Audi owners in here!

Surely both of those will soon be end of life, why put big money into the oldest car in it's segment?

Because like Chris Harris I could picked a low mid 20s car, wack a stage 2 MRC upgrade on it and have a north of 400bhp car.

The Audi S3 Saloon looks absolutely fantastic, the specifications are excellent, it looks great from the outside. Hadn't really realised quite how nice it is. I find it difficult to get interested in Audi these days, everything you see is the the same white, S-Line, Amplified Black Pack Sportback Sport leased 2 litre diesel with 140bhp, but the S3 really seems like something else.

Infact if I had to be picky only the interior lets it down.

Anyone tried one?

It does look good, but unfortunately it has poor steering as usual and the fuel consumption from their 2litre 4 pot is no better than BMW's awesome 3litre 6pot turbo and Merc's 3.5litre 6pot. It begs the question - why get a 2litre 4 pot when you can have (or will be able to have) the better 3litre 6pot from other manufacturers for the same type of money with no fuel penalty?

According to the specs both emissions and economy are better than BMW, there is no Merc 3.5 v6 and its not available in the CLA or C class saloons anyway. If the S3 Saloon is as fun to drive as the Merc A45 AMG is it'll be definitely worth a good look at.

Apologies, was doing everything from memory.

The M135i is quoted at 38mpg combined (a figure which is actually easily achievable from reviews) with 175g/km (£190 VED) from a 320bhp straight 6 twin power turbo.

Erm...yes there is? The Mercedes C350 Sport. 40mpg. 164g/km. £170 VED. 306bhp and weighs 1600kg. So that's 6g/km more than the S3, the same to tax, slightly more BHP and 1mpg less, from a car with 2 extra cylinders and 1.5 extra litres and which weighs 150kg-200kg more. And this is from a last generation model introduced 6 years ago.

As we can see from above - with 3litre straight 6 turbo's and 3.5litre 6 pot engines producing more power, a 2.0l 4 pot turbo doing 41mpg is hardly pushing the boundaries of engineering over much more characterful engines.

You may want to go and have another look at the merc engine as you are wrong about its availability in the CLA and C CLASS saloon range.

Just because it was discontinued 12 months ago, doesn't mean it didn't exist and I'm sure it still exists in other markets. In fact its people thinking things like "Ooo a 2litre 4 cylinder turbo must be more efficient - I'll get one of those instead" that the fantastic feat of engineering that the Mercedes 3.5 V6 was, was discontinued.

The only petrol engines in the current C Class saloon range are the C180, C250 and C63. The C350 can be had in the coupe but not the saloon, but the C class is not the competitor to the A3 saloon it's the CLA and that only has 4 pots, one being the amazingly good A45 AMG.

I didn't say anything about the current range. You were saying it doesnt exist when in fact it does exist and I'm sure still is in the current range in other markets.

That's not even mentioning that my comparisons were obviously between engines and engine techs rather than comparing the dynamics of each of the vehicles that the engine existed in.

The fact remains Merc make a 3.5l V6 with more power and when featured in a heavier vehicle it still achieves the same fuel consumption and nearly the same CO2 figures than an Audi 4 pot 2 litre turbo in a car 200kg lighter.

VAG engines have always been behind the other German manufacturers in efficiency/power but seem to sell cars based of perception rather than reality.

Does it really matter?

 Does any thread on OcUK Motors really matter in the context of the universe? No, but it is a discussion and comparison of engines and cars - generally what Motors is about?

If you really want this 3.5l v6 you talk of get the merc. If you prefer the audi, go for that.

I don't really want either - but i was highlighting the fact that it seems like VAG are more interested on customer perception rather than doing amazing engineering feats like extracting 300hp from a very large engine and still making it have good MPG. In fairness to them - it sells cars which is what they want, but it doesn't make it any less of a shame that they would sell their products through marketing rather than innovation.

The last engine that VAG/Audi created that very much impressed me for its engineering was the 3litre supercharged v6 in the S5

Since when are co2 figures the be all and end all.

Since Euro 5 came in and car manufacturers are going to be fined 90EUR for each car that doesn't comply to them (IIRC). Oh and since a global recession when everyone went mad with efficiency and cost savings. Oh and since global warming means everyone wants to drive Prius's.
