Audi owners in here!

I have to say, regardless of how dull it might be to drive, if it were available in Saloon, for the difference in cost against the S3, I might be tempted.

Mate of mine bought an S3 for his wife and see's it as the most hateful car he has ever driven. He couldn't believe how bad it was and recently we were together and another mate had a Golf R which he lent him. He said he could not believe how 2 cars with pretty much the same platform were so different. I have to agree however that the A3 saloon is a very fine looking little car, head and shoulders above the hatch version in the style stakes.

If I did get one, it would be just a daily drive. The A3 was nice enough to just cruise along in a comfortable cabin, not particularly exciting though.

The A3 hatches don't look bad per se, it's just that 99% of cars on the roads these days are hatchbacks and they all just blend into one shape. It almost doesn't matter what the outside looks like, it's just some hatchback.

I should say I've had nothing but hatchbacks myself until now, just fancied something that looked a bit different.

I think I might be upsetting some people on Pistonheads :(

Not my intention, just suggesting the new RS3 will be no different to the previous one, a big disappointment if you enjoy driving for drivings sake, rather than just some car that looks, sounds and goes nice.

Try your luck on the Audi-Sport.net forum, you'll probably get lynched :D

The number of fanboys on there is ludicrous. They've had massive arguments about why the motoring press generally rate the Golf R over the S3 for driving involvement and how this can't possibly be true as they're basically the same car underneath so the S3 must be at least as good, if not better

Nope, you do not get to make me regret buying an S3 before I even get my hands on it. Nope nope nopety nope.

Truth is, my old car is a Vauxhall Astra that's nearly as old as I am, and probably had about 80 BHP when it was brand new. That could be why I couldn't tell much difference between the S3 and M135i. Don't really care, it's still going to be epic compared to what I have.

Using that logic is dangerous though because the logical conclusion is that you could have saved a fortune and picked a 1.8TFSI and had the same 'wow' effect coming from an 80bhp Astra.

I had no idea you were buying one, but that would not change my view of them. Going to try and drive one this week so I can be more informed if people want to argue about it on PH I should go drive one I feel, the new RS3 I mean. Enjoy your car, don't give a flying **** what other people think if you are happy with it.....well unless you overpaid or bought a doggy.

Nor would I expect it to. I made my choice, and I still think it was the right one for me. If driving connoisseurs think the BMW is more fun, I'm not going to argue, because my experience is limited. From my point of view, there's very little difference except that the Audi isn't hatefully ugly. :p

Wasn't trying to :p

The S3 has a lot going for it and in many ways is superior to a Golf R, it's just the latter has better dynamics. If I were in the market for one or t'other, I'd get the S3 myself but simply because, in the areas which matter to me, it's a better car.

See, I don't even know what that means. Better dynamics. Dynamics just means movement, right? The Golf R is better at moving?

How it feeds back what the car is doing to the driver, this is what people who enjoy driving at pace look for in the best drivers cars. When you hear dynamics think of that.

Then call it feedback. I can understand feedback. And for the record, I thought the S3 was pretty good for it in "dynamic mode".

But as you say you are not best to judge as you don't really know good from bad. Why did Audi call it dynamic mode, surely that should be feedback mode? ;)

I was led to believe that "dynamic" mode actually was "dynamic", ie it changes based on conditions and situation. Like auto mode, but aimed at performance oriented settings only.

Dynamic (throttle response is all I can change on my A4) certainly changed my throttle input by a fair amount!
