Audi owners in here!

What are the A1 TDIs like? I need a daily to replacing my dying 211k 1.9 Polo TDI which is good on fuel but need to change soon, or maybe the newer Polo 1.6TDI

So my vehicle which has had 3 Years Standard and 1 Year Extended warranty taken out has developed an issue 3 days out of warranty. I gave Audi a quick call who said unfortunately they would not be able to look at it unless I would be willing to pay.

I did expect this but a small part of me was hoping under the circumstances there would be some sort of good will gesture.

It was only a quick call due to being at work but I perhaps fancy my odds to try and get them to do something, has anyone been in a similar situation and had any success?

Thinking of getting another Q7, looking at the 55TFSI-E. Don't suppose anyone has driven that engine before?

I haven't driven the hybrid as I have a 50Tdi. However, it only has 5 seats doesn't it? Is that an issue for you? If not, wouldn't a Q8 be better for a 5 seat car?

I'm leasing, and when I spec up a similar Q8, its £400/month more. Also not so keen on the Q8. My previous Q7 I never really used the 3rd row seats, just enjoyed the massive boot!

It depends. I always bought my cars from Crewe Audi (I live in Manchester/Edinburgh/Norwich) and I had them serviced there whenever possible. Over 14 years I had 9 cars I think. Sometimes just the one, sometimes my household was running as many as three. I had an issue on a 4-year PCP with an A6 allroad at three years and seven months with the S-tronic gearbox being a bit jerky. And they wanted something like £3900 to fix it. And I just said “what can you do?” Audi covered 100% of the parts cost and Crewe did the labour at 50%. So it was still £800 but a lot better than £3900. If you have any sort of relationship with them (I was active in the TT Owners Club and I was running a heavily modified TT diesel at the time so they knew me) you should be able to get a bit of goodwill out of it.

This is the reason I do not keep cars outside of the factory warranty, especially German cars with DSG boxes, no chance.

Always amazes me how the lease prices vary. I actually prefer the Q7 to the Q8 in looks and the new interior of the facelift Q7 makes it as nice inside as the Q8.

I would have definitely been happy with that outcome in your position but as you mentioned can only imagine that your loyalty and familiarity with you contributed massively.

That's exactly how I feel but this was one of those moments of... "Should be alright" but to try and avoid any potential repair costs when I bought the car it had Audi Warranty until 27/11/2020 followed by 2 Years of RAC Platinum Plus Warranty (Not that it's always worth the paper it is written on) but this was provided free by the reputable dealership.

Just to give some background, the issues I have are minor but annoying none the less.
  1. The brake pedal when in use developed a loud squeak, crunch to a point where you could feel it in the feed back of the pedal but thinking it was a case of needing lubrication I took it to a long time family friend who is a mechanic at his garage and he diagnosed it to be down to the Brake Servo after lubrication to the pedal it made no difference at all.
  2. Auto Hold is sticking on intermittingly regardless of weather quite aggressively to the point where back end squats down and I catapult away which is problematic in bumper to bumper traffic and has nearly had me re-ended a couple of times. Sometimes the brake pedal goes rock solid when it does it fully to the point where it needs manually switching off.

Now since my original post I have called Audi back, they explained my warranty expired on 27/11/2020 at Midnight therefore I explained the fault started Friday evening which by that point your phone lines are closed and that I called Saturday and was promised a call back which never happened so with servicing closed Sunday I called Monday to explain my fault and got told again warranty has expired which I disputed with having warranty right up until midnight according to them but I questioned what use is it having warranty until Midnight if you aren't contactable and when contacted a short period after the date your response is it has expired? This is all with a nice attitude but obviously doing my upmost whilst being polite to try and avoid any repairs bills if I go down the route of taking it to Audi.

She spoke to the service manager who explained that I will need to pay Diagnostic fee's and it will be down to Audi Extended Warranty to see whether or not they will contribute or pay for the entire bill whilst considering the circumstances and fault... I spoke with Audi Extended Warranty who then explained that is how it works but they mentioned that if the dealer did want to approve the repair work they could do so.

This was booked in with Audi closer to my original post and as there first available appointment with a courtesy car was 16th December I booked it with the intention of using my RAC Warranty in the meantime and if all problems resolved cancel my appointment. My car is currently with an Independent RAC Approved Garage who called me yesterday to explain he had contacted a previous colleague/friend who currently works as an Audi Technician for some guidance.

Issue 1 - They have ordered a Brake Servo and will be fitting today/tomorrow

Issue 2 - The mechanic explained all 4 callipers are used during Auto Hold and he believes the callipers are sticking on one side but due to their diagnostic limitations he believes it will be a trip to Audi to rectify. (What are people's thoughts on this? They are an experienced garage with a good reputation who actually sell endless BMW's / Audi's / Mercs etc so for them to say it may need to go to Audi it's abit of a worry as for something so small I imagine it would be an inconvenient bill.

Would welcome peoples opinions and how they would proceed? Ultimately my goal is to have it repaired and pay nothing but worse case scenario I accept it's not brand new.

I bought this vehicle 4 months ago with an RAC Inspection and 2 Year Warranty and have taken it to a garage for warranty work which does all pre-sale work for the dealer I bought from to only to be told it may need to go to Audi... I'm tempted to call them and ask there advise as a last resort in my bid of avoiding any repair costs, perhaps they may not want to know but worth a try if they can point me in the right direction to an RAC Approved Garrage who may be able to fix the Auto Hold as they now use someone else since Covid Started due to demand.

The diagnostic fees thing is pretty normal in my experience. They just knock it off the bill when Audi agree to the warranty work. If you have ever raised the issue with an Audi dealer within the warranty period they should accept the warranty claim even after the 3 years is finished. It is worth noting that all VAG cars in the UK are actually sold with 2 years manufacturer's warranty and 1 years warranty paid for by the dealer network. You don't get actually get 3 years manufacturer warranty from any VAG brand in the UK. So you might find you get kicked back to your dealer to argue with Audi for a goodwill contribution. The best you'll get is a contribution on parts from Audi and labour rates from the dealership. I have no idea what the mark-up is on parts or labour but in my experience Audi are pretty happy to supply parts free of charge but you really have to haggle with the dealers to get them to discount the labour rates.

All that said, if you have a 2-year warranty with the people who sold you the car, both these items seem pretty straightforward so I'd just take the car back to them and say - fix it please. And they should really.

Interesting, good to know. The last year of warranty on this vehicle was actually spec'd as an option therefore on this occasion it could be down to Audi Extended Warranty's or whatever they call themselves.

Tempted to do so, well my car is still with the garage therefore I am going to hold off until I hear what they have fixed and what they haven't as he said "He imagines it will be a visit to Audi to rectify" regarding the Auto Hold issue... but here's me being hopeful they manage to crack it. If the Auto Hold issue remains I will contact the dealership to see if they will help in anyway as isn't it upto 6 months of ownership they still have some responsibility regardless?

Meanwhile I will enjoy driving the courtesy car enthusiastically... Kia Soul - 1.6 Diesel Automatic from 2011 :p

Waiting on my car still but I hear changing the Brake Servo on these is a massive pain? They explained at one point they thought they may have to take the engine out to replace the Servo (I read that online too..) but I believe they must have realised it was do-able without. Had to call for an update though even though they have had my car since Monday.

How many hours of work would be expected to carry out this job?

Still waiting for the wife’s new A3 I placed an order for on the 15th August. No movement at all other then a standard holding email once a month. Contemplating just cancelling the thing and looking for something on a forecourt.

Are these massive lead times on all new cars or just the German ones ?

4 months seems to be the standard trotted out
Bare in mind usually once a car starts to get built the process is v quick, i.e. a day or 2 days to build the car from scratch and then a week or so to ship it over (altho BREXIT impending....)

After what felt like “Forever” I got my car back today.

They have replaced the Brake Servo (I expected this as had it diagnosed by a mechanic friend beforehand) and it appears to have solved both issues, the Auto Hold has been flawless and extremely smooth since but obviously early days but it makes sense that it could be related. The old Servo showed clear signs of significant wear/damage which is strange after only 22,000 miles.

I dread to think of the bill as they said it was a pain of a job and took almost 12 hours.

Thankfully the RAC have covered every penny. I literally dropped my keys off and picked them back up.
