Audi owners in here!

Does Halfords uses official VAG group products? May be able t get around it that way.

Are we not back to the 'you must get it serviced by the main dealer to keep the warranty intact' again?

Will it not be up to Audi to prove that the oil consumption is down to NOT being serviced by Audi?

Oil consumption issue

I have a 2010 A5 2.0 TFSI Black Edition, bought second-hand 2 years ago and it now has 51,000 on the clock.

For the past year, my oil consumption has gone through the roof taking a litre every 360-380 miles and you probably know Audi recommend Castrol 5w-30 which is on average £35 per 4 litres so it has been expensive.

I was surfing the web looking for issues relating to this and to my surprise it seems to be a 'known' problem although not formally recognised in Europe but a Class Action loss for Audi in the States.

I contacted Audi UK and they have been helpful in arranging for the Oil Consumption Test at my local Audi dealer. The car went in last Thursday for the phase 1 test, oil top-up and 600 mile road test they said it should take about a week.

I am concerned that I could be hit with engine rebuild costs as Audi UK don't seem to be consistent who they help or not.

Yip this is the main reason which puts me off getting any 2.0 petrol engine AUDI as it seems to be pot luck. Good luck with dealing with AUDI on this, let us know how you get on.

Probably not what you want to hear but mine took about 3 weeks for Audi to sort out - full rebuild including new cylinder heads and con rods - all at £95/hour Audi labour

Thankfully I was literally a week inside the Warranty and was all done under that (plus a hire car for me while it was in the garage)

The pile of paper on the desk when I did pick it up was probably 10-12 inches thick and the service manager smiled as he patted it and said "now the fun getting Audi to pay for all this!"

As a small concelation I bought mine from a 3rd party garage who had done a service in their own garage and Audi didn't batter an eyelid

Sounds very hit and miss and a bloke I work with is having a mare with them getting his Mrs' car sorted out

Good luck and let us know how you get on :)

Out of interest - do you have a Which? Subscription?

If so you can take advantage of their free legal advice service - the guy I work with is finding it invaluable

I don't but I do have legal costs covered in my car and house insurance not sure if they cover this sort of thing ?

I'll see what the outcome is and maybe a call to BBC Watchdog if Audi won't play ball. I just hope it doesn't get to that stage. I'm sure Audi UK have already rolled the dice and they know what they will do. I have been nothing but polite from my initial email to phones calls.

We'll see which side of the desk they have put me on in the next few days

Can't comment on your legal cover but I will say that the Audi dealership / franchise were fine with me all the way through so it's not always doom and gloom

Best of luck mate and keep up up to date :)

Warranty doesn't come in to it, more just a Audi tend to be more likely to provide goodwill contribution if you service it with them, and then play the "This isn't the sort of thing I expect from a premium brand like Audi" card.

Again nothing to do with it as it's an "unofficially" known issue, probably affected by a number of different things (how the engine was "broken in", types of Journey, how often oil was changed initially etc.) - I'm sure there are enough get out clauses (e.g. even did Halfords use Audi's recommended Oil i.e. Castrol at the last oil change) that getting any contribution will be hard enough.

Thanks guys, I'll keep you in the loop. I'm currently having panic attacks on just the thought it could come to £5,000 plus

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the estimated bill for my A6 2.0TFSI was £4,500.

Sufficed to say I don't have a 2.0TFSI any more :p

My next car is likely to have a 2.0TFSI, but it will be in warranty.

Out of interest what a real world figures on the VAG 280bhp engines? I.e. the one in say the Ibiza Cupra (yes I know this is an Audi thread!) but is a combined of around 40mpg really possible??

No chance in hell. I have a long-term average of 30.2MPG in my Audi S1 which has 50BHP less than the engine you're asking about.

I can just about crack 39MPG on a long trip if I stick to 70mph.

Obviously depends on driving style, road conditions etc, but I would doubt it. I had the 2.0 208 BHP TFSI and was lucky if i got an average of 32-35

I know these guys do the tests in perfect conditions, but how can they really get away pulling them figures to the public?

Don't get me wrong I was really sceptical anyway but after looking at options to change the A4 and lease a car the Cupra Estate would be a nice upgrade and my allowance from work would cover.

I may have got away with a combined 40mpg as my long term average in the A4 2.0tdi is only 46.1mpg but 30mpg may not be classed as 'economical'.

Saying that the managing director classes his A45 as very cheap to run :D

I was trying to look at fast petrol as apposed to diesel but sadly I may just need to go down the route of the car being a 'tool' and change the wifes car to something a bit more interesting when it is due to be changed.

Dunno to be honest. But if your in the market for one, I know of an A3 for sale that is pretty mint...

The time has come to sell my A3, I have owned this car for 5 years, it has been so good I sold it and regretted it so bought it back.
Car is in very good condition and has been pretty much faultless in my ownership. During which time it has had many OEM upgrades which has made the car better spec than standard s-line plus. There are a couple of age related marks on the paint of a minor nature but the car does not look its age and drives very well.
Spec as follows:
Exterior
S-line front bumper, Black optics grill
Xenon headlights, headlight washers
Carbon Fibre B pillars
Privacy Glass
S-line Roof Spoiler
Facelift rear S-line rear bumper c/w diffuser and honeycomb inserts
