bose. Apart from the ridiculousness of it having BT phone but no A2DP so I had to buy a Tune2Air for £80. That works well though.

As a daily its great, fits dog in and has a biggish boot. Pootles around in auto nice enough, but S-Tronic/DSG is still a little dim witted in town, but I'm splitting hairs.

I'll probably keep it for 6 months then it will be back to the Pork I think, something manual and involving.

UPDATE: Oil Consumption

Just received a phone call from the dealership and they will do the repairs. The net cost to me is £0.00, the goodwill input is from both the dealership and Audi UK. It will take roughly 3 to 4 weeks to complete.

As you probably know (from my previous posts) that 2 of my services were competed outside of Audi garages but they both followed Audi standards and used the correct oils which they confirmed.

So panic over :)

..and they've packed up again. What's normally the cause of failure for these things?
I had the short beep this morning, directly followed by the long one to show a failure.

It's really weird, as all 4 sensors worked on Saturday
