Audi owners in here!

I found it the other way around, the Audi felt amazingly grippy on the road (and therefore fun to drive) and poor on the track where as my RWD cars always felt too twitchy to push as hard on the road as the Audi (only maybe 75%) yet were perfect for the track.

Saying that the "feel" on my RWD R34 still, unsurprisingly (estate vs sports car), beats the Audi hands down even though it was slower on the road.

The advantage of 4WD is traction, rarely overall cornering grip. What a good 4WD system does, such as the one on an RS4 is take liberties in any weather when pushing on at slower speeds in particular such as pulling out of slow bends, islands etc. You can plant the throttle and it will mainly sort it out, RWD either becomes a flashing TC nightmare or needs real skill to get the pace from it when the roads get slippy but for me that is much more fun.

I would have told him if he called himself a salesman again I would report him to trading standards and then his HR team for lying about his role!

I imagine he would have followed up that sentence with "... but if you want a car that won't try to kill you, you're better off with an Audi". :p

I think Audi salesmen must not work to commission. When I ordered my S3, he was like "yeah, you probably don't want that option, it's really not worth the money", and "check out the BMW dealership down the road before you make up your mind". Was kinda refreshing to deal with a salesman who was the complete opposite of pushy.

My reasons for going with the Audi: the BMW M135i, which was my other consideration, I think had slightly more power, but I not enough that I noticed. With options, the price was similar enough for me to not notice. It came down to the fact that the Audi looked nice; the BMW looked ugly as sin, by comparison. And the 4WD was a nice bonus, seems like it'll be handy come winter.

1 month to go.

Interesting thing I've spotted about the new RS3 today (might be common knowledge, who knows :p).

It has wider front tyres than rears. Are there many other cars on the road that have this setup? I can see why they're doing it, but it does seem a bit odd at first.

From what I can see it's still in the same tax band (189-194 is the same band), but still very weird.

Strange to think a 350+hp car is only putting out 20g/km more CO2 than my focus with 145...

It was an option on the previous RS3 as well to help with understeer and the fact it's not permanent 4WD.

The S3 Saloon really is a great looking car.

I still think the A3 saloon looks superb and the S3 a little more so with the additional visual tweaks. Do think there are far too many of the latter in Sepang blue though - it's become far too "safe" a colour for the S3 already.

Everyone who sees mine comments on it and often asks what it is exactly (it's de-badged) yet I'm actually surprised how few of them I see on the roads.

Yeah, I feel bad for not spending an extra 2 grand for less boot space.

The boot in the saloon is larger :p

Of course you can remove the parcel shelf in the hatch to create a larger load space with the rear seats folded but, if you don't need to move washing machines around, the boot on the saloon is significantly larger than that on the hatch with the shelf in place and the rear seats upright.

Looking to transport a couple of bikes around using my A3 Sportback 5 door.

Recommendations for roofbars etc. Audi, Thule etc.

Thanks in advance :)

My personal recommendation is always a towbar and then a towbar mounted rack that holds by the wheels.

Something like these: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/thule-rideon-9503-3-bike-towball-carrier/

These always secure your bike better, and also are easier to put the bikes on and off - without damage to the car. We used to transport 3 Downhill bikes (40-45lbs each) on these.

I think I might be upsetting some people on Pistonheads :(

Not my intention, just suggesting the new RS3 will be no different to the previous one, a big disappointment if you enjoy driving for drivings sake, rather than just some car that looks, sounds and goes nice.

Cars are expensive, and nobody likes to think they got a bad deal. Especially if they've splashed out on a nice one. Hence, people often take criticism of their car as criticism of themselves, and get quite angry about it. Irrational, but understandable.

I drove one a couple of weeks ago and have to agree. It's a lot of money for what is ultimately an A3 that goes fast. Was somewhat disappointed with it in the end.
